Whacha Been Up To......

Been a while since I've posted some work here:

A Carlos border stamped belt is one of our staples.

We were packing up some In Stock items. We were setting up a table at a cutting horse clinic I was riding in.

Been some years since we've made reins and headstalls.

Whaha been up to?
That Ironwood with Jade is a gorgeous combination, and the darker sheath is a great match for it. As usual, everything else looks great too. One day I’ll spring for a Ranchero. My Tapadero gets a lot of use all the time but especially when I’m running my firewood bundle machine. I cut the wrap with it on every bundle and I’ve made a lot. IMG_9101.jpegAlso bonus pic of the new donkey that arrived today as a companion for our other donkey that recently lost her buddy. IMG_9102.jpeg

Very cool! Glad you are liking that Tapadero. Thanks for the kind words. When you are ready for a Ranchero we could do that ironwood and jade.

while I'm not really digging the general shape of this sheath, (it's close but not quite there) its function makes me very happy. I'm always looking to create sheaths that have an easy, quiet draw, that also retain the knife well enough that it doesn't rattle around or fall out willy nilly. This one works as perfectly as any sheath I've ever made, and better than most.

Now I can start thinking about how I want to design the carry system...

Here is a pocket sheath I recently completed for my custom modified Russel Green River patch knife.

My edges definitely leave something to be desired, but I was tired of sanding, and since this will live in a pocket I just shot more for functional than beautiful.

Finished off a roughout rifle scabbard at the same time but didn't get any pics. It was a gun leather weekend.

Had a friend come over. He'd ordered a belt and wanted to watch me make it for him. He wanted to see all the steps. That idea kind of morphed into me just doing the tooling, fitting the buckle set and cutting the tapers. He pretty much did the rest with me showing him how. He even ran the sewing machine for the first time. We showed him how, sewed a small section and he did the rest.

This pic is kinda cool cause he's workin on his belt on the finisher while wearing a Horsewright belt:

While here he took an old Leatherman case apart and used it as a pattern to build a new one. This was all him, I just directed.

I think he did a pretty darn good job on both.

Lot’s of practice (trying new techniques) have led to this nearly complete sheath. It’s made of 5 layers of dyed vegi-tan w/ top overlay and ray skin inlay.

The belt loop can be detached by removing 6 Chicago screws. Stold this trick fair n square from the great duramax duramax . 🤪

The sheath is specific to the Carothers (CPK) FK2. I sincerely hope it serves its new owner well, for years to come. He challenged me to increase my humble skill/experience level on this one.

Btw, I’m Michael and have been making leather sheaths for about two years. It’s purely a hobby unless I’m commissioned to make one for a specific knife that both the requestor and I own.

A few of you on this sub have inspired me and even offered pointers. Thank you !

While the handle cures in glue up, got this one done to compliment a "jeans" handle theme. Brown leather with blue ostrich leg and blue stitching:

I appreciate you both ! Means a lot, especially considering the tutoring you’ve both offered my rookie ass ! 🤣

You may have noticed that I haven’t installed the snaps yet on that sheath. I have an arbor press but not compatible dyes for 15mm snaps. What do you fine leather whisperers use ?

Thanks for the kind words my friend 👍 Always a pleasure when we get to talk.

Press ????? What press ???? lol I use old school hammer with setter lol. I find the key for me is multiple light taps vs Thor hits lol.

Thank you. Always a good chat with you, Michael and you are eager to learn.

I do the same as Bill duramax duramax . Oldschool setter and taps. Give you more control and you can “feel” what’s happening, if that makes sense.
