We are bored with S30V

S30V is good and high quality steel for edc knives. I'm more bored by hype on titanium frame lock flippers on ball bearings.

To everybody who isn't a big fan of S30V, I ask you to sharpen and hone with diamond stones and compounds then use S30V again. I never thought I would see S30V hold a razor edge, but with diamond pastes after diamond stones it happened.

As for the fatigue in everything being S30V, I get it. There's a million different flavors out there, chocolate isn't a bad flavor, but I don't want everything chocolate flavored. What I would like more to see die out is knives that are bad at cutting than S30V, though. 3mm stock is starting to feel thin anymore.

I like most steels used today. I still have knives in 440C that work great. I bought my first knife in S30V on 2004. Still going strong!

As a newbie, I am finding hard to keep up with you guys. My first good knife has S30v and now it’s passé. Lol. BM Crooked River.

Only passe' if you find it so. If you find that it works for you, then none of our opinions should matter.

I'm a guy who loves me some 154CM, VG-10, 1095, and even some lowly ol' AUS-8.

I don't consider them passe' at all. I find the low cost and ease of maintenance "super" characteristics of those steels.

And that BM Crooked River is awesome. Don't look down on it because some anonymous internet folk find it "old-hat".

I was only half serious. I still like my Crooked River.

Spyderco is devaluing S30V by giving us better steel at similar price. Why spend $175 on a regular Spyderco Military when you can get an exclusive for the same . So my issue is not with S30V I still use it my issue is that companies price them to High reason why I'll never get a Shaman or another Benchmade 940 well maybe Ill get the G10 again lol .

YES! THIS!!! enough ball bearings already and enough of all this hype-humping!

Based on my perspective (and relative level of ignorance), they're just an excuse to finish the knife to lower tolerances than would be needed to get a similarly smooth and satisfying action on washers and ultimately leave the knife more vulnerable to potential problems in use.

Every Shiro on washers I've flipped has been just as good and smooth as the bearings, if not even more satisfying.

While a topic as such can both be a privilege and a curse to participate in, if you tune out the noise from those who have an agenda and an axe to grind (if you participate long enough, you will find that there are such patterns!) against certain steels, you will learn a lot from those experts and peers who have accumulated years of experience with both using and then sharpening certain steels.

This Site is for "knife aficionados" and those who develop an acquired taste for the whole art of knife making and knife using, ranging from daily hard use in real world applications to something much more benign like just fidgeting and/or admiration driven collecting. A casual bystander certainly will not spend day in / day out, 24/7 on these forums which I personally find to be fantastic for my own penchant when it comes to this "hobby".

S30V is a good steel like it a lot all things considered it is kinda boring to see it in the specs but I'd still buy if the design is nice.

Speaking of ZT wish they had stuck with Elmax instead of switching to s35vn. Elmax is exciting to see but their new models are 20cv which is very exciting

Bored of a steel that sharpens easily, takes a great edge, holds a decent edge and has pretty decent corrosion resistance? I guess I’m ok with being bored.

S30V does many things right, but ease of sharpening is not one of them. Even compared to some steels with higher edge retention, S30V has given me the most trouble of all super steels, aside from the steels that are in the S__V family (but not S35VN, that's super easy to sharpen). Elmax and M390 have pretty significant improvements to edge retention, but are also easier to sharpen (in my experience).

Can't believe this thread is still alive. Some thoughts:
  • General consensus is that S35VN is as good or better than S30V. Some people say there's no difference, but I haven't heard anyone ever say they prefer S30V over S35VN
  • Current prices have S35VN cost <10% more than S30V - for example, when looking at stock of similar size on Alpha Knife Supply.
  • I would assume Crucible produces much more S30V than S35VN, because of how much it supplies to Spyderco, Benchmade, etc. That difference in quantity could explain the 10% price difference
Given that, I'm actually somewhat surprised Crucible still produces both alloys, and hasn't canceled S30V production in favor of focusing on S35VN. Is there anyone out there actually asking for S30V over S35VN, for any reason other than the minimal cost difference? Is it easier to heat treat or something?
