What are the 'must have' SAKs?

I've had a big red ''Rucksack'' for 10-15 years. That big locking blade still snaps sharply to attention to this day. Although I admittedly rarely use the old girl now.... Can't let it go though.

I just love the Tinker, surprised so few mentions of it
must be because it lacks alox scales :p

I would have to say my Cybertool 34 is a 'must have'. I have been EDCing it for over a decade and don't intend to stop any time soon, mind you I AM a computer tech. I like the Cybertool 41 - those extra tools could be handy, but it is noticeably thicker looking than my Cybertool 34. The screwdriver with swappable bits on the Cybertools is WAY better than any of the other screwdrivers - one of the Cybertool models should be a 'must have' for every computer tech on the planet IMO!

I recently bought a few more SAKs to play with and they are all good:
The Ranger, Trekker & Alox Farmer are all good options for camping and the Alox Cadet makes a great smaller/lighter SAK for when you want to carry less.

3 of the must haves? I'd definitly say an OHT, I prefer the non-serrated for hiking. I think the soldier or pioneer depending on if you want a key-ring, and huntsman. I think between those you'd have almost all tools you could need and be very happy!

I've impulsively bought about 10 SAKs in my lifetime, but i've recently realized what's my favs according to a specific philosophy.
I prefer a SAK to be the traditional camping/boyscout/military folding knife. With this in mind, I believe it should first have 2 blades, the second for a backup.
A can opener for your meals. and a really usefull "woods" friendly tool, that eliminates most of the junk offered with SAKS. Yes the scissors are handy when EDCing, but if your other 2 blades are sharp enough its not needed unless you HAVE to cut in a perfect straight line.
The most useful extra tool I have found with SAKs is the wood saw. This thing is a monster worker. yeah, you cant cut down a tree with it, but its handy for fabricating notches in branches if you're building a shelter or such.
If you have too much stuff, it gets too wide, so the HIKER with the saw is what i'd want, especially since it has a phillips screwdriver instead of a cork screw, and this makes it slimmer.
I also have a vintage Hoffritz WAITER with just a blade and cap lifter plus corkscrew on the back. I hooked up a small light to it and its my non offensive "go to a party or bar" knife. You'll be the hero if you have a bottle opener handy.

So to recap:
1. HIKER
2. WAITER

in fact i wouldn't mind having doubles of these.

Guess dividing into size cathegories is smart enough...
- 58mm Victorinox Alox Classic
- 91mm Victorinox Tinker (or Super Tinker if u are really into scissors)
- 111mm Victorinox One hand trekker (non serrated blade - personal preference)
and even if it's somehow a "non SAK", I do like the alox solo blade...

Forgive a more generic answer, but although I own many SAKs the exact differences between the various specific models are impossible to keep track of.

If I were to lose my collection and was able to pick only three Swiss Army Knives as replacements, here's what I do:
1) Solo with the nylon handle
2) An Alox mid-range model, perhaps the Farmer
3) A fancier model with a ridiculous number of tools, like the SwissChamp

Explorer-corkscrew & philips head screwdriver & magnifying glass-very handy.
now if only it came in alox...

My essential SAK*s are:
Alox Pioneer / Alox soldier: most useful and rugged Victorinox I've had. Also my most carried EDC.
Alox Cadet: Thinnest two layer SAK I've seen. As thick as Alox Solo I have
Victorinox Yeoman / SiwssBianco Yeoman MK III 3 layers: maginifyer glass, philips screw driver scissors, main blade + whole bunch other thing in mere 3 layers

For me it's the 1980:s Explorer. I also like the Compact.

i would say the classic with alox scales if you want to go really light weight, and the executive. the executive is a great pocket knife

Any SAKs are must have... you could get your eyes blindfolded and choose any 3 saks you can touch and still got the great chance than they would be usefull configuration...
