What did you rehang today?

Got this NWT Co. No.19 Little Giant combination axe/bush hook hung. It has an eye distortion that I was only able to partially iron out and driving the wedge is a pain without some kind of hydraulic press because that big ol' rhino horn of a hook gets in the way. The hang was secure enough with just a wooden wedge to keep the head from coming off in use, but it would pivot a little thanks to the eye distortion, so I had to spike the gaps from the distortion to fill them in and used three hand forged steel wedges in increasing size until I finally had it tight enough to keep it from shifting. Now that it's hung, though, it's a great user.

I have 3 of these, and never found out much about them or who made them. Do you know if there were other companies that made these, or are they exclusive? Where should I look for a stamp, I have cleaned one on the wire wheel and found no marks.

FortyTwoBlades, you've posted this several times in the past and I always kind of wondered if you would hang it.

Any chance of a picture of what you did to the eye to keep the Rhino in check? :)

Not to be ignorant but I know the extended piece is obviously sharpened but is the edge towards us in the picture as well? Maybe it's the photo but it kind of looks like two distinct tools.

The inside of the curve is sharpened, and the straight part facing us is sharpened up until where the curve starts.

havent done much today, i just swapped an older junky handle on my ax-eye to a good one, but i'll have 3 more shortly, and one may be a flint edge

They were exclusively made by the North Wayne Tool Co. of Oakland, ME. Most have no marks, as they had a paper label originally. This one has "Patent Applied For" on it.

Thank you sir, gave it a new lease on life. I beleive someone burned out the handle and ruined the temper in it. Im glad to report it works like a charm!

See there is a reason to pick up any old axe head even if the temper is ruined, little heat treatment and it comes back alive!

I found myself in need of a maul, luckily I have a pile of heads and a pile of handles. This 8lb Warren-Teed is strictly a user.

Nice looking job on the 8# Warren! I prefer the 6# mauls for most of my firewood, but I also have a couple 8# and a 10# Skookum for the "tuff stuff".
I try not to have to split stuff that would require me to keep an anvil next to the woodpile......

With a Warren you know it's gonna be a tough son of a gun. And I think 8 lbs is a great choice for a maul. It's a nice step up from your 5 pound axe.

I like those double bit axe eye mauls better than the sledge eye mauls. I think I've got one laying around in my "to hang" pile.

I like 6lb just fine for speed and control, but I had two of those handles and a head that required one so it was destiny lol.

i just re hung a few axes but i've got one more coming, i'll let you know when i fix a warped eye, and how i do it
i'll give pictures of all 3

Hello my american axe enthusiasts...

finally i did it ... i got my first american axe. A vintage Beauty, a Kelly double bit. TRUE TEMPER Kelly Perfect.

So far, I had a few swedish and german axes that i collect - and actually use - but no american axes so far. I am thrilled by the Kelly!
I believe it is aMichigan pattern ... but am not 100% sure about this... comments?

Here is a review:

ah, well, I had only ONE Hickory handle left, so today i hung not the Kelly double bit, but instead an old HultsBruks.

The Kelly will get a new handle soon. Can not wait to chop with that Beauty.

Cheers from good ol' Europe,
Erik

you'll love that axe, as long as you give it the proper grinds it'll chop like a gransfors, and yes, that is a michigan and it's in fantastic shape

LOL. That is a 265lb Hill anvil that I brought home on Saturday. I haven't grabbed anyone yet to help me lift it up onto a stump.
