What did you rehang today?

First thing this morning I broke the handle out of my baby peen and had to stop what I was doing to make another one 😩

I just used a piece of hard maple and locust for the wedge. I’m not very picky 😂

Did you have any problems fitting the lugs to the handle while hafting? I have a Jersey pattern axe head and YouTube isn't very helpful in pointing out any challenges -- maybe because there are none! But I thought I'd ask you. Thanks for any guidance you could provide.
it's actually not terribly complicated, you'll see a log of guys cut reliefs for the ears, but it's not a terrible issue. Instead what usually happens is you take a spoke shave or rasp and just take down the shoulder on the side until it's a smooth plane. If you look on some of the old handles, they swell a little, but the only shoulder they have is on the spine of the handle under the poll.

funny thing though, I finished that ax about 2 years ago and mailed it to a friend in texas, who promptly busted the handle.
this is what it looked like as the handle was done. it had been sitting so long that the head needed another go around.

again not my cleanest work, but it wasnt a particularly nice head either

I tried to rehang an 8 pound splitting maul today. I wound up doing everything wrong, now I have to start over from the very beginning again.

Currently in the sort of mood where I have to resist the urge to throw out all the spare handles I have, and never touch rehanging again.

i do rehang a lot of axes and hatchets from flea market , on home made shafts. but today i did not rehang much but i repaired my unmarked hudson bay in a brutal but efficient way. eye was rounded by former owner using it mostly as a hammer, i hafted it like that but since a while it was wobbling , so this morning i left the haft seated and with a big hammer and the help of a sturdy concrete wall as an anvil, i blew a few strikes on it and it made it back to a more oval shape like it should be and haft seems to be ok and tight, then...

The figure is only one element so that alone will not tell much about the handle strength. At most I'd say it does not help on that account but you have the aesthetics for compensation plus it is a smaller axe. vidmate.app saveinsta

The Russian shovel that I keep strapped to my minibike needed a new handle.
The original one was terrible and of a very crappy soft wood, it didn't fit well , and because it was a little loose one of the chintzy little screws broke.

Part of the issue was that large rivet head on the inside that prevents a proper fit.

These aren't particularly strong in the first place but I don't think I have made it any weaker, I cut the overlap off the socket and squeezed it in tighter.
Instead of just relying on a couple cheap little wood screws I riveted it all the way through.
If they had done that it could have been made like a regular shovel not needing the overlap and rivet.

When I bought this I figured the real deal had to be better than the Cold steel replica, but these aren't actually that great and by all accounts the cold steel is apparently much higher quality than the originals.

Very nice! good job. It's great when you can rehang on the original handle.
Thank you and yes always!
Better when i can just tighten and or in some cases leave alone completely when they are the original factory hang or perhaps just a very well and aged hang.

Either way i enjoy preservation and conservation depending on the tool and how it has come to me when time for resurrecting.

Thanks again!

There's another bang-up job. These all look great.
Thanks so much!
I thought about re-rehanging this one due to the wedge breaking apart on the last mallet blow.
After choosing the wrong saw to cut it flush, it went squirrelly.
I love it tho! The rough look i do go for more than the fine and finish.
Admittedly i do always strive for fine and finish 😎🪓😂🍻
