Whacha Been Up To......

Water Buffalo. As Dave mentioned it doesn't stamp well...or wet mold. This means your designs have to be spot on for retention. And edge finishing presents a challenge. I figured it out though, beeswax, heat, burnish...repeat.

The juice is Worth the squeeze!!! Nice job looks great.....👍

Played with the full veg tan water buffalo! Definitely doesn't wet form and pretty stiff when working. I was hoping that since it has a nice dye and texture, it would save steps, but with my wider guards, it almost takes longer than texturing and dyeing regular leather.

That water buffalo, I think they call it brown, makes great dress belts! Nice job!

I absolutely love this thread! It’s pretty much 7 years of Horsewright Horsewright making all of us wannabe leather workers regret even picking up a head knife, punching stitching hole and trying to stamp a sheath that remotely resembles some masterpiece he posted that probably took him 7 and a half minutes to finish!! And don’t get me started on how bad his wife makes all of us look!!!! 😂 Seriously though thanks for everything you do for us mere mortals Dave, we’d all be buying Tandy leather without your wisdom…👍🏼👍😉

Dang has this thread been going on that long? Wow hadn't really realized it. You are indeed welcome. Just trying to help folks not make some of the mistakes I have for sure.

Last week/weekend we were gone for about 5 days. We'd been practicing and working really hard getting ready for a horseshow in Parkfield Ca. This show particularly honors the traditional Californio style of horsemanship and stockmanship. Well about a week prior to the show I was asked if I would be one of the three judges for the show, which I did. Only bummer was I couldn't compete obviously. I was a lil concerned as Nichole was competing in the Intermediate level in all three competitions, Stockhorse class, comprising of a drywork pattern, a herdwork class and a roping class. There was also two standalone Classes, the Sorting class and Rodear Roping. However, they scheduled me to either be judging something else or on a break whenever the intermediate class was going so I never actually saw her ride except during the rodear roping when I did watch her go but seeing on a break I wasn't involved in judging her. Judging the Sorting competition for the Advanced and the Novice class:

I did have a chair up there on the flatbed but I could see better sometimes when standing. I had a great scribe, Ryan and she really helped keep me lined out, organized and where I was suppose to be at any given time. That's her siting there on the flatbed with me. In the red shirt is our friend Tyrin. He was one of the "pros". Each competitor is assigned a pro and they help and coach you during each event and are an active partner in all except the drywork pattern. Tyrin is a good friend that we've known for years. He use to come up and cowboy for us when we had our ranch. During lunch he was helping some folks get ready for the roping classes. He's got his Horsewright knife on.

This deal is really interesting because there are more points awarded for how something is done as opposed to getting it done. You could go out and if you handled your horse and the cattle well you could miss your roping shots and still score very well, in fact it's possible to actually win the class. I don't know of any other events like that. Sunday after noon the pros formed teams and there was a Calcutta auction and I judged that too. The tan vest towards the center is this ol guy.:

Anyhoo Nichole did very well and won the Stockhorse class as well as taking second in the Rodear Roping. So Since she won her first buckle, she got busy as soon as we got home making a belt for it.

In fact Tehachapi, our lil town was well represented at the awards ceremony. From left to right: Tammy won the Novice StockHorse class (and she has her Horsewright purse), Kathleen won the Novice Bridle Horse Rodear Roping, Tyrin who been coaching them for about a month and a half prior to the event and Nichole who won the Intermediate Stockhorse.

Here's the belt Nichole made for her buckle:

And her partner Josie that obviously a big part of the win:

I'd finished off a batch of knives just prior to leaving and ended up selling four and trading one. Funny thing I got that knife back in a subsequent trade with a different guy that had traded the guy I had traded it too (lots of trading). He was looking for a shorter one so I traded a Mestano back to him for The Sonoran Belt Knife.

Some of the knives and sheaths:
