What are you watching & why? (splain)

Netflix / Beverly Hills Cop - Axel F

Let me save you the trouble. Skip it. Only made it about 45 minutes, and only because of the 100% recycled soundtrack (Neutron Dance, The Heat Is On, and all the rest). But about 30 minutes in you realize you are watching a 100% recycled movie - plot lines, jokes, characters, etc. Ok - fine, but when I also realized even the filming style with cringe-worthy, campy car chases is dredged up from the 90s, I couldn’t take any more. I tapped out.

I just watched "The BeeKeeper" (2024) 3x's over the past couple of days on Prime Video because I liked it & because it was "free" & I didn't want to bother looking for anything else to watch.🤷

Any of you fellas seen Horizon yet? Kevin Costner's new flick? I am a big fan of Open Range and his Hatfields & McCoys miniseries. I've been looking forward to Horizon for awhile now but the reviews have been less than kind and I wonder if it has more to do with shorter attention spans and an underappreciated niche genre rather than any meaningful criticism.

I just saw Horizon Ch. 1, pretty good with amazing cinematography.

The only thing that annoys me is it starts in 1859 and everyone is loading their revolvers with metallic cartridges when they should be using cap and ball. A little irritating for a Colt percussion revolver fan.

Looking forward to the next two chapters to bring all the stories and characters together.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, that detail would annoy me too. I always enjoy film that pays attention to material culture details like that and though I know that cap and ball is a pain in the ass (personal experience as well), it's always a delight to see it portrayed in cinema.

Still, I'll look forward to seeing it and I hope that Costner will be able to continue his story in more films.

At our house it’s common for me to simply say, “That’s not how they do it” when some dumb error like this is happening on screen. I just get up and walk out. Since my wife and daughter control 95% of what is watched at our house, that’s about all I can contribute.

You can almost hear the eye rolls from both of them.

I've been unable to finish movies if it gets too bad, particularly if it's a genre that I care about - like Westerns. I started a movie called Hickok awhile back. Couldn't abide it. They were literally "shooting" their revolvers without pulling the hammers back. Another one was The Harder They Fall. Such a hot mess.

I never used to be that way with books, but nowadays I don't waste time if they don't make the grade in a reasonable amount of time.

There's a decent cop show called "Blue Lights" on BritBox about young officers in Belfast. It's sort of like Hill Street Blues meets Red Rock.

When I was watching the first episode I wasn't sure, but I've finished the two available seasons and I have to say I like the show and the characters.
(There are nits, but they're tolerable within the context of the show.)

Also, watching the latest season of "The Responder" with Martin Freeman. A British cop show. Freeman is channeling Oldman and Hardy in his ability to be the acting version of a Swiss Army Knife.

Time is precious. It really is. I don't think of myself as an old man quite yet but my patience for wasted time wears thinner and thinner as I age.

I like Martin Freeman. I'll look that show up.

The Boys is pretty entertaining, looking forward to the next and final season
I enjoyed the finale but not much of the current season. It was kind of a slog for me.

I watched the documentary Wild, Wild Space on HBO last night, pretty interesting stuff. It's about 3 small companies working on rocket/satellite tech and the ups and downs of the industry. I recommend it to get an idea of how important satellites are and how quickly the field is moving.
