What are you watching & why? (splain)

You have kids in diapers? From your handle I would have figured you for a grandfather at the least.

I would yell at them to get off my lawn, but then they'd just cause a ruckus in my house.

You can either read it as Old Man Willy, or old-man willy (in which case he might need some pills).

You will note that I do have homemade children.

Back on topic: I watched a few episodes of the Sopranos last week. I really like the horse, Pie-Oh-My, and hope she brings Tony lots of joy.

Absolutely loved the Sopranos but Breaking Bad was my favorite ever.

I was about to comment that Breaking Bad could compete, but I think BB was on a foundation built by The Sopranos: a relatable anti-hero whom you really want to succeed but hate the cost of their success. That said, I still love BB and Better Call Saul. They're all great.

At some point I didn’t even really know how to compare any other shows to
The Sopranos and The Wire.
But then I just explained it to myself like this: they’re simply phenomena, not really “just” TV series or anything like that.
It feels like way too much soul was poured into them.

This doesn’t sound like it is uplifting toward the Sicilian people. Negativity toward the “mob” seems the same as making derogatory comments about other groups.

They do address this in the show, repeatedly. It is a recurring theme that, as much as the mob-connected people view themselves as proud patriots, they are apart from the rest of the Italian-Americans. Plus, most of the main characters appear to be Neapolitan, not Sicilian.

My grandfather was from Palermo, and all of my wife's people are from Sicily. We've been there and visited family there. We loved the Sopranos.

What I didn't and don't love are real mobsters in real life, whom I've had the pleasure of investigating, as well as knowing , and attending family functions alongside of. I made it pretty clear which side I was on when sharing meat space with them, except for when I was working UC early in my career. They thought I was the "black sheep".

Most Italians and Sicilians have nothing to do with these people and they certainly aren't representative of the culture...any more than any other criminal enterprise is representative of any other culture or ethnicity...whether it's Irish, Jamaican, Serbian, Chinese, Japanese, (by way of just a few examples), or outlaw motorcycle clubs (whom I also investigated).

What's funny about the Sopranos is what makes the Progressive insurance commercials about not becoming your parents, funny. It's how true some of the (ignorant or clueless) behavior is.

But, there are certainly folks who feel that such shows reflect poorly on Italians in general, (like one, but not the other, of my sisters-in-law), just most folks I know don't happen to feel that way.
