Still too thick? I filed that edge for a couple of hours. I don’t use a gauge, but perhaps should.Curt Hal , the cheeks on your ax (post 5217) are thick. Hang looks good. DM
Don't see any photos...Still too thick? I filed that edge for a couple of hours. I don’t use a gauge, but perhaps should.
Oh i see. I thought you had filed it again since that photo. That would be fine for splitting, but for falling it ought to be thinned out a tad more. You'll have a much easier time. I haven't purchased a gauge yet. I don't know how many dozens of axes I've filed but after awhile you just get the "hang" of it.
I don't have a gauge either so I used some of my other axes to compare it with. It does take hours of filing to remove enoughStill too thick? I filed that edge for a couple of hours. I don’t use a gauge, but perhaps should.
Love the handleIt's an East German head, close to a Yankee pattern I'd say. Here's a better picture and some of the whole axe.

Thanks, I spent quite a bit of time working the swell to fit my hand and be comfortable swinging for a long time. I wanted this axe to be sort of a template for future handles so I have something to go off of.I like the shape you put on the swell of the straight handle - something to stop your fingers up front and relaxed on the back to try to avoid a hot spot![]()
Hard to say. When I got the head it was in very good condition and the poll had basically no wear. Not sure if that is because it wasn't used much or because it is hardened. I've only ever struck the poll with a wooden mallet, but I don't see any obvious forging line. Some good photos. Nice ax. Do you think the poll is heat treated? DM
Gorgeous... Just Awesome!2 lbs Gambles Artisan. 25” vintage “Perry” handle. I’ve tried to find info on the handle maker with no luck. Had to repair a crack in the swell but otherwise the handle was in great shape

Thanks, Fmont. Much appreciated. Back into the vice it goes.Red is traced where you're at, blue is where a flat ~20° is. It's your photo I just altered it a bit so I could more easily see the outline. Hope it helps.

I broke the handle on this Council during fire season, wedging this tree. I've got lots of similar fallers axes, so I grabbed another one and put it on the bench.

Put a new stick on it today, 28". As well as retouched the edge and Cleaned up the poll.
That's my kind of fitting. After seeing how it fit here, I just drove it on there tight, never touched a rasp to it.

Put a new pin in, cleaned up the poll, reset the bevel a little, and a couple coats of danish oil.
