Whacha Been Up To......

Personally, I can relate to having several of the same favourite belt. I may be weird but I wear several different pants/shorts throughout a day for specific purposes and I like to have a belt on each one of them. I would only call a couple of the current belts my favourites, the rest I just make do with. I had never thought of making a few of the same favourite belt but now that you mention it I just may make up more water buffalo overlay belts like I made last winter, with your advice on the edging. It is my absolute go-to belt for comfort and looks.
Well that makes sense. I do that too with shirts. The shirt I ride in, may not be the shirt I work in while in the shop. Heck even the shirt that I do leather working in the shop won’t be the same that I grind blades in. Good deal glad that belt is working out for ya. Did the edges work out well?

Dave, you are one epic son of a gun!
A true Bladeforums treasure❤️
Amen to that.
Thank you guys for the very kind words!

On an un-related but related note, I'm done with ordering from Springfield leather. Placed on order Wednesday afternoon at 12:00pm, didn't ship out until Monday. The shoulders I received were very small, and the premium (priced per square foot) drum dyed hermann oak was largely unusable outside of a small chunk. Just about every other order from them is dissappointing in one way or another and I think I've finally had my fill ;)

Horsewright Horsewright says Wickett & Craig, and Wickett & Craig it's gonna be from here on out!

I'm with you on that. twice I've sent leather back to them and while they are happy to take returns, it's also a time waster and a pain in the ass to do it. I'm not going to crap talk them here about their business because I still order dyes and other stuff from them which they pack real good to prevent leakage but when ordering leather I can't help but think they ship what they don't think will sell at their brick and mortar building. I may be wrong but I'd like to see the quality of leather they offer for sale at their store.

I recently ordered a carving side from Wickett and Craig and that was the nicest piece of leather I ever bought. it was 8-10 ounce and seemed to me more on the 10 ounce side to me, a little on the heavy side for what I do but I can work around it. the quality is there, that's what I was concerned with...little waste or unusable leather.

I have had similar timing issues with Springfield. Last order from them was on the 5th and wasn’t shipped until the 15th, no comment no explanation. I live in the same state as them for Pete’s sake, it should have been shipped and to my door much sooner than that.

Here is a Hermann Oak belt blank I finished up out of that order.

I do the same. My shop clothes are pretty nasty, ferric chloride spills, epoxy, holes in the shirts everywhere, etc. I usually change the shirt at least before running to the store. Sometimes the shorts, depending on how bad they are, especially if I've been wet grinding! Most of my pants/shorts have belts in them all of the time except when they are in the washer. I may try making up my own belts soon, but since I am hand stitching, it may take a while, especially cuz I am fat and need a long belt! LOL.

Your help on those chrome tanned Water Buffalo edges was invaluable, Dave. I wasn't sure how the edges would hold up with use but they may be my best yet. They are not showing any wear at all.

That is my favourite belt and always my go-to because I feel it is classy and unusual. I had a request to make a special belt for a birthday present so I chose to make one of the Water Buff overlays, just like my own. It went over really well.

I really enjoy reading your posts about your work and adventures and viewing the wonderful photos. I've read many of your threads and tutorials and they have been super helpful for my own leatherwork. Your personality really comes through in your writing. On another forum I belong to someone listed their home as Tehachapi, CA. My first thought was "Hey, I know a guy who lives in Tehachapi!" Thanks for all you cheerfully do.

Your work is worthy of great leather. I get mine from the Hide House.

This one is for a narrow waisted knife, I designed it so the majority of the handle is in the sheath. Being a narrow knife I didn’t want to make a narrow sheath so I made it a little wider and a wider welt that adds structural strength overall to the sheath. The customer wanted my belt loop swivel instead of a fixed one. Also requested that I sew it up with orange thread. Inside along the spine I glued in a piece of cushioning deer skin leather to make it a compression fit.
This was a knife that I had up for sale and the request for a leather sheath was part of the deal, even so I wasn’t keen on making it as the knife doesn’t have a guard to help with retention but it worked out great. I added one of my bobtail fobs to aid in drawing out the knife.

I didn’t want just a straight rectangle shaped sheath so I made the angle at the bottom but left enough to keep it strong.

So you don't order directly from Wickett & Craig? Curious as to your rationale behind that because I trust your logic.
Shipping is often quicker and generally cheaper. Also they are the outfit we get many other leathers from, particularly bags and leggings types. So saving quite a bit on shipping that way too, a combo order. I have occasionally bought directly from the tannery but I’ve been buying from the Hide House for many years. Its very quick to order and not unusual to have a side of leather in a couple of days from ordering.

Years ago I did a liil tour of the Hide House here in these pages. It was the first time I'd been up there in person. Dang if I can find it though to link it for you. Here's a few of the pics in this thread.

I love it!
Thanks, Lorien!

DAMN!!!!!!!............Musta been inside all weekend working on that beauty!!!!😉

Great job my friend!!!!!! Hey how's the brother healing??? Good as new yet??
Haha. I have been working on it a bit at a time for a while. With Canada Post on strike, I can afford to take my time now.

Well, a couple weeks ago he went for a checkup and the Dr said “live life as normal!” So praise God for that. My brother is a miracle!
Thanks for asking.
