West coast Beckerhead gathering in the PNW!

I picked up a somethings for 'prizes' the other day. I got 3 somethings, I'm keeping one because they are pretty nice. Now to think of what kinda contest I want to have for it. I have a couple in mind........:D

I'd really like to see Ethan chime in with any thoughs he might have on this get together.

So I'm thinking that if we can get a botany lesson out of mingo, a map and compass lesson out of logan, a trap making lesson out of somebody or maybe a contest combined with some one teaching that would be totally awesome. As far as contests go, easier ones to do would definitely be fire making of some sort, whether it be a speed test on getting one going or something else. One time in Girl Scouts we had a firemaking contest where we had to burn a string that was strung about 18inches above our fire, it was pretty fun. Chopping contest would be fun, I'd like to learn some technique if anyone knows any. I'll keep thinking, I think some of our previous posts had some good contest ideas, however I am not sure about shelter making, that is really time consuming for the short period of time we are going to get to be together. Once it gets closer to time we should talk food! I think a potluck would be kinda fun for friday, not sure about the rest of the days, I love camp cooking though. Anyone have a dutch oven?

Well here is what we've come up with so far.

1) shelter making (very time consuming)
2) Cordage making
3) pot hook const. - ways of suspending pots over fire
4) Fire - Friction fire is what I was thinking
5) fire building contest
6) figure 4 and other trap making
7) improvised hobo stove construction
8) chopping contest
9) hawk/hatchet throwing (knife if you're feeling frisky)
10) Coolest person (J/K lol)

Some of those I can see as a possible contest and a few probably not. Let keep the list growing as far as contests go and then, I think, we can vote on which ones we would like to see or do. That and we don't know how many prizes we will be getting from our awesome Moose.

Please let me know in this thread what you guys want to do for contests so that we can make an official thing out of it.

Capt. brought up a good idea too. Does anyone have a dutch oven?

We outta get a demo on a friction fire from someone, who has made a bow drill fire?

So I see this as some contests for prizes
1) Fire making
2) Chopping
3)
4)

AND

Clinics on how to do a certain skill
1) making cordage
2) Trap and snare construction
3) Edible foods
4) map and compass
5)
6)

Just brainstorming here, I mainly just want to relax, eat and drink beer. Also big on the list would be knives, I bring a bunch and folks can use them a bit. I'll bring a couple for showing and a bunch folks can use.
I'd encourage people to bring what they've got too.

What about hatchet/hawk/knife throwing? I think that could be a fun one.
I was also thinking about actually doing the cordage making contest too.
Then the coolest person contest; well we'll see who shows up. :D

I need to get off my butt and make some cordage and do a friction fire, I've also never thrown a hawk.

I was thinking I could show folks how to find pitchwood. Don't know if there'd be any interest in that.

As far as food goes, and this is important, pot luck sounds good. I can roast sausages over the fire and I make a mean smore, There's a reason the Fal'ers call me "smore whore".

friction fire is kewl, but I think the edible food and plant identification would be awesome.. I so totally lack in this area.. and I feel its extremely important to survival.. If you had someone go that was fully knowledgeable it would be like a 'tour' into the woods...:D

count me in... you guys are only 1800 miles away!!! :p

Sweet!!! That means that BCK just took away any excuses for people that live here on the west cost from saying that it's too far for me to get there.

Get the contest sorted out, and I'll get some BKT's together for ya'll to use for contest prizes.

I'll go and prod Ethan some and see if I can get him to chime in on this one.

I used to be ok at throwing hawks, but I was like.... 12 or 13. I have pretty much forgotten everything :(

I'm sure there's form and function, but I just throw em till they stick :D.... now chinese throwing stars is another thing I used to carry a set everywhere with a balisong in stride when I was 12.. good times running from the cops..... :D

eta: Crazy, I hope you know I was just kidding about coming (wished I could).. but there's no excuse if someone lives within 100miles that can't come for at least one of the days........... otherwise maybe they'll just have to send me ALL their gear for proper disposal, of course I'll pick up shipping costs... :D

On friday sept. 16th i'll see if I can catch us some rainbows out of the stream for dinner. I'd like to get up there this weekend to take some pictures and get some GPS coordinates.

double rainbow in the sky

I have some stuff planned around that time of year but if I can clear it out, I would love to attend.
