What are local knife shops thinking?

Looking now, the knives I can remember pricing for look to be right at MSRP pricing. The Spyderco Lionspy was actually priced higher than the Lionsteel SR-1s they had.

There is a gun shop in Baton Rouge that actually has a decent selection of knives. They were trying to sell them at MSRP.

The clerk I talked with actually knew quite a bit about knives, too.

I was in Bud's in Lexington the other day and they have a case of knives. I didn't look at them closely as there were a bunch of people standing around.

I have seen stores selling knives that i paid $55-$65 for, at $150-$180. I just use that store to handle them. They are NUTS !!!

Places like your local shop just CANT compete with online sites... NOBODY can anymore... not even places like best-buy because they have to pay for their housing/utilites/workers ect..ect... alot of these online sites are 1-2 people working out of their home who are okay with making $35 profits on each knife they sell as they hold down another job in life... thats just my thought..

To the few guys arguing that MSRP or higher prices are required to run a B&M store, what about stores like the one in JDavis882 frequents in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsGhiFTH7Sg It's a huge knife store, with low prices, and check out the crowd. That place looks and sounds packed! I think they sell more items than just knives, but they're able to successfully sell tons of HIGH end knives at competitive prices and even earn business from us savvy knife knuts.

I dont think you can really compare two stores in 2 different areas. I've seen Johns videos of his store that has a lot of knives and you can tell theirs a big demand of higher end knives there. If their wasnt such high of a demand they wouldnt have the stock and prices they do, I bet they get them directly from the manufacturer to. I believe they do some business online as well. Im no economic major but I dont think you can compare 2 stores like that.

Good question.
For me it boils down to: How much are you willing to pay for buying "offline".
While I am willing to pay a premium, there is a limit.

As for stores are different... that is my impression too.
Some are run knowledgeable folks, some are there for profits only.

I try to stay away from impulse buys, but then some impulses stay for very, very long.
Not that it helps long buying that next one. ;)

for some reason, all benchmades and spartans at canadian dealers are jacked up $15 bucks for the spartans and $45-50 for the benchmades, it drives me insane too because by the time all the import taxes and fees are paid I end up paying $5-10 more than I would have if I bought it in Canada.
