We were all new here once

New guy from the state of North Carolina. living riight in the middle of the Smoky Mountains. Started collecting knives in the latter part of last year. After a couple of bouts with Cancer, it’s been really great to do something that’s really enjoyable. I’m looking forward to learn from the experts here on the forum, since I know little about this awesome hobby. I will not get my feelings hurt if I make a mistake and someone calls me out.

New to this forum and even though I have tougher skin from other forums, I dreaded making a account.

Wanting to learn in this community and contribute what little I can made me ultimately join.

One of the first general posts I see is this one! Thanks for your consideration of us new guys and I'll try to pass it on, as helpful and courteous as possible 🙂

South Texas here, with more love for knives than guns 🤠

Welcome to Bladeforums.

There was a time several years ago when I dreaded coming here, and rarely did. But things have changed dramatically since then. Today this forum is a great place, with lots of very helpful and friendly members who are eager to help and answer questions from anyone, including brand-new members.

One of the benefits of this forum is that it is well-moderated. The moderators don't tolerate trolling or people violating the rules.

Now there might be a few snarky members, and a few who have strong opinions, but they aren't mean spirited and don't intend any harm. However, if a new member starts breaking the rules, or acts like a fool, or is being clearly dishonest, then they will not be well-received by anyone here.

Beyond that, fear not, there are lots of good people here, and none I would consider "bad". So just dive in and enjoy. :)

Welcome to Bladeforums D DougZ
And good on you for becoming a Gold Member 👍

I was around about 20+ years ago but life and other hobbies took me away.
Retired a year ago from 40+ years in the hardwood flooring business.
Rejoined because I've just been drawn back in looking at knives again which I have no doubt will be costly.

Welcome. What types of knives are you into?

I miss TX for the people, food, deer, turkeys and hogs….. but I don’t miss the heat or bugs!

There are some great folks on here. There are areas for all sorts of knives, and some great knowledge that is shared.

G'day, Aussie here and a beginner knife maker. I love hunting, fishing and anything to do with the outdoors. Here to learn more from the wealth of experience on this forum

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes new members don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach new members a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.

UPDATE: It's been over 8 years since I started this thread, and I thought it was time for an update.

When I started this thread back in 2012, new members were sometimes treated a bit rough. But things have changed since then. These days most active members are eager to help new members. So I don't want you to get the impression that you're entering a lions den where the members are just waiting to bite your head off. I think you'll find the vast majority of members to be friendly and helpful. So welcome, and enjoy :).
I am new here. :)

Forgot to introduce myself. I’m Warren and I live in Cambodia. Born and raised in California, I decided to retire here in 2023.

My collection of folding knives was 217 blades strong. And a few fixed blades. I sold most of them because of the move. I brought only 20 with me. I am slowly building up my collection again, but I will max out at 40. White Mountain Knives ships to Cambodia, but if I buy knives from another company I have them shipped to my friend’s place in California, and he ships them to me. Just like the Feldspar I bought from a member here recently.

Thank you, it’s been great on BF. So many sweet blades, and very cool designers and custom makers.

I'm new here and haven't made many posts, but I hope to stick around to make quite a few, hopefully without pissing anyone off too badly. :p

I'm a knife maker (who will not do any business here until I purchase the proper membership) who has been at it for 3 or 4 years, and lately I've had a slight change in my mentality on knife making, and I hope to improve my skills! My biggest influences are Seedy Knives, who I consider to be my mentor, and Bob Loveless! I started by grinding on files purchased from the local flea market for $1, bought a Harbor Freight 1x30 belt sander with money from a scratch-off ticket, built a charcoal forge out of literal junk, clay from the ground and a $8 air mattress pump, forged blades from files and springs, then tried stock removal knife making out of curiosity and never looked back.

Now I make them mostly from stainless steel and have them heat treated, and I hope to grow even more in the future!

Ironically, I don't have that many knives in my possession, maybe less than 20,

Hi all - I am VERY new to EDC knives and am hoping those more familiar can lend some advise.

I have been getting by the last couple of months with using some basic options from SOG (Ultra XR, Stout FLK)...
I want to up my game and try some more premium brands like SpyderCo and Demko as their release/locking system seem great (in addition to the quality). However, size/weight is the biggest concern for me...
1. I like to have a shorter/heavier knife for 5th-pocket jeans carry.
2. And then a lightweight option for lighter-weight pants/shorts...

I have spent like 100+ hours watching Youtube videos this last week, which have been valuable but I ultimately I am leaning towards the following:

For the shorter option - I was thinking of going Demko Nano Shark over the Shark Cub as its shorter and measurements appear to be better for that 5th pocket for me. I love the sheepsfoot blade shape and the price doesn't bother me. I really want to try out the shark lock and I also make my way to Chicago often which has stricter blade length laws, so this model is ideal for that crazy city!

And I was thinking of the Para 3 Lightweight for the lower-weight option. I think I would like their compression lock and the Para 3 LW seems to be the lightest option they have in compression lock. The quality of LW handle materials concern me a little, but the G10 and other handles seem that they add more weight.
PS -I know that is over 2.5in but when I go to Chicago, I would just take the Nano Shark as I am usually wearing pants anyway when I go into the city.

Thoughts on these? I know the more premium versions of the Para 3 or Para 2 seem to be preferred among the Youtube videos I watched.
And the Shark Cub seems to be more preferred for the Demko option as many thought the Nano Shark was over-priced...

Its just that those "preferred" models just don't seem to fall into exactly my specific desires. The Nano Shark and Para 3 LW seem to be close and suit my needs a little more.

But I am OCD (clinical!) and over-think stuff like this a lot!

TIA.
