What are you watching & why? (splain)

I saw your post this morning and was wondering what the hell you were talking about, just so happens we were at the episode tonight where we find out it's Saul Goodman 🤣

Being Red

An 8th grade shapeshifter sells herself to attend a concert while being tormented by her Asian tiger mom in this latest Disney romp.

A line from a Being Red review that made me laugh:

"The movie harbors no belief that Ming has a right to her own expectations about Mei’s conduct, no sympathy for the idea that perhaps Mei has a responsibility to her mother just as her mother has a responsibility to her. Mei wants to live the life that Mei wants to live, and as far as the movie is concerned that is the only issue of concern. That other people exist is not Mei’s problem."

Just finished watching Spielberg's 2021 version of "The West Side Story" on DVD.

A pretty good remake of the movie which remains close to the original in terms of the scenes/dialog w/only some minor script/staging changes and new choreography The movie is primarily driven by the music/lyrics of Bernstein/Sondheim which is largely unchanged w/minimal rearrangements.

The key difference between the 2 is that the actors in the new version are actually doing their own singing -- not so the original -- but that really doesn't matter to me. It was an entertaining movie but, after watching it, I'm not surprised that it did not win many awards at the Oscars this year.

Won't go into detail in discussing all the pros/cons of the new film from my POV and I won't begrudge the award for Best Supporting Actress won by Ariana DeBose for her performance as Anita because I have not seen all of the nominated performances yet.

Suffice it to say that I still prefer the original firm by a wide margin.

Thanks for the review. I love a good musical, and I'm a huge fan of the original. Yeah, they dubbed (most of) the vocals. Hello? They had Marni Nixon! (Fun fact: she was the mother of 1970s album rock artist, Andrew Gold).

I have been meaning to watch the remake just for the hell of it. But I can't think of too many remakes which were as good as or better than the orignal. The 1944 Hollywood remake of "Gaslight" was definitely better than the original 1940 British version. Hitchcock's second version of "The Man Who Knew Too Much" with Jimmy Stewart was better than his first with Peter Lorre. I liked the remake of "Ocean's Eleven" better than the original. I think the remake of "3:10 to Yuma" was pretty close to the original, and the same for "True Grit," "The Thomas Crown Affair," and "Total Recall." I don't count "The Maltese Falcon" because no one has seen the original. Remake of "Taking of Pelham 123" wasn't bad, IMO, but not as good as the original. Can't think of too many other good remakes. Neither "King Kong" - although the latest one was miles better than the Jessica Lange abomination from the 1970s. And finally, I liked Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope much better than when they remade it as Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens. :p

I can't get into musicals. The cringe causes me extensional anguish.

I was the same way until I watched a recording of the og stage version of Into The Woods. I still don’t really love musicals, but I “get” them now. Into the Woods is really great. The 2nd half is just amazing. Bernadette Peters rocked in it, too. Still the only muscial actor/actress I ever remember.

On a side note, anyone here seen the new Cats? It is the most accidentally horrific anything I have ever seen and I own a copy of Salo. It’s just impossible to tell what tone it’s trying to accomplish. Is it ironic? Is it serious? Lighthearted? Are we watching the apocalypse? It’s so disturbing.

Edit: no wait. I also remember that John Travolta is in grease.

I just kept thinking "baby driver" when me and the wife watched it

I have both versions of Cats on film - 1998 and 2019. Haven't watched either for awhile. The 1st was a theatrical adapatation. The latter was made strictly for film. Will watch them again and get back to you on what I think about the later version.

Not sure why musicals would cause anyone to "cringe."

Most are based on some great music, like "West Side Story" (and any of the Oscar & Hammerstein musicals) that even a blind person could enjoy just listening to the music (and what dialog there is). But to each his/her own.

I enjoy musicals but I like a lot of other types of movies, as well, spanning the range from action, comedy, spy, suspense, drama, romance, animated, disaster, monster, horror, chase, war, western, gangster and superhero films among others.

I haven't counted recently but my DVD (as well as VHS) collection of film is quite extensive and there are very few movies of any note that I do not own.

Ok, here's a dirty little secret of mine.

I really like JLo in the 10 silly & implausible romantic comedies that she has played a role in and seems so well suited for.

Wedding Planner
Maid In Manhattan
Gigli
Jersey Girl
Shall We Dance? (Japanese remake)
Monster-In-Law
Back Up Plan
What To Expect When You're Expecting
Second Act
Marry Me

And despite that fact that she's primarily a singer, she has a pretty extensive of other (equally B rated) films to her credit. See: Jennifer Lopez's Filmography

"Marry Me" was 1st released for theathers & streaming on the Peacock Channel and then was released on DVD this year. It's a musical romantic comedy that I'm sure will make Nathan "cringe" if he dared watch it. LOL! ;)

I 1st watched it on Peacock and just rewatched it on DVD but, as ridiulous and implausible as it is, it works for me, even w/Owen Wilson (who also seem to have the habit of making romantic oomedies) was the "ordinary guy" male lead together w/the essential child character to add the "aw" & cute factor to the film.

It's definitely a "chick flick" but enjoyed it and, even if you don't, I'm sure that your wife or GF will which may provide some "fringe benefits" if you watch it with her. :)
