What Buck are you carrying today?

I caught this 424 and have been wearing it for a few days. Just for fun, I measured the hardness, and it's 60 HRC, although that might not be accurate

I made the dumb (genius) decision to fish from 6 PM to 6 AM last night. Ended up releasing most of the fish and only kept a single whiting for lunch! Caught a firework show on the water too. 118 in D2 for the prep work and a plane jane 110 in the tackle box doing the dirty work (not pictured).

How is Buck’s magnacut? I’m tempted by these custom shop ones but don’t know if it’s worth the extra cash.

Depends - I think it's a massive upgrade over 420 HC in terms of toughness and corrosion resistance. I use a 110 as a saltwater fishing knife so I find it appealing. Also IMO the upfront cost of a 110 these days is like 90 plus. The upgraded steel is certainly worth the extra $50 if it's a user. Honestly if you're getting a custom shop knife you might as well. Only reason not to is if you want mirror polish.

Dr. Larrin Thomas developed Magnacut. Here's his comparison chart, which also includes 420HC and some of Buck's other steels. Magnacut should have higher wear resistance (edge retention) and higher corrosion resistance but lower toughness than 420HC. A lot more excellent detail is available at knifesteelnerds.com (Larrin's site).

Buck has released at least one Magnacut knife with Larrin's name on it, and they did a shared video together on Magnacut, so I assume he's helped them dial in a great heat treatment for the steel just as they have great heat treatment for their other steels.

I got a 112 in Magnacut from the CS as soon as they offered them a couple years ago, and it's been my most carried knife ever since. For me, it has the perfect balance of toughness, and ability to hold an edge.

I've picked up a CS 110 & the anniversary 111 in Magnacut since then. So yeah, if you're really going to use the knife, I definitely think the MC is worth the extra money.

Buck's Magnacut is legit. I'm a huge fan of their Magnacut and S35vn. I'm to the point where I rarely carry any of my 420 or 425m Bucks. Nothing wrong with them, but the edge retention on Buck's premium steels are insane compared to their standard 420.
