Went to church yesterday

Charlie, most people go the other way, from bad to good. I include my sorry self in this bunch. Nevertheless, congratulations on finding Jesus. I want to share something with you. This man accepted Jesus at 62. He is a professor at Columbia State Community College in TN. I'm sure you could call him out of the clear blue and talk to him, if it would help. I would have never, never, ever guessed that he would do this in a million years. I had him as a student years ago. He did have a "colorful" past.

Enjoy and maybe this will help you. It did me.

PS, the man comes into the sermon a few minutes in. Also, do you realize the reputation you have on this forum? Do you realize what will happen if people understand you have changed? Unbelievably powerful.

PS, these sermons are great. All of them.

Be prepared to be hated by many in the world. If you ever hear the quote "Religion caused more death than anything else" do not believe it. Adolf Hitler and Mau were responsible for 30,000,000 deaths, and they were Godless, IMO

How does Jesus feel about smoking pot?

I would guess He is indifferent about it since CM is taking it for pain and he has a prescription.

Romans 14:20
Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.

While this verse is referring to eating "unclean" food, it certainly applies to other areas that some view as "sinful." So, smoke all you want, just don't go around advertising it. There are many different levels, strengths if you will, of faith and some might not be able to reconcile marijuana with their own personal beliefs. This does not mean that either one of you are wrong necessarily, it means that you should probably hide it and not mention it if you have the pastor over for dinner :D

And congrats and God bless, CM. Christianity is a long and hard road at times. You will be tempted and you will fail. I am going to school to be a youth pastor and I fail all the time. It happens. Just keep this in mind:
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8,9.

Congrats Charlie Mike, I truly hope this adds to your happiness and well being. As an Atheist, I don't think this is the best choice for all people, but I certainly hope it provides you with what you're looking for.

Congratulation, CM.

Romans 5-8 is good stuff. But all because of the last verse of Romans 4. That's what makes it all possible.

I'll be praying for you as will others.

I know you've been upfront about your past problems and I will add that going to church and accepting Christ might help make AA or staying away from the booze (and possibly other things) easier to deal with. The AA book and mottos often mention a "higher power" (which can be described however you want of course) and learning about Christ and the teachings might make the everyday fight against booze or drugs a little easier. I mention that cuz I know you have "one day at a time" tat on your arm.

I've been sober for almost two years (this Thanksgiving will be 2 years) and still go to AA once or twice a week. I've done the 12 steps and going back to church has certainly helped me in the day to day fight. IMHO, I think it helps to name the "higher power" as Christ.

Best of luck on your new journey and take it one day at a time.

ps. Consider taking advantage of a trip to the confessional. You'd be surprised how much better ya feel after talking about past problems.

Thanks for the verses and kind words. I had a burning urge to go to services hit me Sat night, and the urge was still there Sun morning. The sermon was on Acts 3&4 (the beggar in front of the temple that was healed). I was planning on partying that night but things turned out much better. Prayed instead.

Congrats Charlie Mike. Jesus doesn't care what you look like or how many mistakes you've made or will make. It's a life long journey to transform yourself closer to how God would have you live. Don't sweat the setbacks and read your Bible to fully understand the faith. It is easy to be lead astray or be confused by false teachers that's why prayer, reading God's word, and fellowship with other believers are all so important.

Cool to hear!

Don't let folks guilt you into feeling bad about all the things you do/have done. You've been forgiven, and renewed. Your body and mind may take a while to realize this.

God will meet you where you are, no matter where that is. As things start to change, so to will your needs and wants.

Just make sure to start spending time discovering the written word. There's lots of wisdom in them there books!

Daniel

Hope it works out well for you.:)
However I may feel about religion(agnostic, but hope there's something there), it has helped out many people, as long as they were sincere about it.
Go for it!

Sometimes I stuggle with being a bit agnostic.

In 2008, my mom and dad, who are devout Christians, took their retirement trip of a lifetime and went to Australia. My mother had been offended by a topless advertisement in Better Homes and Garden, as were a lot of Christians. She is a real people person, and was making small talk with someone she met in Australia, a tourist, also from America. She started pressing and asked "Who are you, where do you live, what do you do for a living?" The lady responded I'm an editor for Better Homes and Garden. My mom said immediatly, "good, I can talk to you personally, as I was going to write you a letter when I got back to the states". The lady said, we had a lot of complaints about this ad, but my boss said nobody would notice it.

To me, what are the chances she would meet the lady she was about to meet. There are 6 or so other billion other humans on this planet, and she was going to try to have a moral influence on many by writing one person specifically, when she got back, and it was this editor, she found herself touring with a half a world apart from the States. She got to personally complain to her, and knowing my mother, she made an impression that the editors boss would even find out about.

Some say coincedence but I think this was a miracle. Chrisitians see many miracles.

Good luck brother.

I've seen many miracles that were chocked up to stat/probability. I have a good mentor. He's a well known knifemaker in FL. My mother in law sings in the church choir. She's happy that I'll be dragging her daughter to church :D

There is a story told of a young girl who became a novice; a novice is a woman who has entered a convent but not yet become a nun. The convent in question was a cloistered convent meaning that very few outsiders were ever allowed in. One day, this novice was praying alone in the chapel when she looked up and saw a strange man there with her. She jumped up and ran to the Mother Superior and told her. A search was made, but no intruder was found. This happened twice more on subsequent days. Each time, no intruding man was found. On the next day, it happened again, but the young novice approached the man and asked, "Who are you?"

"I am Jesus. You've been praying for my guidance and so here I am. Let's talk."

The young girl was so frightened that she jumped up and ran to tell the Mother Superior. Being a spriitual person, the Mother Superior didn't dismiss the possibility that it really was Jesus appearing to this girl. She instructed the novice to follow the biblical instruction to test this spirit. "If he appears to you again, my child, ask him this: What was the Mother Superior's greatest sin before she became a nun?" Only God Himself, beside herself, would know, she figured.

The next day, Jesus appeared to the novice again and she posed the question the Mother Superior had given her. She then ran to the Mother Superior to report. "Jesus has appeared to me again!"

"Did you ask the question I gave you?" The Mother Superior inquired.

"Yes, I did."

"And did he answer?" the Mother Superior inquired with increasing trepidation.

"Yes, he did."

And so with a great fear of what might be revealed, the Mother Superior was compelled to ask, "And what was that answer?"

"Jesus," the young novice replied to the terrified Mother Superior, "said, 'I have forgotten.'"

That's funny and really cool.

My main barrier was my human way of thinking. I have a problem trying to understand the love He has for all of us. I can now accept it without understanding.

My congratulations on finding Jesus. I hope that you have a continuing and life long relationship.
