WC Startac (new model?)

I like that inside disc design! That is something CR should look into! I truly believe the current disc models will give them a headache in the long run!

Sad to see such a great no-nonsense design as the Umnumzaan knife getting dumbed down to the lowest IQ-quartile of its customer base. Had made up my mind to get one, but now I'll gladly pass. There will always be a stigma to it.

There really has to be a smarter way to prevent the dim ones from overextending. This inside disc looks promising. That said, any measure will take away from the CRK simplicity.

Like most everyone on here, i LOVE the look, build quality of the Umum. I love the blade shape, i love the Ti handle design etc.. I will get another one...but let's remember that the Umnum came out in 07-08?...3 years ago!? The design has to be tweaked here and there, always will, until it's perfect like the Sebenza.

I think the Umnum/StarTac is perfect like the Sebenza! I think they have just had a number of idiots not letting the knife break in and forcing the lock bars! If you dont own a Chris Reeves knife and you are a true knife fan, you are truly missing out!

Finally got my "discless" Startac! It is beautiful!! Much better than the disc IMO! Sounds like they are staying with the disc concept but im sure they will change its looks! It just looked incomplete. Like they forgot something? Chris Reeve rocks!!

I recently got my non disc Star-Tac as well. It's perfect. The action, the lockup, and the unlocking all feel perfect out of the box. I know that CRK has to do what they must to keep knife prices down. If users are going to bend their locks, they need to protect themselves from the costs of dealing with the problem.

Just noticed that the Wilson Combat site updated it's Startac pictures to reflect the newer model with the lock disk. I got lucky(personal preference) and got one of last models without the disk. It arrives tomorrow! Review w/pix to follow.

If anyone is wanting one without the disk, I might suggest calling Matt at Wilson and requesting it. Not sure what's left in stock, but there can't be many! The Wilson service personnel seem unfimiliar with the newer models, or the differences anyway. Ask them to check the box and/or knife itself and date card just be sure which version you're getting.

Stay sharp!

I noticed that today too...

I ordered one Yesterday (Tuesday the 13th) and I specifically told them that I wanted one without the disc, and to put a note in the order to check it out before they charge my card and ship it.

I called today to confirm but they said it was already shipped, so I am HOPING and PRAYING that they did what I noted and I'll be getting one without the disc.

I also asked them if they had any without the disc in stock, and they told me that they ran out today or yesterday....

But when I called and asked Tuesday one person said they didn't even have ones with the disc so I called back and go another person and they said that most of them had the disc but they had a few left without it. And then I called and got another person and they said that they actually went down there in the the stock room and checked them all and they didn't have the disk....

So who knows what's going on or what I'm going to be getting off the brown truck end of the week or first part of next week...

Personally I think that the idiots that were bending their locks out should all be put in a room and have their arms and legs bent out backwards and see how they like it...they are the reason for the change so they should be punished! lol

On another note I just got a regular umnumzaan today (I was waiting for the s35vn to be implemented but now I wanted to get one before they changed them so now I'll probably end up ordering a replacement s35vn blade) and I do not see how you would have to bend the lock out, the lockbar moves just as easily as my Sebenzas....There is no need for any break in that I can see....

[/End Rant]

That's great! I pretty much went through the same phone ordeal you did, just didn't mention it! Makes you wonder what's going on in the knife department at Wilson. Anyhow, great to hear you got one too. I'll be looking for the brown truck tomorrow! I'm pumped!

Im pretty sure I got one of the last, if not the last discless Startac! At least thats what I was told! Funny both the disc version and discless version were born on the same day! I found that interesting. I hate to tell you guys this that are expecting, but I would be surprised if you get discless versions!! I just got my replacement discless version a few days ago after a few phone calls and emails! You prob have a headache coming sorry to say! Seemed like everyone but one guy even knew what I was talking about. Not sure if ill be dealing with wilson again. Chris Reeve definitely!! Matter of fact i have an Umnum on order now!! The discless def looks much better!

I can tell you one thing....Wilson has another thing coming if there isn't a discless umnumzaan in a brown truck at my doorstep in the brisk Monday evening ..

Wilson needs to take a page from CRK customer service ..

Ps. I will also be buying a ticket to new York to pick up that discless version and i'll even leave you the idiot disc's version...lol

I ordered my Star-Tac on Monday (9/12), it was shipped on Tuesday, and it arrived this morning. I'm drooling over this thing, as it's my first CRK! Anyways, just fyi, it doesn't have the disc. And the born-on date is August 10, 2011.

I guess I am crazy but I don't think it looks all that bad. Could it have been better executed? Perhaps. Is it a show stopper? No way! Still a great knife and a great looking knife at that. I think these things just take some getting used to maybe. Besides, I doubt that Mr. Reeve will leave it alone anyway. He is always coming up with ways of improving his products (like perforated washers). For Chris Reeve knives the Umnumzaan is relatively young. It is sure to have other minor changes in the future. I think that ultimately any measure taken to prevent over travel (and possible damage) of the lock is a functional improvement regardless of whether the over travel it is done accidentally or intentionally. Look at it this way. Nobody though a mole on the face was sexy until Cindy Crawford came along.

I still don't like moles! :D

Just kidding. You have some valid points. I didn't like the Zaan at all when it first appeared, but it grew on me. I like even more than the Sebenza now. HOLY crap, the UPS truck is here!

False alarm, just a school bus. Come on already!

I am not seeing the updated version on Wilson's site... Could be missing something and not sure about posting link I'm using in here...

As many other folks, I contacted Wilson and they informed me both knives were in stock {had thought they were gone several days before}. I was out that afternoon/evening so placed my order early the next morning and sent a follow-up note to request the non-disc version. Later that day, received a reply stating mine was boxed/shipped, and all they had on the shelf were the new models - they did not know which one shipped. Shipment will not make it to me until Monday, and no idea which one will show up.

Overall, it's my fault for sitting on the fence too long. I'll give the disc version a fair shot if that's what I receive, but thinking it may have to go back at the moment. I hope the rest of you get the ones you want in as shipments arrive.

That really bothers me that Wilson pulled the same exact thing down to the t for atleast 4 of is!

I am losing sleep over the whole deal.

I will be demoralized if I get the disc version. I should not have sat on the fence for so long either.....

Hope you get the right one. I just popped open mine. Turns out it was sitting on my back porch for the last hour.

Notice the date card in the cruddy photos, the same Aug 10th date. I'm guessing that's when the old batch matted with the new. Overall I wasn't surprised at the quality at first, then I started taking a closer look at a few things. One, the rear screws(front and clip)seem worn or chewed up a bit. Not like the knife has been used, just like extra care wasn't takin when assembled. Second, and this is a good thing, is the lock-up. I'm use to seeing Zaan's go over about 70%, or the ceramic ball sit about 60%. On mine it sits at about 25%-30%. I tried taking a photo. Very cool.

So I'm overly thrilled to get the Startac, and I'm sure it won't be leaving my belt for quite some time. Good luck to all who grabbed one of these, hope you got the one you wanted.

Stay sharp!

HOODEP. When you go on the Wilson site and to the Startac page; click on the more photos tab underneath the main picture. You will see the newer disk photos there.
