What Budget Knife Suprised You?

Kershaw Stobe = best value folder of 2014. (my personal review)

French Optinel and Swedish Mora are the best ever for the money (less than 20 bucks) based on my knowledge.

My #1 EDC is a green alox Cadet. Slim enough to fit in watch pocket w/o hindering main pocket access.
Spear Blade, cap lifter with screwdriver tip that also serves as mini-pry bar for can lids. Haven't used
the can opener due to modern pulloff tops but the small screwdriver tip has been handy enough times
it's wearing down. The nail file is quite handy no pun intended. Often use it to open an envelope or
break tape rather than gum up the blade. Did you know if the wind blows the door shut while you have
the knob removed the Sak nail file fits that lil square latch hole(diagonally) to easily reopen the door?
Emergency door knob, won't find that in the catalog I bet ya. If I start the day with a different knife
in my pocket it's for certain I'll be needing a Cadet utensil by lunch. Figured I just might as well start
with it and it's real seldom I need to go fetch something else. If so, it's usually a hammer not a cutter.
SAK Cadet.....don't leave home without it. Glad I already have a spare don't think they still make a greenie.

Another vote for the Rat-1. I bought one, carried it for 2 days, and immediately bought 10 more. The pink one is the wifey's, and she loves it too!

Other knives that suprised me were these traditional Rough Riders. Both the ones from the "Arowhead Series" and the "StoneWorx Series" have outstanding F&F for the price. The steel is only 440 but not to bad heattreated for EDC-use.

GANZO!!!!! Man do these blades rock! For the price they smack all oversea made blades I've seen for budget friendly stuff.

An AWESOME new knife for under 30.00 is the SOG "Salute MINI" check this knife out its a nice user for about 28.00

Opinels are what surprised me as I'm a fan of hardcore, tactical folders... ;):D

I never realized how a simple, time tested design (and cheap as heck!) knife could give me so much enjoyment in use. I have two of em in my desk at work and they both see daily use for food prep. Plus, they're awesome fun to modify as well.:thumbup::thumbup::D

Everyone should at least try out a mid sized Opi to really understand how good they really are; the quintessential knife if you will.

What Opinel would you recommend I get as a first try? I've eyeballed them but just like you I'm all about modern folders.

I just picked up a Cadet myself. Only carried it a couple of times but it looks like it will be one that I keep. If I could only get a Soldier to open with the same amount of effort, I would be very happy. The Cadet is so much nicer. Or maybe I just got a very good one.

5 years ago, I bought a CRKT Ryan Model 7 non-serrated folding knife. I bought it because I just liked the style. I have carried this knife everyday since I bought it, it is my "Work Knife", I have literally tortured this knife, I have scraped pipe, I have used it as a pry bar, I have locked the blade in place using the Lawks system, and beat it on the spine and butt with a hammer, I have even chipped concrete with it. I have sharpened this knife countless times, to the point it no longer has the original profile.
Now... I have many knives. When not stateside, I carry two fixed blade customs made with Micarta handles to fit my hand, and with Blades designed by me for specific tasks, and two folders, one a Strider, and the other a medford Knife and tool. At times, my life has depended on these knives, and they have served me well. However, as a work knife, I honestly believe, deepdown in my heart, that the Ryan Model 7 is THEE best knife I have ever owned...
Through all the abuse, the blade has never chipped, the Lawks system has never failed, and to this day, it will shave...

I paid $18.99 for it, shipped to the door, off of ebay.

Flat out BEST knife I have ever owned.

I snagged a Kershaw Cryo for $27 a while back. Great little knife until I lost it. Even though I have much more expensive knives now, I still get the urge to buy one when I pass it in the store. I guess the fact that I got mine for so cheap is the only thing holding me back from dropping the $40 or so to replace it.
