Whacha Been Up To......

I was very nervous making something to dimensions as it’s not always straight forward. So I was waiting to hear if it did work out and I was glad to hear that it worked well.
Burgundy dye airbrushed on and some brown tiger thread, I didn’t want to put anything in the middle because I knew that the knife might distort any embossing there, so just some border embossing and a grooved edge at the opening

I don’t stitch across the leather as it weakens and can tear under tension just like perforated paper over time. So I glue the belt loop down and stitch the half moon.

Thanks for the opportunity and your kind words!

The sheath that came with the knife was paper thin so I asked Gary to work His magic. Gary did a fantastic job!
A Great sheath from a Great person.
Very interesting knife. Can you tell us what that is sticking out the butt end of the knife? I searched online but found very little info on that particular knife and nothing about that silver-coloured piece.

Pretty sure it has the part sticking out of the butt to enclosed the tip of the blade when closed, as the blade is longer than the handle. John

Well, I dyed my wife's white Honda Pilot Antique Briar Brown tonight! 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I guess the brand new bottle of dye I bought today fell out of the bag and rolled under my car. I went out to the grocery store and as I was backing up, felt a bump and heard a pop. Yup, dye bottle rolled under my car. Lucky it was water based, so I was able to hose everything off quickly!!

Ouch

Happy with this one! Water buffalo, orange threads. I used the belt sander to clean up the profile up to 220 grit belt running slow and then hand sanded up to 600, then Tokonole and burnished!

Got these 3 done after my exploding leather dye incident!

Got the water buffalo restitched so the holes line up better and finished off (Leather sealer, mink oil and Saddle Butter):

Pouch with red thread using pre dyed craftsman shoulder:

Split toe with black thread in pre dyed craftsman shoulder for this damascus blade:

I will probably remake the split toe; it was my first one and I should have done the narrowing for the blade a bit higher up. The guard is fatter, so it needs more room at the opening and I was trying to slim down the blade portion. Or would a double sided welt and wet forming work better, or thicker welt at the handle section and skive it down? Some of my handles are chunkier and have wider guards (around 7/8" or so across the front), so its more challenging to get sheaths to fit nicely. Wet forming helps stretch the leather a bit, though, but not always feasible with the water buffalo!

I do like the predyed craftsman shoulder; it has a more worn look to it, some stretch marks and stuff for character, so it kinda looks like a broken in sheath a bit.

Took a break from making pocket clip sheaths and made this one with a stamped/embossed center panel.

You got no business being this good, whatever method you settled on with the stitching has turned out real nice.

More of the same from me, but I'm finally getting a burnish I'm happy with... although it doesn't show in this work in progress pics ;)

I got this hand crank machine a couple years ago, took it all apart and put it back together and was stoked to get using it- but I already had projects underway that I needed to hand stitch anyway, plus got a realish job- and I just couldn't figure out how to use it at the time.

recently, I've been really needing to get this thing going and I've spent a lot of time screwing around with it and trying to figure it out. As much youtube vids as I could find about it, and every time coming away with another piece of the puzzle.

just now, I sat down at the machine and took a real scientific look at my situation. And finally, after all this time, I finally got it to stitch! It's dumb, but a big day for me. I appreciate any and all wins 😁
