Whacha Been Up To......

Looks nice, Bill!

I've been working on a Skull & Flames sheath for my son. The skull is only 2 3/8" tall by 1 3/8" wide. It is so hard to do with my regular leather stamps and stuff. I rounded the end of a .5mm steel bar stock to use as a marker, and a ball point pen that is out of ink. I've searched around and can't find any leatherworking micro-stamps.
Maybe from now on I need to make the pictures as large as I can fit onto the sheath. That would make it a little easier. My Pro Swivel Knife is the large one. So last night I ordered a small Pro Swivel Knife and the small detail blade. I also got some Angus Bone, Dark Bone, and some other similar shades of paint. I was wondering how to mix my colors to make the bone color of the skull look lifelike. These colors should help a lot.
I also got some Taklon detail paintbrushes.
The teeth are the most difficult. I held off on them for now hoping that I could find some tiny shaders. I guess I may have to design some tools and see about getting a machine shop to make them for me.

I have to say you do amazing work with your sheaths 👍👍 I’ve never tried any paint work with leather. But wow you do beautiful job with yours !!!!

As for tools I still need a swivel knife and a lot of backgrounders and spoons , etc ……. Lol. As for custom tools, I just try and find what could work. Old tools , hardware, anything. A lot doesn’t work out as I thought it might lol, but was worth a try.

I'm intriqued by your Navy emblem here. Is it a patch sewn on, tooled and painted or painted? However it was accomplished its very nice!

It's a patch that I glued onto the leather after I skived the leather down a little so the patch would not stick up too much. I wanted to sew it on also, but I figured that it would look like crap.
It is a self-gluing patch that you heat with an iron. So, after the leather contact cement was tacky, I set the patch in place and pressed it down good, then I covered it with wax paper and heated it good with my clothes iron. It seems to be glued on very well even after the wet forming. If it doesn't hold up well over time, then I'll have to figure something else out. I might be forced to try and sew it on in the future whenever I do something like that.

Thanks, Bill. I'm still learning myself. The biggest problem is how small it is. You can't put a big picture on a sheath, well most sheaths. I try not to throw anything away that may be useful someday. I remembered the Zebra pen that I saved after the ink ran out. It works ok, but it would be better to have some tiny shaders and tools. The teeth are the hardest part so far. Hopefully I won't have to scrap this one.

My boy finished a project from one of the Makers Leather Supply templates we picked up at the Sheridan show. He did a great job and I thought I'd gloat on him here. He's carried this thing with him every day and can't wait until the field notes book arrives for the side pocket. Says he's gonna write all his leather projects down in it.

He's started a second one for a knife friend of ours pease pease The kid's got a big heart and loves the idea of making them for other people. Couldn't be prouder of him.

Nice work, young man! I think he's a natural.

Very cool. Interested in long term durability. I like it.

I'm thinking about scrapping the sheath and starting over. I tried to carefully carve the teeth with my large Pro swivel knife. I should've waited until I received my small Pro swivel knife and the detail blade.
I made some tiny shader tools out of pieces of Bamboo sticks. The Bamboo sticks are the sticks that are on the electronics q-tips that I use. I'm glad that I cut the cotton ends off and saved the sticks instead of throwing them away after they were used.
The pear-shaped tool is 1mm on one end and 2mm on the other. FYI, the large front tooth on the skull is only a tad over 1mm wide and 3mm long. I'm going to shade around the teeth the best that I can and then determine whether or not to scrap it and start over, or not.

Finished sheaths for two of my smaller axes. My edges are slowly getting better. I’ve been having fun learning new things over the last month or so. It’s really humbling when you see the work some of you produce and then try to do something similar. I’m almost 60 and I’ll bet there’s more to learn than I’ll have time to
