Watches and Hinderers

Second that! I've only had my Omega two years, I consider myself rough on equipment, and it looks great. For the first six months I cringed every time I hit or bumped the crystal on anything, but it has held up perfectly...not a scratch.

Well...from my experience...I have owned quit a few watches of high quality. Omega's, Rolex's, Zenith's, Breitling's, Panerai's, and a few others... Many I have worn every day and exposed to pretty good abuse. I believe if you wear a premium watch and worry to death about scratching it then you disable yourself from enjoying it...perhaps the same could be said of some carry knives...even cars for that matter. I take great care of my stuff but I also enjoy and use them to the fullest. With that said, I have a Panerai and a Breitling that I switch out primarily as every day use. They both have rubber straps...which can easily be changed out or replaced. They both take abuse very well and have never failed me. I took into consideration the strap, finish, bezel, and crystal when I thought about what abuse I would put them through. My Breitling black steel avenger has really been through it and still performs great and looks the same as when I bought it.

When you pull the trigger...post some pics with your Hinderer! Good luck!

Good question N2K.

Unlike some, I wear my Omega and Breitling (before the Omega) everyday no matter what I am doing. Cutting wood, splitting wood, changing the oil in my vehicles - Not a scratch, ding or mark on any of them.
I can try and photograph them at different angles but suffice it to say - No marks at all. Sorta like my Hinderers.

Thanks.

I'm not worried about scuffs and scratches too much...if they come with use, so be it. My bigger concern is too much wear too easily or a failure of any kind. If I cannot bang my watch around a bit without hiccups, I'd rather buy something else.

I'm not intentionally abusive on anything, but once I decide to use something, it gets used. My primary gear does not look as if it's been kept in a climate-controlled safe. My truck's got door dings, my bikes have a touch of road rash, etc. and so on...

I will highly recommend the Omega (or the Breitling) Sapphire crystal and surrounding materials stand up to "Use"
like our XM's.
Years in the pocket (or on the wrist) and look as good as the day they arrived
What I like about my Omega is, in addition to being well made - it tells the time to the second month after month and my experience with Automatics ......that is a welcome performance indeed.

Honestly, the only thing slowing me down on Omegas is somewhat the layout of indices on the face but moreover--likely not a concern--the enamel bezels. IDK--these's just something about "painted" bezels that never really appealed to me.

Mechanical timepieces are more sensitive to shock, usually causing a very short deviation to timekeeping - this is minor however and bearly noticeable useless you are to the second monitoring the timekeeping.

My favourite daily watch is a Panerai 177, being titanium it is more susceptible to scratches and dings yet after 3 years its still looking good.

I have retrained myself however, many watches these days tend to be on the large size making them door frame magnets, I now no longer smack my watch wrist into door frames, avoid contact with the Mrs diamond rings (these will scratch the sapphire crystal) and am mind full of my activity.
I use a cheaper 500m water resistant watch for the very rough stuff.

I am on the slightly OCD side with my more pricey watches, look after them and they will last.

I recommend Sinn, tough mechanical watches.

Doorframe dings aplenty for me as well. I have noticed that a slightly domed sapphire takes harsher shocks than a flat one, but also notice if (on the profile) that a flat sapphire that does not protrude above the case does fine.

Anyone have ideas on this that oppose mine? I had an Oris fail miserably because it's sapphire sits higher than the case.

Most of mine have a convex crystal...and I have wacked em pretty good only to look down and alls fine. I think it depends on the quality of the crystal....

The old-azz Tag in some of my early photos in this thread has a domed crystal, has been through some gnarly stuff and still looks OK, and functions great. It's a Quarts movement and was a pre-"sellout" item from a company that very few had even heard of at the time. A new battery every couple years and I can and do still wear it from time to time.

Now, I seek a robust mechanical timepiece and you guys have already given good suggestions. Rubi recommended Omegas awhile back and after some homework I find them to be very appealing.

The Panerai fall into a "grail category" for me; as they be pricey, yo! :)

You absolutely want go wrong with an Omega...they are excellent!

I agree! Here is a pic of my Speedy Pro and my new XM :)

For Me, ANY piece of EDC gear has to "Qulaify" in a couple of areas"
- Do I need this?
- Is it going to perform, as expected. when I Need it?
- Can I afford it? Can I afford to be without it?
- Can I carry it?
That said, I EDC my Watch, Flashlight, Knife, Gun/Ammo, Cash/ID, Commo(Phone/Nav)

A few pics....to influence towards my bias for Omega.

This is the older model Planet Ocean, runs at about -1 second a week if worn for 8 hours a day.
