Whacha Been Up To......

Got this nifty small fixed blade in, it came with a kydex sheath that has really good retention, but as usual it has a belt clip, so vertical it puts the handle up into your ribs, horizontal was ok but I would like more retention when carrying things that way.

So, the fix? made a small adapter belt loop, using some hardware I bought for just such an occasion. The bottom area that is screwed to the kydex is also glued together so it's a solid piece of leather there. The upper section I trimmed to suit the angles the sheath had, so one side has the curve a little lower than the other. And you can see that now the top of the handle is at a more reasonable height and carries a lot nicer this way.

Here's some photos of the belt loop and knife

Blade is about 3 3/4" long with an overall length almost 8"

Even a little thing like that does take time when you're retro fitting something ;) but this worked out pretty nice if I do say so myself. :)

Very nice, Gary. I do the kydex/leather hybrid a lot myself. :)

Very nice work as always G2!

Hadn't posted here in this thread for a while as we'd been super busy for a while. Big doings in these parts. We had Nichole's 50th birthday party. We were able to pull off four epic surprises for her.

1) Our son Josh that is in the Army and stationed in Florida was able to snag some leave and come home for several days without her knowing it. Nichole came home from the store carrying in stuff and there was Josh leaning against the kitchen counter! Blew her away.

2) Dave Stamey is far and away her favorite singer. Here's a couple of favorites:

She's pretty much got the whole catalog, no concerts close by. How about a private concert? All the stars lined up and the creeks didn't rise and we got er done. He surprised her by knocking on the front door. Hope ya can see this vid its cool:

Again blown away.

3) So our daughter and her best friend took Nichole back into the room to get her all dolled up for the concert. Nichole thought we were having just a couple friends over for burgers for her birthday. She walks out the back door and their is bout 50 folks sitting in lawn chairs. Completely taken a back again.

4) Thirteen years ago come Aug 1st was my 50th. She had our good friend and bit and spurmaker Mike, from Taps Bit and Spur Shop make me a bridle bit. What was cool is she had him inlay 50 in silver on the inside of both cheekpieces. I could do no less. When she sat down in her chair for the concert there was a plain wrapped small box on the table next to her. Looked like this:

Our ranching partner Steve , a retired Naval officer said planning D Day was easier than pulling off our four surprises. Thats him in the back in the white shirt and suspenders:

Dave was suppose to play two 45 minute sets but he must of been having fun cause he played an extra 35-40 minutes. He also hung out afterwards and had tacos with us.

Our daughter Alyssa was really instrumental in getting the concert and party put together. I just kinda said OK. Here she is with Nichole, Josh and Nichole's mom Barb:

Excellent party, Dave. She must have been smiles all day long. I’m sure she appreciated the thought and love you put into the day.

Thank you for sharing. Just fantastic.

Thanks guys! Ya bet. It was a blast.

I was out of the shop for about a week due to all of the above and Josh being home. So got busy.

First thing on the list was doing these heavy duty AZ Bell step in chaps out of boarhide. They have roughout accents:

Water buffalo lacing, belt and pocket strap:

Kinda at the opposite end of the spectrum and up next were these Charmitas leggings. Much lighter in weight and way more flexible:

Thats my "50" bit by the way hanging next to them:

It's the bit I use exclusively on the horse i'm riding right now.

Then this loop holster. Carlos border stamp with a regular camo border on the inside:

And a couple of sheaths for outside knives. Nichole did the flower carving on this:

Beautiful work! I just ordered a side of standard 10-12oz Russet skirting from Wickett & Craig. I can't wait to check it out. Next month I'll look for some horsehide to make myself a new shoulder harness for my Glock 21.

Super nice stuff! That holster has got some catching up to do to get as worn in as that old Bisley!

Thanks! Yeah ya'll love that leather. I normally use 8/10 oz for the vast majority of projects I use that leather for. However I often think I should keep the 10/12 oz around too for rifle scabbards and those Loop Holsters. I'm actually thinking of lining those Loop Holsters too.

Thanks! Yes sir it does. I do have an original Heiser for the Bisley too! .38WCF btw

This one was made for a Ruger Wrangler, my Colt happened to fit too.

I like to use 10oz. I figured that I would rather skive the leather a little if it is toward the 12oz size rather than taking a chance of getting stuck with 8oz. She said it may be 3 or 4 weeks before I receive it. I would hate to wait another month for some 10oz leather.

I have another granddaughter coming around Halloween. I need to start looking for her a knife and start making her some sheaths.

Nice I didn’t know that they were still available I’ll need to get a spare!

Ah ok so not in stores
Thanks

That looks great! Good impression.

They look great!

Thanks. I was afraid that the leather may have been too wet, but it turned out good. I can't think of what to stamp around it. I might just leave it alone and keep it for myself if my son doesn't want it.

I decided to keep it. It's in the press now. My son likes the idea of a skull and flames, so I'm going to make him one.

Posted the following in my sub, thought I'd share here as well. Might give someone an idea of what to do or maybe what not to do!

Thought I'd share this in case it might give someone an idea or it'll at least provide some insight to my madness.

Caution this may result in the following:

With the cowbells, having four different blade styles with two types of sheaths for each can be tricky when cutting leather. Belts, Pockets, Drops, Wharns, Spears, Zulus, a mixed bag can make organizing and cutting pieces a real pain. When I had some free time in Texas a couple of months ago I made up some worksheets to help.

Hard templates help with cutting consistency and I have one for each sheath shape and one to layout the welts. The small holes at the bottom of each sheath is to line up the welts during assembly. I'll try to take some pics to show how I cut my leather and it will make more sense later.

I marked each template with a letter and made a sheet that shows which pieces each sheath needs. The leather is cut grain side up, so for example you can see a right hand Drop point needs two "A"'s and a "B". I went with letters instead of numbers to keep things clear (did I need 4 more number 2's or 2 more number 4's? Lettered templates should prevent that).

This might seem a bit ridiculous but it will help us smooth things out a LOT.

First the templates, one for the sheath body and one for the welt layout. B, D, F, and H are on the reverse side respectively.
20220608_183353-01.jpeg

Next the guide to what needs what, different shades to note opposite sides. Dummyproof, I need that sometimes. The nice thing is that belts and pocket sheaths have the same pieces, they just get assembled differently.
20220608_183410-01.jpeg

The worksheet below may look confusing but I can fill it out based on how many of which sheath type I need and determine exactly how many pieces of each template I need to cut out. Starting at the top I write how many belts/pockets, right/lefts I need, and get a total. Then I can do the multiplication and figure out how many of what letter template I need. This was a large run of Drops so it's just the one column, you can see when there's multiple blade types to make, you can imagine how things can get complicated quick without a cheatsheet like this. It also works as a build sheet as I go along.
20220608_183105-01.jpeg

I'm sure I'll run into some things that need tweaked along the way but this is a good start, and should save us a ton of time (I always say us, I must have a mouse in my pocket).
