What Buck are you carrying today?

The bolsters on my 1989 703 are rounded like yours. I wish mine still looked like yours! The bolsters on mine are a bit dinged up and have a kind of pitted or sandblasted appearance, and the black has been worn away from the lettering on the shield. (Hmmm... maybe I need to post it in the Traditionals "Pocket Worn" thread. 🤔 )
I carried a 703 for about 6 years in the 1980’s and I had the same experience. When I see one for sale it is more often than not in the condition that you describe. Some of them are even missing the shield.

Thanks for chiming in about your rounded bolsters. I still plan to look at all of my 700’s later today and I will post my findings here.

I have six 700 series knives and I took a look at the bolsters on all six of them. At first it appeared that only my pre-1986 models have sharp corners on the bolsters.

That is, until I looked at my two 703’s. These are both from 1986. The top one is a 3 spring model and the bottom one is a 2 spring. The bolsters on the 3 spring model have sharp corners. The bolsters on the 2 spring model do not.

The 2 spring model is the one that Old Hunter Old Hunter asked about a few posts above. I have no way of knowing if a previous owner smoothed out the bolsters or if it’s simply different employees doing the final buffing.

Railsplitter Railsplitter Thank you for an informative and detailed answer to my question. My only example (two views below) is very much like your second example shown directly above, very squarish, similar to older Buck 110 Folding Hunters. It is a two spring model. OH

And yet another wrinkle......mine on the previous page has script lettering on the tang, but yours doesn't. Maybe it's a year or two newer than mine.
