WC Startac (new model?)

Been told by both Chris Reeve and Wilson that all Umnums from this point on will have the disc! Whether it is the Startac version or regular CR version. Gonna post pics of mine soon. Charging cam battery as we speak!

I'll be honest, I have been looking at getting an zaan for a long time now. The one thing I thought it was missing was an over travel stop.
This added stop disk may be an improvement, but it does nothing for the looks of the knife. There are so many ways to prevent over travel. This disc is a big piece of hardware for such a little task. I know its not a LBS, but it just looks like a failed attempt at one. I foresee another revision. I know I am too excited about the zaan and will probably pick one up with the disc, but I may be kicking myself later.

To do like some have said and make it hidden would probably raise the price of the knife considerably. If that's how they have decided to stop the over travel problem and prevent people from bending it themselves I'll accept it and be happy.

Let's end this nonsense and talk about a real knife.

No "Idaho Made" stamp.

No lock bar stop disk.

No fancy handle designs.

Just pure perfection.

Here are some pics of my new StarTac with the new feature! I included some other fine specimens for comparisons. Honestly I think the disc looks better in person, but Im still not satisfied 100% i guess. I dont think I would have ordered it if I knew it had this disc! CR said they will be on all Umnums from now on, but not on the Sebs. I think they will stick with the disc but make it blend with the StarTac design and the reg Umnum somehow?! Anyone thinking about ordering one, Id wait! I think they will improve this! Seems kinda like it left CR not finished. All these beautiful components to the knife then this plain round disc? Im just not so sure on this one?!DSCN1704.jpgDSCN1701.jpgDSCN1702.jpgDSCN1705.jpg

I wouldn't wait. If you were ever on the fence about getting an Umnumzaan I'd find an older version right now.

Here is a worry. If I send my Umnumzaan without a disc to get fixed because of something else are they automatically going to give me a disc anyway?

Id like to grab a pre disc umnum! Let me know if anyones got them in stock?! Thankx!!!!!

Most likely not, unless they need to replace the lock side for some reason.

Yeah Im kinda on the fence as well! Couldnt they have just machined the top of the disc with the startac design so it would match? Just thinkin.............

I would think that this feature would have to be requested by the knife owner if the Umnum was sent in for spa treatment.

I'm still on the fence about this being added.

I will need to see it in person before I decide if it is a desirable feature.

I own or have owned many knives with the lock bar stabilizer (I know CRK is not calling it a stabilizer, but you get the idea). I do think it adds to the look of many knives.

I've always viewed CR knives as bordering on functional works of art - so I do hope that they experiment a little and figure out a way to better integrate this feature so that it adds another artistic element.

The pivot pin is very close to the relief line where the lock bar meets the frame - I would like to see something added there (kind of like on a Yuna) that would restrict the overextension.

Glad I have one without this feature - gonna hold onto it.

Thanks for the pictures.

Just curious, how much have you sharpened the regular Umnumzaan? The blade appears a bit smaller.

I've looked at a few of my "lock bar" knives, and one of my WDZ knives has a hidden one behind the bar. It does the exact same thing, but it is ON the lockbar itself, and not on the face or top of the knife like everyone's used to seeing...works great.

Also, i was waiting to get another Umnum until they made the switch to S35(have to have the latest and greatest kinda guy) AND most importantly, the bigger cut out to access the lock bar release....NOW it looks like i might have to wait for a redesign on the "disc"....maybe it will grow on me:(

To bad CRK didn't do something more like that.

Yeah, i really wish CRK did something like that too...it seems so obvious, especially that all they want to do is stop over extension of the lock bar...wish i had a good enough camera to take a pic of my WDZ to show everyone....maybe someone else knows what i'm talking about and can show a pic

I havent sharpened it because i dont trust myself but it doesnt need it at the moment...the blade on my Umnum is just a tad smaller. Barely noticable...

Airight, here are some pics i tried to take with my crappy camera. If you look closely on the lock bar, you can see a disk with a screw in the middle. This is the disc that stops the lock bar from over traveling, but it's hidden.

Yea. That would seem a whole lot more logical. Just flip the disc to the inside. Only thing that could cause a problem though is the clearence from the blade to the scale when closed is verysmall. But if they can recess the disk like a millimeter into the scale then that should work perfectly. I hope Mr. Reeve would consider this and see if they can do some R&D with this idea.

i agree, a much better. The same disc on the inside on the knife serves the purpose and is not nearly as unsightly. Hopfally someday soon the disc is revised.
