What did you rehang today?

re-hung my pickaroon, Pulaski and got a new 36" handle for my double bit Zenith axe.

and un-hung my black prince boys axe due to a cracked handle.

Rehandled an old Plumb boys axe. I left some of the red paint on because I like the look. The handle was stained and had a coat of BLO applied to it.

My old Hicks that I was working on today wanted to get in on the pictures so I let them join.

Anyone know what the significance is of this one having USA under the Plumb stamp? Most don't. Must be a certain time frame that they included it.

The re-hangs have gotten so good lately. It's fun to see them all.

Sashae, love your Plumb! ChrisR, if that's your first then you're a natural. Really well done and from the pile behind you it looks like you know how to use one.

DH, great trio with the pickaroon, pulaski and DB. You found handles with perfect grain for the two axes. Sorry about your Black Prince handle. It's a perfect example of why grain matters.

Vaughan 4# axe and Beall and Co. 10# sledge.

I thinned the handle down, but still need to cut down the swell some.

And from a week or so ago, 2-1/2# plumb on a 33" haft.

Good spotting about non-ideal woodgrain orientation on the Black Prince handle. Pretty obvious illustration of wood failure because of that.

I hung this huge head that I got at a garage sale on an old bts handle that the previous Vaughan was thouroughly nailed upon.*

I hung it open so it might actually have a use. Don't laugh... said use being chopping small stuff thats on the ground. It actually worked pretty well on a gangly eucalyptus limb that was long dead.

Fwiw, it ended up at 28"..

Several of us have hung light heads on long handles and liked the result. It sure beats a heavy head on a short handle.

Not today, but a few days ago i have rehanged my vintage dbl bit Collins axe. A swamping pattern.

For the helve guards i used 2 leather portions cut out of a antique Polish military strap. They're attached with a few small nails on each side. To shape the straps a bit to match the helve curves, i sokaed it in water and then nailed it to the helve. Secondly, i wrapped tightly the whole helve portion so that the straps are forced to take the shape of the curves they're attached to.

Since there are no double bit axe handles in Poland for sale, i've adapted a pickaxe handle for this axe. Unfortunately i had to fill up the eye with 2 small wedges so that it doesnt loosen up.
You can see one on the left and one on the right.

Plumb 1942 Military hatchet head, just a fresh edge, cleaned up the mushrooming and installed haft. Also a project head, Plumb Anchor broad hatchet, hanging it on a piece of old broken double bit handle. Cleaned up the wood patina to even out the fresh wood. Eye and bit are not aligned so it looks very "off" at the hang but edge is in line. Still working on relieving for my index finger but REALLY liking the feel so far.

I hung these two this week. 3 1/2 pound no names so I got them cheap. Nice full heads and bits, almost no mushrooming. I put the rafting pattern on a 36" straight handle and the Dayton on a 36" curved. They are going in my shed at my hunting camp. I'm going to use them for mostly splitting firewood and alternate to see if I develop a favorite.

Sadly today was not as much of a success as I would have liked. This is my first time attempting to re-hang on an older, cut-down handle and it unfortunately didn't end well. I got the haft cut down properly, wedged it (with a too-small wedge) and decided to cross-wedge it with a metal wedge -- at which point, the haft split on both sides. The haft was very dry, and I hadn't spent any time re-oiling it with linseed prior to re-hanging with it, which I believe was my downfall.

For folks that have re-used hafts before, do you heavily oil it to bring it back before doing so, or are there other techniques at work? The head in question was a small Norlund Voyager tomahawk on a cut-down 17" haft -- roughly equivalent size and heft to a Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. It swings well and the head has been stable, but I'm going to reattempt next week on another old haft.

Sashae,
I hate to see that happen to you. I did not soak mine but have not cut the kerf or wedged it yet. I have a few more to do this way and will soak the ends in oil first and report back if I get any splits. I am rehafting a Coiuncil that dried so bad the wedge FELL out when I picked it up and I am really soaking that one.

Did something a little different today.
I set a trash can on fire last year at work, so I thought I could make a home for this little axe:D
It is a Warren, 3 3/4lb. It on a boys handle that I made into a octagon. The head was a odd size, A little to small for a boys and to big for a hatchet. In an old Warren catalog they state that these are made for trucks and buses.
If some one knows of a company that makes hard ware to mount this on a wall and lock it please let me know.
