What are you watching & why? (splain)

Tried to watch the second season of "Hidden Assets" on Acorn last night but it was awful.

The first season was quite good and actually followed sensible procedures of an international investigation into narcotics smuggling and money laundering...and cooperating with a foreign LE agency. (The season wraps the story well, so it's worth the watch.)

Second season...don't bother. They changed the lead character, the acting was wooden, and the steps taken in the first episode was ludicrous. What a difference a season makes.

My wife and I watched the Gunpowder mini-series last night. It was dark and depressing but provided a nice glimpse into a little known piece of English history. It focuses on the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, during the reign of James Stuart I, a Protestant king with a largely Protestant and hawkish court. Due to the persecution of Catholics and those who were suspected of harboring and abetting them, among other political woes, a number of young fellows decided to attempt a little regicide.

Despite some liberties taken here and there (I suspect for storytelling purposes) it was a fairly accurate retelling, as far as cinema goes. It's grim though. We, as a species, are capable of immense barbarism and it's a bit sobering to remember that.

Took my son to the new Deadpool and Wolverine movie, but neither of us enjoyed it. I was bored and agitated by 2/3 of the way through. The schtick from the first one where a happy classic pop song plays over a bloody battle was repeated about 5 more times and got tiring for me. The jokes weren't great. Most people in the theater seemed to enjoy it though...

I loved the original Fall Guy show with Lee Majors and the 6 Million Dollar Man, so maybe I am biased.

The new Fall Guy movie was not terrible, and I enjoyed the nostalgia and respect paid to the original. The plot was basically taken from one of the TV shows in terms of depth and plot twists.

The actors were not great and neither main characters seemed like good choices for the roles, but the movie was fun. They did water down the theme song by using a new version sung by Blake Shelton (which is terrible compared to the original theme song which was sung by Lee Majors).

I feel the same about the new Beverly Hills Cop movie Axel F. and also the latest Bad Boys flick with Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Hollywood is out of ideas so the just keep making the same stuff over and over.

I enjoyed Axel F much more than the new Bad Boys….. Will Smith just seems like a weirdo and Martin Lawrence is on autopilot (and I was a fan of the Martin Lawrence Show way back when).

The latest season 11 of Alone on the history channel is pretty good.

You can teach someone a lot with an inner tube and a banana, but that seems like it’s own thread.

My family enjoyed it. I’m easily entertained though. The throwbacks to many of the movies that were part of my young adulthood made it all the more fun.

Something for everyone, I suppose. Even the poorly educated.

Just finished watching the opening ceremonies for the Olympics. We had it recorded and watched it this evening. That was quite the spectacle! Nice to see all the excitement.

I think a singular highlight for me was watching Gojira’s performance. It was pretty epic.

Yes, not a knock on anyone who liked it, I'm sure I'm the odd one out here. I've seen various superhero movies over the years, but they are not my genre. The studios make a lot of them because they are so profitable, but I resent that a little since it seems to come at the expense of making fewer "real" movies.

Watched Christopher Robin the other day. Predictable and fun. Not usually a huge fan of “wife and children of overworked father feel ignored” plots, but it was well done, and real cute overall.

Watched Young Woman and the Sea a few days ago. Inspiring period film. Based on the true story of Gertrude Caroline Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926. I actually really enjoyed it. Would recommend.

Started watching the 2010 BBC television series Sherlock. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Pretty good so far.

My Son and I are finally getting around to watching John Wick 4. He's wanted to finish the series off for awhile! Cool fight scenes! Haven't finished it, I fell asleep! Must be a sign of getting old, when every movie turns into a 2 or 3 part mini series!! 😆
I barely made it through the first one, then fizzled-out in the first fifteen minutes of 2. Just not my cup of prune juice.
