What Budget Knife Suprised You?

I recently purchased a SOG Fielder folding knive w/ G10 handles for $19.99. After an initial adjustment to the pivot screw, I'll have to say I've been very happy w/ this knife as a EDC. It's got some nice weight to it, and very smooth action.

What budget knife have you been suprised by, and why? Would you purchase this knife again?

For sake of this discussion, we will define a budget knife as as any knife that you paid less than 50 dollars for, before tax or shipping fees. Oh, you also have to own, or have owned the knife in the past.

For me, it is the discontinued CRKT Prowler. I know the steel is not very good and it's only a liner lock, but it fits my hand and I find that in many ways I prefer it over my Benchmade Griptilian. It is easy to open wearing heavy work gloves.

I go back aways, but one of my old-school affordable favorites is the Buck 110 Hunter. I know it only has a 420HC steel blade, but the ergonomics and utility are still very good. I have worn out (sharpened out) a couple of them in 45 years of construction.

My current EDC is the Spyderco Gayle Bradley. The Buck can't hold a candle to it but it is about twice the price, over $100. Here are a couple of Youtube videos about the 110 and the GB that you might enjoy watching.

Another vote for Mora Companions (especially the HD) and I have to say the older Cold Steel Voyagers (new are probably okay too...just never owned one). I had a small Voyager I carried for about 2-3 years, "retired" it, then my wife carried it for a few more years in her purse, retired it AGAIN, and now it's on it's third career as a bag opener in my wife's gardening supplies. It's dirty and rough edged, but still usably sharp and locks tight.

Opinels are what surprised me as I'm a fan of hardcore, tactical folders... ;):D

I never realized how a simple, time tested design (and cheap as heck!) knife could give me so much enjoyment in use. I have two of em in my desk at work and they both see daily use for food prep. Plus, they're awesome fun to modify as well.:thumbup::thumbup::D

Everyone should at least try out a mid sized Opi to really understand how good they really are; the quintessential knife if you will.

Not real keen on the style or cosmetics but for the price the Opinels cant be beat, if your going to put it to work.

Belt carry, Buck 110 or 112.

EDC Spyderco Tenacious

JMO

SAKs. The Victorinox Recruit comes to mind if looking for just one.
Opinel #8.
Mora No. 1.

All are extremely good value.

Another for me is the Mora 2000; it's crazy how nice of a knife this is overall for the price.:thumbup::thumbup:

Not my pic but for reference:

Kershaw "Shallot"

Would have never really purchased one but received it with a lot of knives I purchase off another member.

The "Tungsten DLC Black Coating" is very smooth to clip-in and remove from pocket. Flips solid.

Nice little knife to throw in your pocket for a trip to the store. Pleasantly surprised at how much i like it.

Gotta go with the Schrade SCHF9. Good steel, good design, and good ergos. Can't go wrong with it as a first survival knife at 35.00

Was a frost 30 yrs ago , looked at spyderco hated them bought only knife in store that felt ok. Stupid thing kept a razor sharp edge for years till I lost it in the lake.

Schrade sch 301 and 304 are the only ones that have made the starting line up when others have just passed through

I bought an Opinel, Morakniv, and a RAT1 after reading these types of posts. None disappointed.

I'll throw something different out there. As a newer knife nut... I'm trying to experience different designs, materials, etc. I bought a Kershaw-Emerson CQC-7K. I wasn't sure if I would like the wave feature. For $35 I was very happy with it.

Mora companion
Cold steel Pendleton light hunter
Lone wolf landslide.

I have a whole bunch that would qualify for your price range. But there is only one that stands out. The buck 110. It is the knife of knives. It makes other knives bow down to it. It creates an aura around it. It makes a shadow 5 times bigger than its actual size. It shakes the earth as you open it. Your unborn grandchildren already know you will hand it down to them. Elk drop dead at the sight of it and skin themselves.

Anyway you get my point is a freaking fantastic knife.

I bought a TAC-FORCE speedster model 440 stainless...abd the only problem was lost track of the blade in another pair of jeans and washed and dried the blade. Once realized that my knife was most likely melted....

I was surprised that it was disassembled in the cycle's process and I tired too reassemble and failed...M I S E R A B L Y😅

Kershaw tremor is by far my best for buck it's a 20$ zero tolerance. And then the case sodbuster it was about 35$ and the cv steel is fantastic fit and finish was on point

.....the tremor is a large, well built assisted flipper built tough enough to serve as a hunting knife.....I bought both smooth and the serrated....I also agree the $14 Mora companion is a screaming purchase value.........
