What’s your max?

my max for USING a knife is around $150 (or $200 cdn)... I'm willing to go much higher for purely collectible/art quality blades, but so far I've avoided that rabbit hole

crk's and shiro's and cpk's have almost made me blow past this point but I have a stubborn nature

I’m currently being tempted by a knife with an $850 price tag. I feel it’s too much to spend on a single knife. But ...I want it.

I could easily buy 2 or 3 other knives that I so desire for said amount. So the debate in my head rages on. Logic vs desire.

I think of it this way. I'm damn near 50. I could stroke out at anytime or get hit by a bus walking down the road. I have a life insurance policy that will take care of my girls and as long as the bills are paid, there's money in the bank, and my family isn't left wanting why shouldn't I have something nice for all the hard work I have done my entire life. I will be lucky to have another 25 years on this earth. I just make sure I leave a log so my girls know what knife is worth apx. How much on the secondary so should I push up daisies they have an idea of value and don't get screwed over. Buy it if all the things in life are taken care of and enjoy what you earned.

So far around $180 but lately I been looking real hard at a large sebenza 21 @ $450....I'm gonna end up buying it I know it...sheesh
Give the secondary market a look. You can find them in the $350 range. Still in super clean shape. And sometimes running the factory edge. Picked this one up for right around that price. It has a wicked edge or a kme edge on it but I can tell you it's never been broken in. Action is still out of the box new.

100 euros including a good sheath. And that in only a rare case for something special. You can get a perfectly fine, tough knife for under 50 euros.
The only possible exception would be if I would lose my trusty Laguiole and absolutely needed a replacement of similar quality.
For the moment I need more skill, not more knives.

50 is not old at all.
Pace yourself...you'll be 80 before you know it.

My father once said "if I had known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself".

So far I've been able to keep it under $1k for a folder...but just:eek: It's something I've wanted for a REALLY long time though, only available in custom form (Sawby Self-lock)

a few years ago I spent $1900 on a custom division Shirogorov 95T, and then $1100 on a Shirogorov cf111. After those I have spent anywhere from $80 to $800, most of my EDC knives though are about $200 or less. If I add anything else to the collection I need to sell some and will probably limit myself to no more than $500-$700
Funny I started to collect Japanese Kitchen knives many years ago, I had no idea how much some of them would appreciate in value as the makers either retired or passed away. For example we are talking maybe a 1000% increase from when I bought it, so the high price I paid back when has now become a huge bargain
So value is always in the eye of the owner

I don't have any serious blade itches so far this year, but I am considering another small fixed blade but it won't come close to any internal limits I have on knife cost.

Most I’ve ever spent is $600-$700 on a Busse or Randal. I don’t really see a reason for me to go above that for what my needs are.

With that said....

A question I’m now asking myself is what is the least amount of money I’d spend on a knife since I won’t carry or use cheaper blades.

Eight months ago my limit was $200 and then life happens and today I own two CRKs and three XM-18's with costly hardware upgrades. So I guess my limit is driven by passion.

When I was a kid, I was blown away at the knives over $20. 35 years later $20 is the bottom of the bottom.
That said I try to keep purchases in the $100-200 range. There have been a few over $300.

$300-$350. I'd be scared to use them if I went over that. I might go above that one day, but it would be a display piece.
