What are you watching & why? (splain)

I prefer "traditional" boxing when I can find it on cable for free, which is becoming more an more difficult these days, and I'm not fond of MMA because so much time seems to be spent wrestling on the ground which I find boring.

Kickboxing is closer to traditional boxing which also offers a martial arts twist and I recently started watching Glory Kickboxing on Pluto which I get for free via Prime but just realized that the fights they are showing are at least 2-3 years old.

So, I was looking for some more current fights on YouTube and found this one between 2 BIG Heavyweights (around 260# each) -- Rico Verhoeven v. Jamal Ben Saddik -- from late last year.

This is the 3rd fight between these 2 guys -- Verhoeven won the 1st 2 -- and is Verhoeven's 10th defense of his HW Championship on Glory. Verhoeven won this one 2 but w/o sustaining significant damage. Don't think he was ever dropped before this bout. So, that streak has ended but . . .

It's a great 10 min fight! Just don't watch if you can't stand the sight of blood. ;)

I am watching Yellowstone and I don’t get why it is popular, the plots are weak, many of the characters actions do not make sense, there are murders that happen that don’t make sense, it’s just not very good.

I was hoping for more Dances with Wolves and less Dallas.

1883 the prelude to YS is much, much better.

just finished watching Irresistible, we thought it was great. Really dug into what's going on without giving anyone the shaft

Thought both shows sucked. Especially, Yellowstone.

Could only make it past a couple episodes of Yellowstone, and maybe three or four of the prequel.

I can see how you could come to that conclusion! As for me, I had never watched YS but was curious what all the hubbub was about. Thinking that it was a Paramount production and at first not knowing the background story to the eff-up that led to up to Paramount giving away streaming rights to Peacock, I opted for Paramount+ because I also wanted to see what the Picard thingie was about (2nd season more meh than the first for me). Therefore, I watched 1883 before I even delved into YS and found it quite enjoyable despite some still fantastical whoppers in the script. I dunno, I guess that I just like westward pioneer themed genre...

Coming to YS, I made it through the 1st season and since I had already paid for the $9.95 or whatever streaming fees to Peacock, I begrudgingly binge watched and I was no better off for it. I dunno how the sequel to 1883 and the other prequel to YS, namely 19xx (forgot the year) with Harrison Ford will pan out, but I think that I'll still watch it if Paramount carries it because I am also semi curious about the 3rd season of Picard.

I like western themed books and films, and have owned, read and watched a boatload. That said, everyone's taste will vary. My B.S. meter will only tolerate so much. So that's on me.

I wish "Lonesome Dove" (and all the other books in the series) could be "new" to me again.

We don't rent pigs.

Ah... that would explain the popularity/hype. The Average Joe seems to LOVE drama.

Haven't watched the show, but aside from seeing the occasional snippet (scenery looks great), what I heard folks discussing didn't interest me very much. Now that you mentioned it, it DOES remind me of the typical 'water cooler' discussions about the latest episode of 'Dallas' 😂

While I have nothing against (well written) drama, I'm not particularly a fan of shows that revolve around it, especially the ones that rely on a constant stream of over the top drama ("ZOMG, did you see what JR did?" 🙄😂).

One of my guilty pleasures, is that I've always liked watching people compete in weird events/competitions/obstacle races. To that end, I tend to watch Survivor, MTV's The Challenge, and Ninja Warrior.

LOVE DVRs, so I can record those shows and fast forward through all the drama BS that I have zero interest in, and just watch the competitions/events 😂.

*** The main reason I prefer the OG Japanese Sasuke to ANJ; The OG show pretty much just showed back to back runs, with the announcers just giving a little background intro to each contestant as they stepped up to the starting line. In contrast, over a 2(?) hour ANJ episode, the total time showing contestants actually making runs, MIGHT be ~20 minutes.... maybe 😕

I tried watching Yellowstone too but it didn't work for me but "1883" was recommended to me and I was better by far.

Drove into SF for a medical appointment and just watched "Easter Sunday" at a movie theater in SF while waiting for rush hour to pass.

It's an unusual film in that it's a mainstream feature about a Filipino family and the sh*t they go thru which isn't all that different that what all of us go thru regardless of our ethnic/racial background.

The movie has been almost universally panned by the critics but I liked it.

FYI, I was the ONLY person in a fairly large theater located in the Marina District on a Friday night. However, the area was mobbed with "millenials" and other young people eating/drinking at bars & restaurants just down the street. Guess this wasn't "their" kind of movie. LOL! ;)

The movie WAS a little rough around the edges -- kind of a B level production -- but it still entertains if you can get past that. The lead is a 1/2 Filipino/White comic named Jo Koy (who I never knew anything about but who apparently is the BOMB in certain circles -- not just Filipino. He basicially looks/acts White but he's also definitely Filipino as he relates to his film screen mother and tia (auntie) and crazy ass cousin -- who we all can relate to.

So, I recommend the movie where ever you can see it.

PS: Also watching "13 Lives" -- the movie about the 12 Thai kids and their soccer coach -- trapped 4km (about 2.5 miles) in a flooded cave who were safely rescued -- on Prime Video. Still watching it. Review to follow. Vigo Mortensen and Colin Farrel star in the film.

"What We Do In The Shadows"
Happened upon it. It's ridiculous. Wife and I love it. Our city even gets a shout out in the 3rd episode.
It's about a documentary of 3 vampires in Staten Island. It is significantly funnier than what I anticipated. 4 seasons. 30 min episodes.

 I watch it too, it’s pretty funny. I like Taika Waititi’s work. He directed Jo Jo Rabbit, some of the Thor movies, and some of the Mandalorian episodes. The original What We Do in the Shadows is a 2014 New Zealand mokumentary horror comedy written and directed by Jeanine Clement and Taika Waititi.

I’m going to have to watch Prey now. Predator is my favorite movie and holy crap did the franchise movies get bad (throughout June I watched them all again in order as a refresh), if I could have punched out Adrien Brody through the screen at the very beginning in Predators, I would have, then put him down with his own weapon. His acting attitude, voice, and face all sucked.

Even the Predators would have thanked me for stealing one from them.

As mentioned earlier, been watching mostly documentaries for the past few months. NatGeo. Smithsonian, PBS, Great Courses, etc. History/biography/war, science, art, religion etc. The kind of stuff that would have made Newton Minnow proud.

Most recent was "Hemingway." Why? All the experts say he was a great writer, maybe the most "important" American writer of the 20th century. I've never understood it. Same with James Joyce. I've tried and tried, but I cannot ever make it straight through "Ulysses." Hemingway and Joyce both seem self-indulgent to me. Like a lot of "modern" writers (e.g., Salinger and Vonnegut), and some "modern" film makers (e.g., Kubrick and Malick). Maybe you had to be there? Or maybe I'm just not bright enough to see the genius. Anyway, I hoped that maybe this documentary would enlighten me. It didn't.

Still, I liked "Hemingway" the documentary better than I've ever liked Hemingway the writer. It's a Ken Burns / PBS joint, in three two-hour parts, so if you've seen his other documentaries then you know what to expect. I've enjoyed most (not all) of his documentaries, and really only hated a couple (I'm looking at you, "Baseball"). This one is pretty standard for his work . . . overall I'd give it a 7/10. I think it gave a good sense of who Hemingway was, what he believed, and how he lived his life. And Lord knows it's chock-a-block full of other "eminent" writers and literary critics effusively discussing his writing. However the genius still eludes me.

I'll come back later and list all these documentaries I've been watching and give them each a simple 0-10 rating, but it's way too much to give a real meaningful review of them all.
