What are some good 4'' blade for under $50

Javenpaa Puukko...much more knife than anything out there for the money.

If you want to take a step up from Mora you can try a Marttiini. Good Price. Ontario Spec Plus is also an option. You can find SOG Seal Pups for a little over $50. The Gerber Freeman is OK. Browning also has a few, but I can't remember the names. I saw some Marbles on ebay a while back "Buy it Now" for under $50. There's a lot out there.

Forgot to mention I am also looking for a drop point blade and uncoated so that rules out knives like the usaf survival knife, etc...

+1 on the used TAK-1. Love that knife and have no worrys abusing the hell out of it (if i have to)
A little paint stripper will take the coating off in no time too.

Thanks, but I am not one for buying other people's used knives.

Järvenpää Lapland Puukko
(Top) The large size is over 9 1/2" overall. It has a blade about 5" (13cm) long, .88" wide, and .119" thick. The sheath and knife weigh just over 6 ounces. This one might be better for those with larger hands, and would make a good hunting knife.

#5218, polished carbon steel blade, $54.

(Middle) The medium size is about 8 1/4" overall. The blade is about 3 7/8" (10cm) long and .725" wide. The knife and sheath weigh a bit less than 5 ounces. Many think this is the ideal size for everyday use.

#5226-b, unpolished carbon steel blade, black except for the bevel, (shown) $44.
#5226, polished carbon steel blade, $45.
#5226-o, stainless steel blade, $49.

I've used the middle one and the Leuku for hunting and fishing knives for quite a while now and they are great knives. It's easy to get them so sharp you won't feel it when you cut yourself (don't ask). Beyond shaving sharp. These aren't knives that I would hammer point first into a tree, pry open a crate, or pound through a log to make them into axes, but for knife chores, they are tops.

I use thsi set:

Although it's above what you want to pay, it's a good deal if you also want a large knife to go with the smaller one (I find dressing/butchering large game like deer and hogs to be easier with the Leuku).

A combination of the 3 7/8" puukko and the 7" leuku in a double sheath.
#5629; in carbon steel (shown), $125.

I was going to suggest the Finish Utility Knife from ragnar too, or any Mora that strikes your fancy. The 510 and the M2000 would be the front runners there, IMO.

I think I've also seem some of the used or older RAT stuff for around $50, if you keep an eye out.

As a more personal plug, I'd hugely recommend getting yourself a good trio, like the Vic Farmer, Fiskars hatchet and a Mora 510/#1/780/whatever. That will run you right at $50 and all your bases will be more than covered.

Skam, how did you manage to break two Moras?

No offense Dr but I am tired of explaining it. There is 3 threads in the past few weeks with the info.

Suffice to say it wasnt hard and was not something out of the ordinary you would expect a knife to do.

They are not hard use blades you can even begin to abuse.

Oh, and to answer the original question, other than Mora's the three new knives from Cold Steel are all winners. I really like my Roach Belly, but the Finn Bear, and Canadian belt knife look good too.

If you want to take a step up from Mora you can try a Marttiini.

Agreed!
I have 4 of them; they are razor sharp out of the box and feel very, very solid.
Much more so than the Moras.

Benchmade Rant Bowie is about the size and price range your looking at Quality on benchmade stuff is pretty high included factory link for the picture. prices on line run from about $35 on sale to around $45 or so

And now they're Made in the USA.

Its funny how some of the most well known and respected survival experts don't rely on "hard use" blades.

Thats funny many of the top guys I know teach to carry tough blades and not pieces of s$#t. Just because I MAY get away with a rusty tuna can lid doesnt make it smart.

You want to carry a cheap POS knife go right ahead.

I have been battling natural selection on the publics behalf for many years and I see no end yet. Stupid is as stupid does.

Skam just needs to have his own thread about why Moras suck. Then he can just interject the link into every thread without directly exposing us to it.

Not the 2 I broke obviously.

Which mora models were they?

---------------------------

To the OP; I would spend an extra ~$30.00 and get a Fallkniven F1. It'll last a lifetime.

Moras are OK. I prefer Roselli for scandinavian-grinds though. A Roselli Carpenter will run you about $55.00 :
