What are you watching & why? (splain)

Understandable. Definitely not an incredibly deep storyline!! 😁
I found the whole 'Assassin's Guild/Underground World' bit, quite entertaining (granted; A gold coin for some of those things, seems to be quite expensive for some things, and inexpensive for others).

Overall though, 2-4 were mostly just popcorn action-fare. As is the case with most of that genre, a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief is a prerequisite (Oh, you guys have bulletproof suits. Sweet. You guys must never have played paintball/airsoft/simunitions training, cuz apparently no one in the JW universe ever gets hit in the hand that's holding up the bulletproof coat 😂).

My wife has been trying to get me to watch The Thornbirds miniseries for many years now - it was a childhood favorite of hers. I read the book when I was younger but I didn’t have much interest in seeing the series.

I finally caved and we’re two episodes in. It’s a bit soapy but it’s fun to see Richard Chamberlain, Christopher Plummer, and Rachel Ward in their somewhat younger days.

I can only imagine how awesome that was. I saw Wardruna at Red Rocks a few years ago - that is one special place.
In the early 2000's I saw Blues Traveler and the Wallflowers at Red Rocks on the 4th of July. Watching John Popper play the Star Spangled Banner on his harmonica while fireworks were going off all over the Denver area, plus being surrounded by all of that natural beauty was amazing.... Agreed, special place! 🇺🇲

Here are a couple of examples where the material culture presented was so BAD that I couldn't continue.

I tried to fire up Black Sails again the other night when I was bored. I couldn't do it. It's terrible. I understand it's fiction but even Walt Disney's old Treasure Island did a better job and that was made in 1950!

So I pivoted to Vikings Valhalla and watched the trailer. Again, I saw enough to get discouraged so I turned off the TV and read instead. I don't understand why costume designers can't consult with proper experts. Outlander is another show that made for a great opportunity to display accurate 18th century Highland dress and they straight up ignored the material culture experts and did their romance novel cover crap instead.

Have you seen Taboo? I enjoyed it and it seems pretty accurate except for some overarching plot points.

Watching Olympic Track and Field. The announcers couldn't believe what they were seeing from the Canadian hammer thrower. He grew up on the island not far from Lorien Lorien . He has little obvious muscle mass even while throwing. Looks like a dude you'd see buying beer at the grocery store. He was super calm and relaxed in contrast to all the other competitors, yet he blew everyone away by 4 meters.

man, that kid LOOKS like he's from Nanaimo, lol! He might not be as chunky as the others, but he's 6'5"!

We been watching Shogun, which was filmed on Vancouver Is and it's pretty sick. So many swords, so many fabulous outfits..

Couldn’t agree more.

Tried Black Sails a few years ago and just couldn’t do it. I’ve got no problem though, watching Disney’s 1950 Treasure Island and 1960 Kidnapped every year. I actually re-watch the oldies fairly often. Captain Blood (1935), Prince of Foxes (1949), The Black Rose (1950), Scaramouche (1952), The Robe (1953), etc. Historical epics used to be FUN, and they just told a story. Objectively bad, but fun. I think maybe I get burned-out on the length of some of these new tv shows. They’re just too slow for me.

Enjoyed the first few seasons of Vikings, The Last Kingdom, and Highlander, but eventually fizzled-out on each of them. Probably just my ever-shortening attention span.

I highly suggest watching Edwardian Farm, Victorian Farm, Wartime Farm, Tudor Monastery Farm, Secrets of the Castle, Tales from the Green Valley and Full Steam Ahead.

Truly interesting and educational stuff.

Those are the absolute best! I’ve re-watched them all several times, and the wife too. It’s not often I can get her to watch historical documentaries/living history stuff with me, but she was fascinated by Ruth Goodman. Such fun shows!

Oh and The Townsends! It’s just a YouTube channel, but that’s another that she’ll watch with me. It’s an 18th century American living history/cooking program.

I've rewatched them several times too, they are just all around great programming :) Super comfy stuff compared to the miserable tat being released these days.

I had downloaded them years ago so I was really surprised to see most of them on Amazon! Townsends is good, a little slow for me... but Ruth, Peter, and Alex are fantastic.

As a teen, working at a nursery down the hill from where I grew up, my boss would let me watch some TV on my lunch breaks. As long as there was no golf or Perry Mason on, I could watch whatever I wanted - Beastmaster and Xena were pretty choice options.
Watched a bit of the series, but have you seen the original movie? That's what I'm watching now, and there was just a scene with a FS dagger (totally period incorrect lol), but wasn't able to pause it and get a pic, or rewind it. The remote commands don't seem to work the same for on demand stuff.

The Dead Files - because that's what my paranormal curious wife has on the tube. Sometimes, late at night, after watching an episode ... my friggen minds starts playing tricks on me, or ... is it real? 😆 If only my best friend, my 11 year old english springer spaniel Hunter, wouldn't act spooked at the same time my minds starts wiggin' out ... I might just ignore it.
