Watered-down W&SS

It would be very coolness. Most people at BFC would have one implanted in their wife so they could make sure they were free from surveillance when they buy all this crap they don't need. :D

Let me sum up a few points I see here. Everyone needs a break from routine: Blues stepped back from moderating Traditional, Kevin needs some downtime from W&SS.

Too many people read the Original Post and then post a reply -- right on past the couple of pages of replies already posted, which they don't bother even glancing though. This brings repetition and renewed controversies. We can live with it.

As others have said, Search was not restricted as a bonus for paying members but because it is resource-intensive. Use Google with search terms site:Bladeforums.com or http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=011197018607028182644:qfobr3dlcra

Another way to locate topics is to search by the Wilderness & Survival Prefixes or by tags. Unfortunately, few people use either system. Personally, I think the tag system is much more flexible. It might be worth taking the time to add a tag or two when you post a reply.

Also, there IS a way to Rate Thread at any time, just above the first post on a page, sort of like the old red and green chiclets. These are functions we don't think about but they could be useful if we took the couple of extra seconds to remember them.

Threads drift. As they age, they may drift into bickering. Back off and let them die, they served their purpose for you once, let it go.

Newbies and the eternally repeated questions: WE NEED NEW GUYS, no matter how hard it is to answer "What's the best sleeping bag?" for the hundredth time. You don't have to answer it when you see a few others already have. Just toss in a "Welcome to Bladeforums and the W&SS!"

Off-topic and a Cantina. Ha! The whole subforum is a Cantina! Keep up the good work, mix those topics. Nothing is off-topic here that has to do with equipment or expertise in responding to challenges or enjoying the outdoors.

We could move knife pictures and discussions to General Knife Discussion, we could move threads on new toys to Gadgets & Gear. The reason they stay here is that this is a community of outdoor and survival enthusiasts and good friends.

What can you post that's not trolling or spam or deal-spotting? Ask me or ask in Service & Support. We'll be glad to clear up the confusion. Basically, if you are posting in response to an on-going discussion, you're probably OK.

Just remember the one big rule of any internet discussion:
You can beat on the topic, but don't beat on each other.

The same goes for the discussions themselves. If a thread doesn't work for you, go on to another that does. Let dead horses rest in peace.

Keep it friendly and you'll keep it fun for everyone. If someone is trying to disrupt a discussion, hit Report Post and let a mod think about it. Don't feed the trolls.

My Mentor :D
Great post !

This forum has taught me much and been my outlet for nature while I was stuck on my ass (just for you Don!) hardly able to move in and out of a car- for that I am eternally grateful!

Hey, Koyote's hangup, not mine. :)

As far as the forum itself goes. I do not feel that anything needs changing. We all give our opinions of what is posted (or not). It has been mentioned that there is a lot of "new Blood" here, and with the influx of new posters comes new ideas/experiences that have not been discussed before so I see no problem with asking the same questions repeatedly- new gear and new techniques come from constant testing/trying out/ mixing ideas.

I think the problem with Kevin's frustration is the fact that there is only so much to talk about. "Advanced" is just doing the basics very, very well. I mean, this is known in martial endeavors like shooting and hand to hand combat.

Let's face it, if we are not going to talk about gear, the forum could be closed right now and two dozen people could be chosen to go through this forum in a two year project and what could be filtered out of that would possibly be the best survival book ever written. If you eliminate gear discussion, there is very, very little that has not been discussed in here over the years. The forum could be archived read-only.

So, it is the sense of community and in the case of some people, an extreme lack of humor...or discussion of gear, that brings them back.

When new things are discussed there tends to be a streak of Neo-Luddism going on...I'm name calling now! Neener-Neener-Neener...I mean...this thread. Jesus.

:eek::D;)

I believe if people would just start using the search option on the site you wouldn't have a lot of repetition, it's not that hard, it would cut down on a lot of the same ol same ol......jmho....

I also find it ironic that the most vicious flame wars happen amongst the members with the highest post counts...

Hmmm ...

Registered Users don't have access to Bladeforums search although they can use Google. Still, repetition with variations -- newbie outlook and some different gear -- can make an old topic interesting for some of us. Not everyone read the old threads when they were working, with the give and take that's the best part of a discussion, not the final conclusions.

Let's start our own Bob. I always wanted to be in a clique.

Me, too! I was just never quite sure that I would want to be in any clique that would have me.*

What kind of clique should we start? Do we have to file papers or anything?

*apologies to Groucho Marks.

Hmmm....the "I'm not in any other clique so I started my own" clique? Naw, that's too long a name. Oh wait, I know....see the attachment. I'll check with some other clique members to see about the paperwork and stuff.

BTW, it's Marx. :D

LOL! You're right: it is Marx, and anybody my age should have known that! I stand corrected.

I love the patch. Kinda reminds me of something I used to belong to.:D I spent nine years with, um, whoever that was. The memory's not what it once was.

Celer, Silens, Mortalis

My Dad would have blown beer out his nose at the sight of that 1st patch. :D

I thought there might be one or two who would appreciate it....and the thread was ripe for some levity. :D

Well, levity is never amiss, in my estimation. But that's probably because I'm nuttier than a fruitcake, and like to smile and laugh. Weird, I know.

Man, that patch did make me smile. It's one of the neatest things I've seen for awhile. If it were a real patch, I'd want one for my cover: I'd wear it proudly.

See, we already have the basis of a clique. We have our own patch and everything.

Leave KemSATSurvival out of this! :D

::looks up from from the Crayola-drawn graph of how smart Don actually is vs. how smart he thinks he is, that he is working on ;):D::

Somebody say my name?!

I think Chicago said it best:

"Everybody needs a little time away..."

Kevin has good points, but so do all the other guys who are of the mind that gear discussion is just as important to this forum as skills. I like hearing about the latest man-made replacement that I can get for harder to find stuff.
I also get a kick out of seeing all the reviews by you guys who get a chance to get out more than I do.

COLLEGE IS KILLING ME!!!!! :(

I think we lose sight sometimes of what we're trying to do, but part of exploring is getting lost in the weeds.

I "explore" a lot...

Invariably, the more new folks we get, the more repetitive the questions will become. But it is also important to remember, we were all new at this stuff once. How would you feel if you asked a season'd vet a question that you were genuinely interested in; only to have him roll his eyes, start with a sigh that just wreaked of calling you a "dumbass", then gave you an answered with the tone of "I've answer this same question a million times, you stoopid noob," ?

I fully plan on doing a "Survival for us Cheap Asses" thread when I get time and few materials together. I think guyzengalz will dig that.

Innywayz...that be just my 2 centolas.

Feel free to ignore. I generally do.
