What did you rehang today?

Nice job! I found a plumb just like this the other weekend. I wasn't sure what style haft to hang it on. I may just make one like this. I love how it looks. You know any of the history of this axe?

Here's a pic of the one I found.

Here's an adze that was given to me a while back. Handle was very dry and checked and blade was dull, probably from being used as a grub hoe. Handle had shrunk so much that handle pulled half way through the head so I tried cross wedging for the first time and it seems to have done the trick. Thanks for looking, SW.

Nice job.

A couple things. First, that's a grub hoe. You can tell by the width. Second, were it an adze you'd want some room in the eye front to back. An adze need to be tuned to present the blade to the work properly. This is done with a shim placed either in the front or back of the eye as required to tune the tool.

Here is an example of an adze tuned with a shim.

Thanks Square_peg, that's good information. Had no idea about the wedge adjustment, makes sense though. It was made by Esco corp. so I assumed it was an adze...it's now a grub hoe with a real tight handle😂

Hard to find these critters in Canada, but manged to round up two recently. This is the last one I finished.

Fixed up my Norlund today. I was able to salvage the handle that came with it. All things considering it came out pretty good, better than I thought it would considering the shape of the handle when I finally got the head removed. I should've taken photos of the removal.

Yes, it came out much nicer than expected. I sanded it down and put a couple coats of Tru-oil on it. At the top of the handle where the wedge fits it splintered really bad. I had to fit the head further down on the handle due to this and cut down further for the wedge. It was a lot of elbow grease, but it was worth it.

This is my yard sale find from last weekend. It is a Kelly Flint Edge weighing 5 lb. I believe this is Kentucky pattern? Handle is a House Handle octagonal.
This is the first single bit I have ever hung. How did I do?

You did a very nice job on this. That head looks to have been very well cared for, which is a real prize. By the 1950s there weren't a lot of different axe patterns still in production and I suspect that TT-Kelly would have marketed this as a Jersey. But I do stand to be corrected, the resemblance to a Kentucky is there.

"This is my yard sale find from last weekend".

That's a nice looking setup. That a TT axe head looks good enough to be new old stock! Very nice!

I would consider this to be a Jersey.

I used this as a reference. I however am new to this.

I'd say that's definitely a common TT Flint edge Jersey, and I'd call that first one a Kentucky as I can't see why they'd bother making a different head pattern just to call it a jersey.

That Kentucky is a real sweet one, and I'd say you did a great job hanging it.
