I just watched "Cinderella Man" again for the umpteenth time and I still consider it one of the best boxing movies of all time, right up there with Rocky and The Raging Bull.

The movie tells the true story of James Braddock, a down & out club boxer, who is given the chance of a lifetime and who to goes on to defeat #MaxBaer to become the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World in 1935.

Baer was born in Nebraska but raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and lived for a time in Livermore.

No mention was made of Baer's (half) Jewish heritage in the film but Baer made it an issue by wearing the Star of David on his trunks in a non-championship fight with Max Smelling in 1933, who was reportedly a favorite of Hitler's, who he knocked out in the 10th round. Baer continued to wear the Star of David on his trunks in every match thereafter but it was not shown on Baer's trunks in the film.

Of course, the action in movie was far better than the action in the real fight but if you want to watch that fight, you can see it here:

So was the movie aboutr Braddock or Baer?

Guess no one else saw it. Or cared.

The movie is about Braddock. Baer is only a minor (albeit important) character, who I think was grossly misrepresented, in it

I don't care that it looks like Baer raising his arms the ring in the poster. Why they chose that image, I couldn't tell you.

However, there is no doubt that the movie was about Braddock overcoming the odds and boothstrapping himself out of poverty and anonymity by defeating Baer to become the Boxing's Heavyweight Champion of Word in the midst of the Depression in 1935.

Watched a number of movies over the last couple of weeks. In addition to showing Pitch Black to my son for the first time, we also watched Bullet Train again, as well as Nobody.

I also watched a few that were new to me. The Gentlemen, a Guy Ritchie film, was simply fantastic. Everyone was brilliant in that film and it was a pleasure to watch.

Following the whole "British gangster" theme, I followed that up with Legend, a movie about the real life Kray twins that were active in the '60s. Tom Hardy plays both brothers and does exceptional, well worth a watch!

Departing from the above theme, I finally got around to watching Wakanda Forever. This might be an unpopular opinion but I didn't much care for the first Black Panther - it felt shallow, way too flashy, and they didn't do Killmonger justice at all. I loved the casting but I think it needed way more depth. That said, I really enjoyed the second installment and I felt the tribute to Chadwick Boseman was very heartfelt and touching. I am not really following Marvel much these days, the magic is far past its prime, but sometimes I'll sit down and simply enjoy the movie for what it is and not stress over the details - with that approach, I find that some of these films are a bit more palatable.

Watched In Bruges (2008) yesterday. Pretty fun film! It was bizarre and dark, and took several twists that I didn’t see coming. Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell, and Brendan Gleeson star. Really enjoyed Fiennes performance as the London crime boss…had a lot of Guy Ritchie vibes.

Reminded me a lot of Banshees of Inisherin (2022) that I watched a few weeks ago, also starring Farrell and Gleeson. This one stayed with me for several weeks, it was so depressing and memorable. I think a big part of it was the constant and quietly disturbing music.

'In Bruges' is a great, funny film. It feels like a light-hearted comedy in comparison to "The Banshees of Insherin" (which I also really enjoyed).

I have not seen either yet (they are on the list though). I have read that The Banshees of Inisherin is the spiritual successor to In Bruges - in fact, so much so that a lot of folks thought it was a sequel at first.

I cracked up at the starter pistol scene.😅

Watched Titanic (1997) yesterday while I worked. I think I saw it in the cinema when it first came out. Great piece of filmmaking. It’s an absurd love story though.

Watched The Magnificent Seven (2016) a few days ago. I think I may have seen it before, or parts of it anyway. Fun film. Westerns are a tough genre for me. There aren’t many that I absolutely love. The 3:10 to Yuma (2007) remake remains a favorite of mine, as well as News of the World (2020).
