  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

What are you watching & why? (splain)

Watched the new 4K release of Happy Gilmore. The kids had never watched it and they laughed quite a bit.

I was waiting to revisit the movie again before watching Happy Gilmore 2. Some funny bits, but what a mess of a movie. Not the sequel that I was hoping for, but I can't say I'm surprised.

Watching Suite Francaise on amazon prime atm, which made me look up how long germany occupied France. I was surprised to learn it was for 4 years.

It's an interesting thought, france vs germany. All those sacrifices and dead people, only to read sobering statistics about immigration like this - https://rairfoundation.com/frances-immigration-crisis-nation-brink-as-2024-figures/

Strange days we're in, where invasions are re-worded and the government themselves are complicit in usurping the will and freedoms of their own people. France, UK, Canada, Germany... strange days indeed.

I lived in San Francisco for about six months from the summer of 1976 to early 1977. I belonged to a gym where several guys boxed, and we used to go to the naval base on Treasure Island to watch amateur fights some of them would take part in.

I couldn't understand why some of these guys were calling me "Rocky" until one day I finally asked and it was because the movie had recently come out and they thought I talked like Stallone did. (I never thought so...but, whatever.)

Memory just popped up when reading the posts just above.

Here's a flashback for you (sorry about the feet).

Now that man could fight, and I was a big fan. We ran into him once at Miami Int'l Airport.

Funny story regarding, (in a roundabout way), Duran.

In the later 70's when I was training in Shotokan at a dojo nearby, I belonged to a gym called the Viking Health Club on Queens Blvd.

One evening after working out and hitting the showers, I was at a sink alongside another member who was cleaning up. He was a small man, but in excellent shape.

I'm looking at the guy and thinking, "I know this guy from somewhere" but couldn't place him.

All of a sudden I turn to him and go "You're Esteban De Jesus!"

He was so happy that I recognized him that it really made his day. De Jesus was the first man to ever defeat Duran in the ring. (Though he lost the rematch later on.) He only had a few more years to live, unfortunately. Was a very sad story.

The Fall Guy

Because Heather Thomas… 😍

Well, I'm not the kind to kiss and tell, But I've been seen with Farrah.
I've never been with anything less than a nine, so fine.
I've been on fire with Sally Field, gone fast with a girl named Bo.
But somehow they just don't end up as mine...
It's a death-defying life I lead, I'll take my chances.
I've died for a living in the movies and tv.
But the hardest thing I'll ever do is watch my leading ladies,
Kiss some other guy while I'm bandaging my knee.

I might fall from a tall building, I might roll a brand-new car,
'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that made Redford such a star.

I've never spent much time in school, but I taught ladies plenty.
It's true I hire my body out for pay, hey hey!
I've gotten burned over Cheryl Tiegs, blown up over Rachel Welch
But when I wind up in the hay, it's only hay, hey hey!
I might jump an open drawbridge, or Tarzan from a vine,
'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman, that makes Eastwood look so fine.

(End of TV theme, but still one more verse below)

They'll never make me president, but I got the best first ladies
Someday´s I got´em as far as the eye can see - ouee
A morning dove with Jacky Smith, a crash in the night with Cheryl
But in the end they never stay with me
On my fall from the Tower Building, so Burt Reynolds don't get hurt
I might leap the mighty Canyon, so he can kiss and flirt
Well, that smooth talker's kissing my girl - I'm just kissing dirt
Yes, I'm the lonely stuntman, that made a lover out of Burt

I watched a video about the rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1600 and stumbled into this set of lectures and interviews by/with Dr. Sarah Paine, a professor of history and strategy at the US Naval War College:

I have zero military experience and will likely have zero involvement with US foreign policy during my life. But, these lectures are absolutely fascinating and are well worth the time for anyone interested in world history. Ms. Dr. Paine takes a deep dive into the historical, social, economic and military context affecting world events, and does so from the perspective of each participant.

If you're interested in history, I highly recommend the above playlist.
