What are you watching & why? (splain)

Have you seen

Once upon a time in the west
The outlaw Josey wales
Dead man
Little big man
The original magnificent seven
The seven samurai
Unforgiven
Basically any Clint Eastwood movie besides pale rider
I’ll add them to my list! I haven’t seen Once Upon a Time in the West, Dead Man, or Little Big Man.

It’s just a tough genre for me in general. I grew up with Tyrone Power, Richard Burton, Clark Gable, Peter O’Toole, Basil Rathbone, Omar Sharif, and Errol Flynn, Olivia De Havilland, Audrey Hepburn, etc, and while I love most dramas, heists, psychological thrillers, historical epics, biblical epics, and swashbucklers, it’s always seemed to me that Westerns were popular at a time when filmmaking wasn’t necessarily at it’s very best, and I have a tough time with a lot of them. The good ones are very good though! I really appreciate the suggestions, because so many good ones fly under my radar. I’m not always looking out for them.

I'd submit "Open Range" if I may add to the list of some classics above.

("Deserve's got nothing to do with it.")
I’ll check that one out too. Robert Duval is always solid. Lonesome Dove was a trip.

Duvall is great in "Open Range". It's one of those movies, like "Tombstone" or "The Godfather" which has many memorable lines.

"Tombstone" should also be on the list. Val Kilmer's best role, imho. He was also very good in "Thunderheart". (A latter day western of sorts.)

Took my son to see John Wick 4 in the theater. This one is close to 3 hours and they didn't start it until 28 minutes after 'showtime', but who's counting.
Reasonably entertaining, my son liked it. The grappling/close quarters shooting is no longer surprising. Not much for story or characters, but it delivers roughly what I expected.

I just watched "Avatar: Way of Water" (AWOW) at the theater and really liked it. I saw it in 3D which made it marginally more interesting.

The plan actually was to watch "John Wick 4" but I couldn't get the seat I wanted and I chose to watch AWOW instead, which turned out to be a fanastic decision because I was the ONLY person in the auditorium. So, I got an entirely private viewing of the movie. :)

The movie was very engaging and the 3 hours went by really fast. Fortunately, I didn't have to leave for a pee break but my pee streamed afterward seemed endless. I wasn't conciously "hold it" but obviously I did. LOL! 🤣

The story twists were great and often unexpected. The nods to the Titanic were obvious but still enjoyable to watch. The CGI was 1st rate. The bad guys, of course were the evil Sky People and the good guys, the Navi people, were able to prevail (for now) but the sequel to Avatar 3 has already been set in motion.

After watching it, I'm surprised that it did not win for Best Picture at the Oscars this year. I've now seen 8 of the 10 movies that were on that list and, even though EEAAO was the favorite, I liked AWOW better.

Can't wait to get it on DVD from Netflix so I can copy and add it to my DVD collection. ;)

Pity JC never got the change in FPS (frames per second) he was hoping for.

IIRC, in an interview for Avatar, he mentioned that 3D would be much better at higher frame rates, and he was hoping that the industry would be at 48fps to 60fps before Avatar II.

The Thanator scene in the first Avatar was a blurry mess, due to sticking with an archaic, century old 24fps standard based on antique equipment and processes ☹️

*** Hmmm... just looked it up; Apparently some theaters that advertise HFR are indeed showing TWOW at 48fps, but for some reason, despite being shot at 48fps, the movie doesn't use 48fps throughout, instead, switching back and forth between 24fps and 48fps, and according to a reviewer, for no discernible reason at times (eg. It's NOT simply 24fps when there's no fast movements, 48fps for action. They mentioned that there's a scene where Neytiri hugs one child in 48fps, then it switches to 24fps when she hugs 2 other children) 🤨
