What BIG folder do you really like?

The Lone Wolf Harsey T3. A big folder from a big man . . .

Found a Cuda Maxx on Ebay so I jumped on it. The Harsey T3 just moved up the list.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

That's an easy one: Spyderco Military (make mine in S30V and peel ply CF please) ;) and the Spyderco Police.
Though not as large as the Military but definitely heftier, the first generation Chinook comes next.

The biggest folder I have right now, is my large Sebbie. It has a 3.625 inch blade.

Hey GUys...

One of my favorite larger folders is my Spyderco Manix..
Maybe not the largest folder out there,, but it's a Tank...

My second large folder is my fully serrated Cold Steel X2...

Everyones input has been great. And having different definitions of what a "larger folder" is, also is fine. But when I started this thread, I mentioned a blade size of over 4". I think any knife with a blade that long is surely a handful, no doubt. But many people carry knives that size and many mentioned, like the Manix, Military, etc. I have in my collection (and they are great).

So far, the ones that fit my original post and that I have purchased since this post started are the Benchmade Ruckus and the Camillus CUDA Maxx. Another couple that are on my list are the Lone Wolf Harsey T3 and the BM Skirmish. All of these knives have a blade longer than 4". The CS 6" Ti-Lite was also mentioned but that knife is just not my style.

I also have a 5" CS Voyager but I don't like the handle much (just feels wierd to me). Also the large CS Gunsite tanto. That one I do like quite a bit, even though quality and pricewise it does not come close to the knives mentioned above. It's still one tough "mother" and, to me, a very good LARGE folder. Sold my SOG Pentagon Elite II (5"). Just got to where I didn't like it. Too much of a "killing machine" look to it. They have a new drop point in the Spec Elite II (5") with the same great locking system I may look into. I remember the old Elite carried pretty well.

Any other quality folders with blades over 4" that people have had direct experience using and carrying? It seems that we may have hit all the really good ones. There isn't a huge market for them.

I'd love to hear some more input about carrying and using the Lone Wolf T3. By the looks (and price) of it, it seems like an awesome folder.

Regards and thanks,
Gary

If you can get away carrying a 4"+ folder, hopefully you can also carry an auto. If so, I can heartily recommend the Pro Tech Brend with a blade length of 4.5". It carrys great, has a great Brend grind, great lock-up and has both a clip and a nylon sheath. I carry mine on a daily basis.

Bladeprince, have you ever handled an Opinel? I mentioned the Opinel #12, it can be had for about 15$ and has a blade a little under 5 inches. I recommend it very much. It has a round handle that is very ergonomic and an efficient blade grind similar to the Rukus but thinner. The carbon steel they use is nice stuff, but a little higher in maintenence than a modern stainless. I'll take a photo of mine next to a Buck 110 for you to give you a size example.

Lined them up at the base of their cutting edge. Note, the #12 normally doesn't come with my "custom serration" pattern. ;)

Thank you for the link and all very interesting.

However, I feel that a knife retails for $250 (the Ruckus), has top grade blade steel (S30V), and made by one of the most respected cutlery companies in the world shouldn't require that much work. And especially shouldn't have "nicks" in the edge, even after sharpening. I feel this knife should have ever gotten out of the door. If new one I get from the dealer is the same, I will either get a promise from Benchade that they will replace the blade and sharpen it properly or I'll get a refund. I've never had any problems with their 154CM knives and S30V is supposed to be a step or two up the "quality" scale.

Others may disagree but for that kind of money for a knife, I expect a quality product right out of the box. I don't think that's asking for too much.

Gary

Are you used to sharpening S30V? It is a challange. That wire edge can be a bitch on this steal.

One thing I have done is sharpen utill the wireedge is formed in both directions then elevate the blade considerably for a few strokes on the stone from both sides. This seems to cut the edge of as opposed to ripping and tearing of the wire edge. Follow with a leather hone/strop.

Make sure to post your impressions when you get the Maxx. My first impression was "Holy **** this thing is HUGE!!!" Then I started noticing the really fine design, and fit & finish.

I have to agree with you Bladeprince on the fact that the Rukus should not be out the door with an improper ht, if that is what it is. For the money it should be ready to go. I know that the Rukus I have came to me with the sharp "hair-popping" edge that BM knives can attain. I'm sure the second one you get will be right on the money as I can't see this being anything but a rare mistake.

Another knife to mention is the MT Socom Elite, automatic or manual as they have a 4.05" blade. The new SOG folders; Socom Elite II with the 5.0" blade. Looks like a hoss to me!

I'm currently carrying my prized possession, a Strider AR, that I got back in the spring. Even though the blade measures 4.0" from tip to handle, the cutting edge is really only about 3.5" and the rest is the big finger choil. Still love it anyway for it's hefty build and solid liner lock lockup. I read somewhere that you can move the clip to the back frame screw and get a deeper carry. Anyone done this? How did you like it? I may give it a try.

CS 5" Voyager clip point
CUDA Maxx
REKAT Sifu Special Edition
REKAT Pocket Hobbit w/sheath

I carry the CS Voyager on once in a while because of its light weight. I like them all. The REKAT's are safe queens as is a REKAT Carnivoure.

I picked up a Sifu by REKAT. Does anyone have information about these knives? It is big and the blade is awesome!

was going to comment on the Opinel's serrations but just now saw your explanation

Was going to ask who made the Sifu. Now I know.

Thanks

Just got my second Ruckus only a few minutes ago. This one is what I would expect from BM. Smooth, polished bevel and razor.

There was definitely something wrong with the first one. The bevel and edge felt like sand paper and dull as a butter knife. I could also run my fingernail alone the edge and feel several chips. Held up to a light, I could even seen them. Maybe others that have had trouble sharpening the Ruckus should actually be returning it to Benchmade. Maybe there was a batch of "bad" S30V that didn't get noticed.

I like the Kevin Wilkins Ryback folding kitchen knife. It's a real beauty. It's on my wanted list:D
