What are you watching & why? (splain)

1) How is it possible to give awards for movies that so few people have seen?

Money. I reckon Apple paid a few million dollars to "win".

Watching "Severance" which is weird, slow, but quite intriguing. About a business that requires workers to have an implant to "sever" their outside self from their work self. It's a cool concept.

"From" which had an excellent start, but slowed down significantly with last week's episode. It's fantasy/horror. I'm hooked, of they can keep the tempo up. I'd recommend the 1st episode to try.

"Modern Family" as background noise.

"The Walking Dead" just to see how they end it. I assume there is new writers as the content is much better than before. Neat to see the Female Lead (Lauren Cohen) "fall from grace" and turn absolutely ruthless.

Watched Dune (2021) and the original Dune (1984) last night because Dune (2021) won 6 Oscars this year for sound, film editing, original score, production design, cinematography and visual effects.

So, the new Dune MUST have been an AV marvel right? Well, I've got a 6 way surround sound system w/a subwoofer and center channel plus a 60" flat screen that I only sit about 6 feet from and I'm not so sure.

FWIW, I still like the original Dune better but the new Dune helped give background for the old Dune. That's weird but that's what it did for me.

Not doubt the new Dune has unrivaled CGI and technical achievements but the old Dune (as dated/kitcshy as it is/was) is just more entertaining. The new Dune also is only Part 1 of at least a 2 Part series. So, it's unfinished as yet.

Interestingly, the dialog/plot of the new Dune closely followed (with a few exceptions) the old Dune as far as it went. It will be interesting to see how they finish the series w/the new Dune Part 2.

I prefer the old Dune, the bad guys were scary and it was all gross and confusing. The new one has a lot of pageantry but disappointed me. And as a knife fan I was pissed that nobody bothered to find cool knives for this new really expensive movie that takes place in this knife-only universe.

Currently watching Young Wallender on Netflix. It is a young version of Detective Wallender, which was a series of Swedish detective novels turned into a good TV series. This is a trend where they take a successful show, like Morse or The Big Bang Theory, and do "pre" versions, like Endeavor (Morse) and Young Sheldon (Big Bang). Anyway, Wallender is good.

We also watched Witcher, which is great.

Oh, I'm thinking of going into celebrity promotions. I've reached out to Will Smith and Chris Rock's agents about participating in a celebrity boxing match with the money going to treat Alopecia, Jada's baldness disease. I haven't heard back yet. Maybe I should stick to knife collecting.

laughing my ass off watching Jimmy Diresta's Netflix show

Moon Knight. Not my favorite Marvel character and Oscar Isaac is mosdef not my favorite actor. Stiil . . . might get it a shot.

But is it any good? Did you like it or not? And why?
I liked it and I can be harsh if a live action misses the point of the comic. The first episode had very limited CGI and the jump cuts between Steven Grant and the other personality(s) was well done.

But I go into these shows expecting to be entertained by a mix of violence and black humor and not expecting some sort of world changing experience.

Thanks!

Hmm. Definitely not looking for a world changing experience in comic movie like this (or, really, any movie). And I like black humor, too - but not necessarily entertained by violence. Not necessarily a turn off either - although it has been in a few movies. If it's organic to the story, and not just for sadism or shock value, that's fine. Like I enjoyed "Sin City" and "Deadpool" and "Pulp Fiction" even though I think they were graphically violent, but I would say I enjoyed them despite that, not because of it. And I draw the line at graphic violence toward children and animals - a major turn-off for me. I just can't recall ever going to a movie and thinking, "I hope there is a lot of good violence here!" LOL.

Anyway . . . maybe I'll grab a bottle of bourbon and give it a shot tonight.

So I gave it a shot. Not impressed, to say the least. I dunno . . . I never thought of being deranged as a super power, and that is pretty much all they showed in Ep 1. There HAD to be a better, faster, more engaging way to introduce this multiple personality character to us than by spending almost the entire first episode showing nothing but the weakest, most pathetic, and least interesting of those personalities.

I'm going to give it a second episode a shot, hoping that they are now done with THAT, and will get on to the business of the more interesting personalities and what makes him Moon Knight. Otherwise . . . I'm outta here.

Just watched "All The Old Knives" -- the spy/suspense flick which is really more a love story than a spy movie -- that aired for the 1st time on Prime Video last night.

There are no "knives" of the metal variety involved in the show but I liked it.

Of course, opinions will differ and the few reviews that I read (after the fact) about the movie were not impressed with it; pointing to plot gaps, a too easy to guess "who done it" and its slow pace.

I wasn't bothered by those things because I found the performance of Pine and Newton (the "stars") compelling and because I found myself "caring" about the characters and why things between them didn't work out which were explained in the process and made the tragedy of their separation and how the movie ended more compelling to me. It was easy to guess "who done it" but not "why" it was done which was the "hook" for me.

On the other hand, you could easily find fault w/the film and dismiss it. It just depends on your POV but I think it's worth a look if you have access to it via Prime Video. Then you can decide for yourself.

Gave the second episode a shot. I did not find it to be all that great, but I did like it a whole lot more than the first. That upward trajectory is the only reason I'm gonna watch episode three. With similar improvement, by the sixth episode this could be a really good show. The bad part is . . . they only made six episodes. Doh!

Thanks for that post! I was gonna give it a watch last night, but a long day of mulching followed by a two-and-a-half-hour-plus client teleconference from hell had me too physically and mentally exhausted, and I zonked out 😴 by 9:30 like my grandpa used to do 😞. I'm going to try again tonight, but I'm just about to head out for a bunch more yardwork, so who knows? Getting old sucks.

Just took a 2nd look at "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" on DVD because Jessica Chastian plays Tammy and won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance.

Have to say that I really didn't realize that Chastain -- who is one of my favorite female actresses among the current crop of actresses -- was playing Tammy until I heard about her nomination and only gave the DVD as cursory glance the 1st time around.

The role is SO out of character for her when you consider her performances in "Zero Dark 30", "The 355" and "Miss Sloane" in which she plays a straight ahead, "in your face", very smart, hard edged woman taking on the men and beating them at their game.

Tammy is also very smart but (who like a lot of people - not just women - from the South) plays off not being so smart as a strategy to get what she wants but in a more around about way and, given how this role stretches her and how she executes it, I think that she probably deserved the Oscar for her performance.

So, if you haven't watched it yet or dismissed it out of hand (as I did when I 1st saw it on my DVD list), give it a look to decide if you think she deserved the Oscar or not.

So I made it awake to watch this tonight. It was "OK" for me. The whodunit aspect was a lot less interesting than the why. I think there was one "plot hole" if you wanna call it that which bothered me. I'm generally not a huge fan of a lot of switching back and forth between time periods, but maybe that was inevitable here. What I really didn't like were the too many and too lengthy "romantic" scenes. But as you astutely pointed out, it really is more a love story than a spy movie. And I really did not need to see Chris Pine's nekked butt . . . 😂. Maybe that appealed to the ladies?

If you're expecting Bourne or Bond, you will be sadly disappointed. If you're expecting Tom Clancy, still disappointed. but maybe a little less so. If you're expecting Le Carre, even less disappointed. But if you're expecting some kind of cross between "The Good Shepherd" and "Atonement," you might be pleased.

I give it a 6 out of 10.
