What are you watching & why? (splain)

The Last Kingdom.
Saxons and Danes, sword fights, deceit, loyalty, death and love, I mean come on, what more do you need.

I've seen the first season and enjoyed it for the most part. I'd like to read the books at some point.

I just wish that Uhtred wasn't so "pretty" and his sword irritates the crap out of me, especially the way he carries it. "Let's showcase a brilliant historical saga but let's also ruin it by giving our main guy a Dungeons and Dragons sword and have him carry it on his back like he was frolicking with hobbits and fairies in a sword and sorcery flick."

Kids and I started Yellowstone. Yes, we were holdouts and we recently got Peacock for the Chiefs game. Not too bad for entertainment. Can't say that's how all my MT neighbors act, though! 😁
I liked Sheridan's show Tulsa King a lot more. Yellowstone was a little too soap opera for me at times.

Watching the korean series kingdom again on netflix

Just because I liked it that much!!!!
Really great show. Too bad it looks like there isn't going to be another season.

Have you guys watched the prequel movie yet? Kingdom: Ashin of the North?
It was really good too.
It was a great tie in to series and sets up a really good storyline. That's why I'm sad that the chances of a season 3 are getting worse as time goes by.

Unrelated, but I'm also going to give another shout out to Blue Eye Samurai. Go watch it already!

I mean count your blessings I suppose. It could have been a Guy Ritchie series starring Charlie Hunnam. (I still would have watched it)

Just started watching The English. 2022. Western. Set in 1890. Seems like a great production so far, two episodes in.

That film... Barring David Bekham (🤨),that movie had an excellent cast and watching some footage of Charlie's workout regimens to get in that kind of shape was a bit awe-inspiring. That all said, it was not a good film, despite its entertaining moments.

I liked The English. It's different as far as Westerns go but it was well acted and some of the production shots are pretty stunning. I don't know that I would watch it again (unlike Deadwood, Hell on Wheels, and Godless and others - all of which I've watched multiple times). I will say that The English is way better than the Billy the Kid series. Started out fine and then I got super bored with the angsty takes and overly drawn out dramatic moments.

I think thats the thing. The westerns I like most are oddballs that don’t fit the typical recipe. All the ones I grew up with seemed so cheesy-but there have been a bunch of great ones in recent years and I need to get busy. I think it’s kind of a tough genre in general. I don’t bat an eye when I’m watching implausible sci-fi but I tend to hold westerns to a different standard for some reason.

He was darn good in "The Highwaymen" too.
Love that movie.

The English was really good. I really liked "king Arthur legend of the sword" though. Maybe take what I say with a grain of salt 🧂

Yup! Guilty pleasure! I loved Legend of the Sword. But I tend like Guy Ritchie films generally. Snatch, and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels are classics. Guy Ritchie’s Robin Hood was fun as well. But there have been a lot of good Robin Hood films over the years. The 1938 and 2010 versions are my favorite.

I like Guy Ritchie films as well. Speaking of which, have you seen The Gentlemen yet? Charlie Hunnam, Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, etc. It's a lot of fun.

As an aside, I did enjoy Robin Hood with Russel Crowe. The different take on the story, the casting, and the sets were fun and well done. It was almost ruined for me when skinny kids in rags are taking out experienced, well-equipped soldiers in the end though. My suspension of disbelief can only stretch so far. 😁

I haven’t even heard of The Gentleman. Thank you! I’ll try and watch that next week.

Lol. Skinny kids in rags. It’s true. I guess they’ve got to make it clear who the underdogs are. “And I would have got away with it too-if it hadn’t been for those meddling kids!”

Legend of the Sword was such a weird movie. Pretty straightforward Arthur story and out of nowhere it turns into a Final Fantasy world where the character gets to level 99 and unleashes a Limit Break®.
Lol. They sold me so hard I didn’t even think about it. For some reason I don’t mind when fantasy films do it because it’s just magic. When Marvel films do the same thing with science/magic I roll my eyes. Like how did they know that would happen? Based on what?

I did really enjoy Dungeons & Dragons the other day. 2023. Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodríguez. It’s a fun, comedic heist film with magic and trickery.

Currently watching The Boys (again). Butcher / Karl Urban is spot on. Big comic nerd from late 80s-00, and this is exactly what I’d always wanted. R rated psychological break downs and struggles of “super heroes” both professionally and personal lives.

And The Gentleman is amazingly done. Guy Ritchie flair mated with an Incredible performance by Matthew McConaughey…..well pretty much everyone involved. That made for a film I’ve watched several times and still just as caught up in it as the first watch.
