What’s your max?

I did $150 on a Leatherman Charge Tti, for a folder, $75 ish (UK so hard to be accurate) on an excellent Manly Wasp S90V is plenty.

It’s easy to forget that budgets rise exponentially as the bug bites; I need sharp knives for certain jobs and that’s it. No collector plans.

Similar with watches, torches, MTB kit (mine is fairly old but all top notch kit), camping kit (we wild/backpack camp but also spend 6 weeks a year touring Europe in our VW California campervan), etc.

But it’s nice to see a general lack of snobbery often found in watch and car forums. It feels fairly inclusive.

I don’t have one. If I absolutely HAD to have it, I’ll find the moolah.

I’ve spent entirely too much money on knives.
And forks and spoons and pens for that matter. Totally agree. Not only do I buy what i want. Sometimes I'll take a midrange knife and for no reason at all sink another few hundred into it just to make sure if gone off the deep end. o_O

I keep it at or under $200 because I use my knives and see no point in going beyond that price on something that sees potential hard use. No way am I paying for a knife that costs the same as a new AR-15...if I'm shelling out $1000+ then it goes bang bang. I don't need a safe queen to stare at, I need a tool to do a job and beating up a blade over $200 seems senseless imo

$650 is the highest so far and going down. The ONLY knife that might change that would be a Holt but having a chance at one I like is as likely as CNN praising Trump.

This year I am being particularly particular. Hoping to buy no more than 6 the whole year.

I use my knives daily. Do you use your $1000 ar15 daily? I mean I have them too just saying it's a tool I choose to invest in because it's in my hand a few times a day not locked up in a safe and maybe once or twice a month it goes out for and then cost me more money to enjoy. It a matter of perspective.

I use to spend way more when I had far less money ($500-$600) when I first joined BFs. Now that I have way more money and making far better financial decisions it's gone down to a max of around $200 (and that's super rare). I am typically well under $100 now. Dave Ramsey really messed with my knife habbits and everything else.....lol (but honestly for the better).

$175 or so. Self imposed limit. I'm totally content with a production knife (or better yet, a reduced price user) at this price point.

I've said it before. I realize I will never own a Sebenza, mid tech, or custom knife, ect. I'm ok with that.

Depends on whether it'll be a user or for display in a collection. For users I would hesitate to use anything over $50... Although I do plan on buying one quality knife as a user, most likely a spyderco Para 3 or Manix 2. Other than that I'd say $250 max for most knives in a collection. I would like to have a folder custom made, which would obviously be much more than that, but it would be the holy grail in my collection.

Here's an answer that makes sense.

When I see a knife, I can usually tell fairly quickly if it is a "must have" of some kind, and then I take appropriate action. Some things are beyond my reach and thankfully, I can realize this most times.

I had planned on a more elaborate post on this topic but that pretty much sums it up, and sometimes less is more, haha.

$150.00

No matter what we discuss here, knives are still tools that are meant to be used. With that comes the possibility that they will be lost, stolen, or broken. Since I don't want to collect knives just to keep them pristine in their boxes, I had to decide how much I was willing to risk on a single knife.

depends on the time of year and schedule but my guns spring-fall see a few thousand rounds. its all relative and true fully reliant on the perspective of the individual...like my pipes and cigars....there's smoking pipes that cost no joke $10,000 and they don't do anything that a $200 pipe won't do....I mean I get having something based on who the maker is etc but there's a rational limit in my mind...a lot of guys love their crk but I think they're ugly but if u like em and have the coin have at it!!!! if a knife costs as much as a new firearm I gotta raise an eyebrow at that. I'm guilty of it myself thou so perhaps I'm a tad hypocritical....I do have swords and what purpose does that serve really? dome have been used for machete type work thou loI

The 200.00 range is now my limit unless its something real special. No more China knives in this range either, im tired of taking a big loss if I want to resell it.And the way I see the prices of knives going, after the 200-250 range how much more are you really getting, thats where the point of diminishing returns starts.

Short run max is close to $0.00. If I ever inventory my knives to find out how many there are and sell most of them, maybe I would buy a nicer custom slip joint, but I doubt it.

Around $200. I usually save a few bills here and there toward the next one. And if I don't have one I am really wanting, my wallet starts itching by that point. And personally, I don't see the need for spending more anyway.

For a fixed blade I've spent a Max of $500 usd on a CPK HDFK. I'm probably done spending over $275 on a fixed blade. As far as folders I try not to spend more than $200. I like to keep it around $150-$175.

Short answer, because you didn't ask for a biography; $100

Longer version:

Wow...
Either some of you guys are some real high rollers with more cash than I've ever had or I'm just really cheap.lol.

Y'all talkin' about $600, $750, $1,000 or $1,200. A few even went over $2,000! For just a single knife? If you guys have too much cash and just need to unload a little feel free to pm me for an adress! Lol. I wouldn't mind at all to help.

I've been a knife nut since I was a small child. Edc-er since I was 9 and never even heard the term until years later.

Really, the only time I've ever broke the $300 limit was years ago. I was a teenager, the Cold Steel catalog came in. They were coming out with the Warrior Series and I HAD TO HAVE an O-Katana. I worked extra hours at my entry level job and saved money as best I could for over 2 months and took a special road trip with a friend to Smokey Mountain Knife Works to claim my treasure. Nearly $400 spent on the one toy IIRC.

Turns out I wasn't a legendary Samurai or even a Ninja Warrior. Who knew! It may have been news to me at the time. Lol.

One of the most disappointing purchases of my life. I still have the sword because even though I have no purpose for it what-so-ever I doubt I could sell it for much of anything. I refuse to throw it away because... I don't know why. So my $400 sword is sitting in the corner of a storage shed.

Only other two knives I own that went over $200 are both in use and are great knives but not as impressive or amazingly awesome as they were on my imagination. Or the advertising and reviews. Not near as disappointing as my super Samurai weapon, but they certainly didn't justify the hype and build up. Yes, I do use them.

Anymore I mostly buy sub-$100. Often I buy used from the flea market. That's where I got my Leatherman Charge Ti for $30 IIRC. Got my Buck 112 for $8. Etc. Etc.

Also shop the big auction site alot. Just got an Alox Pocket Pal from Victorinox in great condition for about $11 delivered and am very happy with it.

Anything over $200 and you're in firearm territory. I look at a knife that's $400 and think "I could buy another Glock for that!". A little more and I could buy a nice Ruger magnum. I'm a revolver guy.

At the $2,000+ range a few of you guys mentioned I can't help but think "I could buy a Jeep for that! With money left over for a few groceries and a night out with my wife!".
I don't see the value.

Diminishing returns is a real thing in my humble opinion. It'll have to be a very sweet knife on a day I'm packing cash and feeling extra spendy to ever break $100 on a knife again. I'd rather hunt the bargains. It's more fun and more rewarding for me.

To each his own. Enjoy your blades guys. A great day to all of you.
Carry on.

I thought that too when I first got interested in knives back in September. A month ago I thought I wouldn't break $200. Now I'm drooling over a Shiro. Such is the addiction.
Luckily the world if traditionals is full of sub $100 choices for me.
