What are you watching & why? (splain)

Re-watched Constantine (2005) a few nights ago. Great film. Excellent cast. I feel like it’s really held up. After watching it I did a little reading and discovered that Nicholas Cage had originally been slated to play the title character. Thank god for small miracles I guess.

Tried to watch Jupiter Ascending (2015) and couldn’t do it. I made it about halfway. Just seemed like a bad movie overall. Plot. Acting. Premise. Everything. Not my cup of tea at all.

Re-watched Ex Machina (2014) yesterday. Great film. I seem to catch new things each time I watch it. At times the music feels like another character. Great cast. Awesome performances. The Swedish actress that plays Ava also had a leading part in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015), a super fun Cold War spy film.

I can't count the # of times I've watched Constantine. I'm not religious but there's something oddly appealing about it to me.

If you haven't heard, Kenau got the go-ahead to shoot Constantine 2 in Sep 2022 and, despite rumours to the contrary, it's apparently still greenlit but no ETA for shooting/release known yet. I hope it gets made.

I agree with all of that. I watched Constantine with my wife at the theater when it came out and recently re-watched it. I think I liked it better the second time around, so much so that I re-watched it again shortly after for my weekly movie night with buddies.

Jupiter Ascending was straight up garbage. Beautiful movie but no amount of stellar effects could overcome how bad it was otherwise.

I remember really enjoying Ex Machina. I should put that on the docket for a re-watch soon.

I've also been watching the revival of "Quantum Leap" -- thru episode 12 of season 1 so far.

Initially it just seemed like a parody of the original series but the new series is coming into its own w/more contemporary topics and I'm liking it more than the original (which seems really dated now). Hope the show lasts at least a few seasons.

I also like there's an Asian male in the lead -- Raymond Lee -- who has only had limited acting experience, which was a risk for the producers of the show.

Raymond Lee reminds me of Randall Park ("Fresh off the Boat") as a "nice, safe Asian guy" without much of an "edge, which is typical of the type of Asian males that seem to be cast these days.

He's no "sex symbol" (even though he's got a white GF, which is also rare) and is no "action hero" but something is better than nothing. 🤷‍♂️

Funny story. Or I guess sad maybe. My mother went to see Constantine in the cinema by herself back when it came out. This was unusual because I can count on one hand the number of times she’s gone to a cinema. She almost never goes to see films. She’s a gentle soul, and she thought the film was a historical epic about Holy Roman Emperor Constantine. I have no idea why she thought that. She’s never owned a television so I guess she’d never seen a preview for it. Anyway within five minutes she realized her mistake and was so uncomfortable she just left the theatre. Of course she never asked for a refund because that’s not who she is. I still feel bad about that. Poor mom. 😭

I’m pretty stoked about the second installment. My wife loves these kind of films so we’re both looking forward to it. Maybe order a pizza and open a bottle.

We've been watching that too...not great but not bad. Wonder if Bakula will make an appearance at some point?

I guess it's a good thing she didn't go to a showing of Caligula.

Bakula was offered the opportunity to reprise his role in the show but passed and wished the new cast luck.

I think that was good of him and the right thing to do. After 5 seasons previously ending 20 yrs ago, the new show needed a fresh start w/ new faces.

So, he probably won't be doing a cameo (as Sam) this season which has alredy been shot but, if the show continues, he still could do so later. Unfortunately, any cameo will have to be sans Dean Stockwell (as Al) who passed away in 2021.

PS: I've watched all 12 (not just 2; typo) of the episodes of the new series and there are reportedly 6 episodes to go (total 18).
