WC Startac (new model?)

Anne Reeve emailed me back today about this and informed me of her posting here. I had emailed CR and let them know that Wilson did not show this new disc in their photos and that i wouldnt have ordered it had I seen it with the disc. Anne I hope you dont mind that I post this but I thought it would be a good addition. Anne said "One additional point that is not addressed in my post is the photograph on the Wilson Combat website. The addition of this disc has only been on their most recent delivery and I presume they have not had the opportunity to change the photograph. I am sure they would accept the return should you decide to do so but hope you will rethink your opinion when you understand our rationale." Guess i ll just have to wait and see if i can live with this disc! It just doesnt look good in the photos here! Whomever suggested the CR logo like on the Mnandi, now thats a good idea! I highly doubt they will leave the disc looking like that! They re gonna have to do something with it!!

It would have been nice to see it made from titanium rather than steel. The clip inserts, thumbstuds and clips are Ti so it seems to be the natural choice. There is obviously nothing wrong with steel but it seems an odd choice of materials when taking the rest of the knife in to consideration.

This is true, but condsidering its and after thought, and quick fix.

That being said I wouldn't put this on there because too many people have to go a be stupid and go tampering with it. Just like most other companies they'd simply refuse to fix it as you'd void the warranty.

Guess the people at CRK are just a lot nicer than I am. Sure you could argue you might lose some customers but from what I've seen Chris Reeve has no trouble finding people to buy his product. This Forum is one example.

Either way, you have a first production run of a new design. If they change it, yours will be very rare - if they don't change it, then you will still own one of the first of this "improvement"
Definitely keep it.

I think people need to go with the flow a bit more - change can take some getting used to, but Chris and Anne know what they are doing, and everything that they do to their knives is done for a reason - I'm sure that every change is scrutinized and well thought out before it goes into production.
Just trust them :)

Where is the freaking UPS guy?!!! I ve never been so anxious waiting to get a knife b4!! Will post pics later and let u guys know the D.O.B. as well!

Waited 3 weeks on my Startac to arrive, normally it takes max 8 days from the US to here, I know the feeling, it drove me mad.

Just got my StarTac!! It does have the new "disc"! And honestly my first thought was that it doesnt look bad or out of place at all in person! And if its gonna serve its purpose as Mrs. Reeve stated then Im gonna keep her! I ll post pics soon but mine seems like its the same color as the knife. Where the OP's looks almost like shiny stainless steel? But maybe that was just his camera? We ll see if I can get some good pics. But I love it!! Wow! Im shocked! Always loved my Sebs but this knife is like freaking sick!! Cant believe I ve lived without one of these for all my years!!! Cheers Chris Reeves!!!!!!

Can't wait to see'em. Also congrats.

Well I think I know what my next CRK will be. I kinda dig the new upgrade and Im sure if Mr. Reeve thought it needed it then its a great improvement to the original design.
Now just gotta start saving my pennies.

I don't think you can consider this feature an upgrade. It is a downgrade imo that this feature is even needed.

Well obviously there are issues with liner locks or else Hinderer and whoever else wouldnt have come out with their stabilizers. Im sure CR didnt dream this up one night. Maybe they will dress it up or something in the future but if Anne Reeve tells me to trust her and go with the new design i ll give her a chance! But I have never owned an Umnum before so I cant make a fair comparison. But so far this thing feels like a Rolls Royce!!

Its the nature of framelocks. Some people who dont know how to properly open their knives or were just in a certain situation that caused them to over extend their lock bar.
Its an upgrade in the sense that it fixes the previous versions flaw. But I can see if your just looking at the aesthetics of the knife you can think its a down grade.

I have no problem with the aesthetics. I see it as a downgrade because of the reason it is needed. Not because the Umnumzaan's are defective but because many of their users are.

Actually, the aesthetics issue could be resolved by putting the CR logo or engraving the wilson combat version with their starburst pattern.

It was right on the tip of my tongue. This Umnumzaan will now forever be called by me the "for stupids Umnumzaan". Not very catchy is it.

not a total deal breaker but I'd really prefer the one with out the disc if I get it.

Striderco can we see some of your pics? You say it dosn't look that bad?

Well, aesthetically, based on the pics I've seen, that disc just doesn't seem to gel with the rest of the knife. Then again, it does serve a function; it just looks so much like an after-thought. I'll have to look for a used one without it; when I decide to pull the trigger on it.

I think "downgrade" is a little harsh. it doesn't make the knife better in performance (so not an upgrade) and doesn't make it worse. More a deterant. If the knife was used appropriatley in engagement and disengagement, I don't believe we'd be here. But as is with the 80/20 rule, 20pct of the users don't know or don't adhere to the uniqueness of opening/closing this CRK model so it affects the 80pct that do. In either case, its a LE CRK, and it will work flawlessly. Now the boneheads can't manually bend the bar past the disc. And if the disk falls out due to tampering, Chris now has the evidence to show the knife was tampered with and can now with confidence deny the warranty repair.

That being said, I hope the old supply of Ti slabs lasts long enough for s35 Umnum steel to come out.

Well, my opinion and $1 will get you a small cup of coffee - but I'm OK with it. I would like to see some design enhancements made to it to make it seem less of an afterthought. Hinderers and Striders have them styled something like the end of a bullet cartridge, and that's pretty cool. In the end, Chris is really helping all of us in his continuing efforts to control cost (warranty work) and keep the pricing stable. These knives are expensive enough as it is without the added burden of supporting the stupid.

Well said DallasSTB but one question...

Where can you get coffee for $1 these days? A quality cup.
