What are you watching & why? (splain)

Just watched Keanau Reeves in "47 Ronin" for the umpteeth time because I didn't want to watch the SuperBowl.

It's still as enjoyable to me as it has always been. Better than Tom Cruise's "Last Samurai" (which is still good in it's own way) IMO.

It's a modern retelling of an old Japanese legend about 47 samurai who become "ronin" upon the killing of their "lord" and who avenge his death.

A little bit of old style Japanese samurai sword fighting, a little bit of magic/CGI, a little bit of romance and a little bit of hari-kari. What more could you ask for? LOL! ;)

Watch it again if you've seen it before and watch it for the 1st time if you've never seen it before.

Cool. I always forget about that one. Thanks for reminding me. I’ll try and watch it this week.

We watched The Menu (2022) this evening. What a trippy ride. Went into it with zero expectations. It just got more and more bizarre. I had no idea where it was going. The plot may have been a little weak but it was FUN. We both enjoyed it. Ralph Fiennes, Nicholas Hoult, and Anya Taylor-Joy star.

On the subject of food films, we watched Delicious (2021) a few months ago. French production. Really enjoyable film. Takes place on the eve of the French Revolution. Subtitled.

"Is it something I said?"

She was definitely the worst part of 1883. I also disliked the modern lingo a LOT - they should have known better.

That said, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill did way better than I was prepared to give them any credit for. Sam Elliott aside (who is always a treat), there simply are far better Western series to enjoy.

I've always enjoyed this movie!

Currently about to watch episode 4 of the last of us

The friend I was sharpening knives with Saturday gave me his HBO account and told me I had to watch it

Watched the first three episodes of The Last of Us last night with the family. It's safe to say that it's as good as folks are saying it is and it definitely has our attention. My kids wanted to watch more but 'twas a school night so... next time.

(ETA: Also, there are Buck knives in it - which is always cool to see)

Watched 47 Ronin and John Wick this week.

47 Ronin was fun. I always struggle with victorious tragedies though. Gladiator and Braveheart are sort of in the same vein for me. Great films, but they get me down a little.

John Wick was fun too, as long as I just want to see Keanu Reeves kick @$$ from one end to the other. I had a hard time empathizing with him though, since he was already a bad@$$ with almost unlimited resources who was both feared and respected in the underworld, before the event that sent him off the rails. He had powerful allies everywhere. I think I generally prefer origin stories, where they take an every man and transform them through a series of tests/tasks. I enjoy putting myself in the protagonist’s shoes. John Wick was definitely not an every man by any stretch. It absolutely feels ripe for a prequel. Felt like a Death Wish/Matrix/Leon the Proffessional mashup. I started the second installment almost immediately. Actually laughed when Lawrence Fishbourne made his appearance.

I've watched Pale Blue Eye twice now and am getting ready to see it for a third time this evening. I found it to be excellent - as fine an actor that I usually find Christian Bale to be, Harry Melling steals the show as Poe this go around. It's a really well done film and it has me interested in reading the novel it's based on.

Now a movie that I watched recently that I straight up did not understand is White Noise with Adam Driver, Don Cheadle, and some others. Adam Driver is excellent but I have no clue what that movie was about - I may have been a bit too into my cups to see the point.
Seeing a lot of recommendations for Pale Blue Eye. I’m going to add it to my list.

Love Adam Driver as an actor but I feel like his talents are wasted on a lot of mediocre characters. The only two films I’ve seen him in so far that I liked were Silence (2016), and House of Gucci (2021). Both excellent. House of Gucci was honestly such a pleasant surprise.
