Thanks for the heads up and for shedding some light on the dangers of using some of these materials, Mark. I appreciate you taking the time:thumbup:

And while we are talking about not stretching the limits what about tortoise shell? It's supposed to have a complete ban as well. That's another fairy tail that if it is recycled from an old item it's okay. Just do the right thing when you know it and avoid any doubtful items. Frank

Mark thanks for taking the time to post this thred, I know how busy you are getting ready for Blade. I have been in this business for 30 years and I have a policy of treating every phone call from a seller of illegal ivory as if it was part of a sting operation. The laws are not hard to follow. There are goups that are pressuring the Feds into putting the walrus onto the endagerd species status because of " Global Warming". It is up for review in 2017. If they are succesful the trade in ancient ivory will be banned. They may have a problem because our winters are getting colder.

Hello!

Some info for those living within / selling to / buying from the EU. One starting point when you are trying to find out about restrictions on certain species google EG 1158/2012 (and EG 757/2012).
It is possible to search the downloadable pdf by specimen name etc for a quick check.

National limitations are typically based upon - but not necissarily limited to !!!!! - those listings.

From a personal point of view, buying from Austria, making absolutely sure not to violate any restriction is extremly important, since everything is usually controlled to detail and might in a best case scenario result in confiscation of bought knives. Not talking about subsequent fines and possible prison sentences...

Regards,
Alex

I hate to learn that some members have been jailed. That is disturbing.

A question for Mark. While I join those that applaud you for your public service announcement here, I'm concerned that it is eroding your potential customer base. I know I, for one, view this as reinforcing your integrity, giving me greater confidence in my ability to do business with you legally. I hope others feel the same, because it would indeed be a shame if your business suffered. We have few enough sources for the legal goods as it is.

I can be as simple as whitetail antlers in some states..I personally saw a man at a show get a $500 fine here in Kentucky for not having a tag to identify a European mount whitetail skull he was selling..

Thanks Tryppyr, and everyone for your support. It's a two edges sword (so to speak), some will shy away from these materials altogether but I hope most will get my message. I am going to let this thread die now, stay safe, stay out of trouble and most of all, have fun, and maybe a little bit of money, making knives.
