What are some good 4'' blade for under $50

Moras are good knives, but they are not to be abused. Though I would agree with Skammer that there are better knives out there. Likewise, no knife should be abused whether it's hard use or not. I have been carrying Moras for years I never had a problem. That's because all I do is cut with them. The only things knives are designed to do is cut, some can chop. If I need to hammer something in the woods I can just as easily find a small rock. I basically rely on a Nessmuk style trio of tools. I can see using a harder use knife if I were in the military. In the bush I take what I need and that's it.

Why Moras suck.

1. They are not made of unobtanium

2. They don't cost a weeks pay

3. You can not use one to pry logs, boulders, slabs of concrete, cars, or other heavy items you are trapped under

4. They do not look anything like something Rambo would use

5. They do not chop, as everyone knows the most manly endeavor possible in the great outdoors

6. They, like your dog, are not very good protection from attacking lions or bears

7. They are lightweight, ie, no bragging rights for the heavy loads you carry

8. They have no ultra cool blacktical coating

9. They are no longer issued to any Soldiers in the world, a true sign of woods worthiness

10. There is not a model with anything close to a 9" blade, as everyone knows the optimum size for manliness and all woods activities

I stopped at 10, even though I could keep going, I think that is plenty to prove that even though moras are affordable, made of very good steel, take and hold a razors edge, are a perfect size for most real world uses and most of all cut very well, for use in the world of bushcraft, SAR, and woods use in general, they suck. I love you man, that was some funny SH%T! I saw the 9" blade one and thought, dang, I gave one away as a gift, maybe my friend can post pics later. I am on the side of mora as far as cutting goes...they carve wood so well its crazy. I admit, that I prefer tougher knives, but respect Mora, and carry my Mora 2000 often. Skammer, I agree with you alot, I love tough, Beefy knives..I own quite a few...I think that you have to accept that just because you hate Moras, they aren't going away...and many people will use them with no problems. I think that we can all carry whatever works for us...if we could all accept this of others, than we would argue here, alot less. I think that this forum would still be fun without the drama....but maybe thats just me. I am making a promise to myself, I will never get involed in another knife size or folder/ fixed argument again....lets see how long that lasts!!!:D

I am always reading true survival stories. You know, the ones we often see posted here. Pretty much any and all I come across. I can't recall one where a knife was the difference between life and death. Yes, any knife will make survival easier, but not necessary. Usually, its the decisions the person or people make that save their lives, not the tools they have on them.

Hundreds of years ago, when survival was a day to day thing for all who lived. And when people lived in wilderness areas that dwarf the ones left today, no one had a knife that was even close to as well built as Mora, let alone a Busse. So why is it Skam that you feel a Busse or other super knife is a must have? I am not arguing with ya, and to be honest my favorite knife is my Scrap Yard SS4. I just want to know why you are so inclined to believe that survival is Dependant on a super knife.

You can argue all you want, but facts are facts. And the fact is real woodsman, and real survivors have gotten by with less than quality tools and knives since the beginning of time. History has proven it. We would not be here if it weren't so.

I'll contend with that statement.
They didn't have plastic handles back then, but I suspect the wood handles Moras, as well as the Lappland puukkos and Leukus are very much like what they had back then. And yes, they worked well. But, unlike what seems to be the fad today, those people weren't afraid to carry axes to do their heavy work (Moras and puukkos being from northlands where the axe is king). I think that's the difference, a lot of people seem to be unable to carry 2 pounds of hatchet to do their heavy work, so they pick the smallest blade they can and beat the hell out of it.

If you're going to do that, then I'd agree that a big "superknife" would be what you want.

Helle knives are the best bet, in my opinion. The resoning for this bias, is the fact that the blades are laminated steel, with solid wood handles, full tangs, and minimilistic embellishments. They are made for the hunter, woodsman, and general outdoors enthusiast.I love my Helle Jubileum Knife, which I purchased from Ragner, last October. The Jubileum is more than $50, but many other Helle models would fit the bill for you, at around $50. A better value knife, I have not found.

LOL, your right runningboar, Moras do suck, and I just hate how much I've been using my new 780, the edge it takes and how well it cuts, it just sucks :D

LMAO

If you can read I have never said survival is dependant on a knife. Never have I said A Busse knife is the only maker of decent knives far from it. Never have I said you cant get usefullness out of a smaller blade.

Between you and Chris who is more challenged? Reading comprehension is not a strong suit for either of you. I suggest a history lesson of my posts and a good use of the search function. Hell start in this thread and actually read what I have said.

As for history and the use of edged tools. Ancient man used what he could fashion and got by, his skill level increased as did his tool making and he always upgraded. At the dawn of iron tools man used those instead of stone. Native peoples all around the world switched through trade to steel because it was a better option. Even today when westerners visit primitive peoples they trade with them for modern steel to upgrade as they gain access. They traded spears for firearms etc...

Ancient man used bone and stone cutting tools not because he chose to but because he had no other option.

I have that option, and I choose to do better than just good enough.

So should you.

I don't think Skammer is arguing that Survival is dependent on a super knife. He is arguing that your chances will be better, and I agree. I often wonder how, if many of the survivors from yesteryear were offered better knives, they would jump at them. My guess is that they all would, they were very practical people.

Moras are fine for what they are. However, most of my folders can easily equal and surpass the Mora, so I don't carry one. I have all the "Mora cutting" tasks covered by my folders, so for a fixed blade I want something sturdier.

A lot of the posters make the comment that a knife is for cutting, and their Mora does all that well, so they carry a hatchet for chopping. Fine. My folders are for cutting, and my fixed blade can both chop and cut.

I'm a little busy right now, but I'll make you a deal. Get together and compile a cutting list, tasks, materials, etc. Then I'll send one of you my flat ground fixed blades, and you can see for yourself if it cuts as well as your Mora. You might be surprised.

Skam just needs to have his own thread about why Moras suck. Then he can just interject the link into every thread without directly exposing us to it.

Its more fun this way. The mora love in must have balance, sorry.

Send me your mora and I will break them for you. :)

Wont take much.
