We were all new here once

we can teach newbies a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

As a newbie... Thank you. I'm going to ask 100 stupid questions. I'm going to make mistakes and mess up. But in my day job, I know that I can help someone a lot more with a little more carrot and less stick.

im still trying to get my head around this site as well as trying to learn more about knives and more, on a side note can any one help me with my whetstone if they know much about them much appreciated .

Greetings everyone,

I just discovered this forum when searching for some info about a new blade I just picked up, it's a Microtech DOC. I read some, read some more and figured it would good join.
My background is (or was) as a machinist but that work pretty much died here on the East Coast so since 2k, I've been doing computer repair, build and IT management.

Looking forward to joining some of the discussions here. Now, which sharpening system is the best....?

Welcome one and all :).

To answer your question about sharpening Ed B, I'll direct you to the "Maintenance, Tinkering, & Embellishment" sub-forum here at Bladeforums, that's the place where people talk about sharpening (as well as some other things). You'll find no shortage of answers and opinions on what the best sharpening equipment is in that sub-forum.

To find that sub-forum, click on the white "Forum" button at the top of the screen in the upper left hand corner under the Bladeforums logo, that will take you to the forum directory where you can see and find all of the various sub-forums here at Bladeforums. You'll find the "Maintenance..." sub-forum in the top box. Just click on the name and you'll be there.

You're welcome. And thank you (and everyone else) for posting.

"a little more carrot and less stick" sounds like a good policy. :)

Welcome Fixitfelix.:)

If you read my post to Ed B a little ways back (post #680, post numbers can be found at the right in the blue strip above a post) you can find the sub-forum here at Bladeforums for all things related to sharpening.

Thanks for the info, Kilgar. Since around '98 I have been using the Spyderco creamic sticks as well as a piece of quartz glass from a high pressure sodium light (it very lightly abrasive and I use it last) with good results.
I'd like to take sharpening up a few notches so have been looking at the Lansky, Edge Pro 4, DMT and others. Then there's diamond/stone, creamic, etc. Lots of choices for sure!

Well, I guess since I joined the forum a little while ago, I might as well introduce myself. I've carried a knife nearly every day of my life for the last 30+ years. Fixed blades, folders, multi tools, axes, and nearly anything else with an edge intrigues me. I enjoy learning about the craft from some of the gifted folks that frequent the forum. I try to take the knowledge I get here and apply it where I'm able to do so.

This forum is a nice learning tool. When I first got into folding knives, I thought assisted opening knives were genius and didn't see a point in not getting a knife with one. Now my tastes has completely changed, I hate assisted openers. A good knife can open just as fast but you won't have to defeat the spring to close it later.

Hello everyone, thanks for allowing me to join the forum. I've owned and used knives for decades but I can't say I have any where near the skill and knowledge my father had. I recently helped my son refurbish a Gerber that had a rounded tip and it served to spark my interest in knives again. If anything, I feel qualified in lecturing on handling knives safely. When my son was a boy I gave him his first knife and I cut my finger while admonishing him to be careful. Years later he gave his son a knife and I cut myself with that blade too! Blood really drives the lesson home, lol! :D

Hello, everyone!

I'm super interested in knives and look forward to perusing the forums and learn from your fine selves.

Yes hello everyone ive been here a few months now. Its really been cool to find all the knowledge that is available about knives on here as well as the kindness ive witness first hand more then once already. I believe this is a real gem of a place to be for anyone interested in knives. Thank u all im really looking forward to learning more about all knives but especially Traditionals:)

What's up everyone another new guy checking in. I've always owned and carried knives. Started out with Kershaws and CRKT's and then graduated to ZT's and Benchmades awhile back. Unfortunately thanks to this forum and YouTube I discovered midtech and custom knives and it all went downhill from there. In all seriousness I've learned a ton reading through the forum and am glad I found this place. Thanks for all the great info.
Chris

Hello all, another new guy. I decided to join this forum after checking it out, the people here seem friendly and knowledgeable. I recently got into collecting knives from a friend who started me on folders. The first 2 knives I bought were Spyderco Endura 4's, the Super Blue and Burnt Orange sprint runs, and I recently bought a Benchmade 940 Osbourne for my EDC. Now I have 6 more knives in the mail and tonight I ordered a Busse Ergo Public Defender LE. So needless to say I think I might be hooked on buying knifes at this point. Looking forward to meeting everyone and learning even more.
