What do Real Military Men/Women Carry

jayharley, it appears to me that you are the agressor here. I reread brownshoe's first post, and yours. When a man comes up to me and says "are you picking a fight?", I figure "he" is the one picking the fight. In his first post Brownshoe mentioned Strider, Cold Steel, Benchmade, Emerson, Camillus, Kabar, Gerber, SAK, and Schrade but you only see Strider! Yes, Brownshoe has shown his disdain for Striders in the past but I don't know how he could have phrased his honest question any more innocently. How about giving the guy a break, maybe he'll change? He'll never stop being a strider combatant when there is always someone out there to do combat with.

...but now that you mention it, there are plenty of high quality combat knives available that are more "asthetically pleasing", in fact I've carried a few!

Bruce

What? Don't shoot the messenger. I just quoted what Brownshoe said. Very simply and very directly. Also, I don't care if Brownshoe "changes" or not. Who cares. My life is not going to change if he likes Strider knives or not. I just get a bit upset when someone says something and then acts like they did not say it.

As far as someone being aggressive and starting a fight: What are you rambling on about? Anyway, I am done with this thread. Yawn....

Brownshoe,

I disagree with your premise. You are not studying military hardware. In fact, you are studying the civilian replacement technology for failed military hardware.

Case being, Mick Strider may have in fact been a soldier, but his knife company is based on a need he saw for improvment of military hardware. That is, seeing damage or breakage, he went on to invent products without the same weakness.

It's an old story. The guy who founded Detonics firearms was an old 'spook' still in-country when the French were still there. He carried two Colt 1911's just in case one had a stoppage. He is quoted as saying, "If I ever get out of here, I'm going to invent a pistol that never jams!"

He did. I had a stainless .45 ACP Detonics that digested every brand, load, and bullet design known at that time. It fired wet, it fired un-lubed, it fired with a limp wrist, it fired with a 'fruit salad' of dissimilar loads in the same magazine and it fire upside down. After +6,000 rounds, I sold it. Oh, it was still running, I was just getting bored.

"Oh, by the way....

I did some IP tracking, and it turns out that Spartan_Ajax & Gary Swenson have something in common. Matching IP addresses.

Isn't that interesting? I mean, if they are two different people, why would both of them log in using the same IP addresses, especially when one appears to be a college, and one would appear to be home.

Heck, the home address seems to have several user names attached to it, most of which are banned:
* Gary Swenson'
* GS06077
* jb2003
* Leathal Edge
* MercMAN
* spartan_ajax
* specLO
* swenson45
and many many more.

But what I find the most interesting is that in this post: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...threadid=274094
in which he says he got an AR from Matt D.

So, if that's the case, someone covered their tracks poorly.

Nice try at misdirection though.

Oh yes, before I forget - OWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDD"

Ohhhhhhh....
Smacked down hard!
Thats gotta hurt!
Way to go Spark!

Are you saying Brownshoe is involved in this IP address thing?:confused:

My friends in the forces mostly use the issue bayonet and MOD survival knife or Golock.

Rarely a Gerber Multitool or similar.

Even my Royal Marine Friends would baulk at the prices at some of the knives *I OWN*

For example my Randall model 1 and 2, Sebenza, Alan Wood custom, Farid custom etc etc etc. I could talk about my Microtech's or MOD's blades, but that is moot.

Most soldiers simply do not need the fancy blades we desire... We play they are in the real deal. Rarely will many soldiers spend such amounts on blades that us collectors and weekend warriers use! That is as near a direct quote from my Royal Marine friends

SGT 19D20 (CAVALRY SCOUT)
Current carry- M10 bayonet on trouser belt , Swiss Tool, plastic Devil Dart, CRKT M16 or Kasper.
SFOR carry- Issued M9 bayonet(in bottom of duffle) M7 bayonet on LBV, Peltonen M95 or Fallkniven H1 in front pocket, plastic dart, Swiss Tool, CKRT Kasper.
Desert Storm carry- M7 bayonet on leg, leatherman, Bucklite, Glock Field Knife on pro mask carrier, Camillus U.S. (from demo bag)

Other carries- Simonich Raven, Fallkniven A1, ColdSteel REcon Bowie and Peacekeeper, Modified Kabar, Camillus M3... . I prefer to carry a bayonet so I hope the M10 holds up, but if it doesnt I'll stick with the Raven or the M7.

One I'll get eventually Strider KH.

Of all of the above the only knives I've been issued are the M9,M7, and the Camillus folder. As for whether or not Joe carries customs, some do most don't but they sure as hell want to "borrow that for a minute".

My brother carried a Livesay 82nd Airborne (1095 model) that I sent him when he was in the Marines. Yes, he caught hell for the name of the knife until he let a few others use it. The 7" blade is considered "about perfect" for fighter (the USMC Kabar is has a 7" blade), but the angle (and thickness) of the blade makes a much better chopper than the Kabar. He kept the tip pointy enough for opening cans but he said it really excelled for building improvised shelters. I picked his up used for $75.00 at a gun show in Indiana.

Thanks for the responses. Any military women carry knives. The one I know doesn't.

When I was an Airborne 31C I carried:
Leatherman: most used
SAK: 2nd most used
Pilot Survival Knife leg strapped: There is something about the steel used in this knife that just refuses to sharpen. Didn't know better. A true POS.

But I agree with many here that most military personnel do not know much about knives or steel or care. The weapons kill. The knives open up MREs and fix things at the motorpool. If you buy expensive things for your web-gear they will probably be G2'd and sold at the local pawnshop for beer money. Things get stomped, dropped, lost, stolen, broken, buried, left behind, ran over, permanently gerry-rigged etc. The only thing non-disposable was you and your weapon.

I am not active duty currently but I did my time.

We got issued the m-7 (I believe) bayonet. It was crap I have seen them bend and break rather easily if used as a camp knife. All they are good for stabbing your buddies (accidently) and bad guys too I guess. Oh and we had those folding etools they were wonderful (heavy sarcasm).

What did I buy/use? It was a long time ago but I know I had Swiss army knife and a Gerber folder (hunting knife my son has this now), I carried a MKI, and later a MK II for combat knives tied/taped to my duece gear.

I had a nice scary bigass $$$ camp knife eventually. I want to say it was Busse but I am not 100% sure, and I gave that to one of my buddies when I got out. I got more use out of that and my hunting knife than the others.

I personally avoided (what I percieved to be) junk knifes at all costs. Although there was always some idiot with a great big $40 bowie knife.

I saw enlisted guys with really, really nice custom blades over the years too.

Thinking about it I think the Gerbers were kinda pricey back in the day also. I know the MKI was expensive, the MKII seems like it was cheaper, the folder was a $50-$60ish knife not cheap in 1979 on $412 a month . I think I got my first divorce over the Busse in 1983-4.

Overall I carried the best knives, I could find and squeeze the money out for. I know other guys who did too. We kinda had a learning curve, and had to figure out what the best bang for our buck was. Today I would probably be carrying whatever the other NCOs thought was hotshit.

Today there seem to be a LOT more choices.

I am the just the slightest bit insulted when people act like PFCs and Lcpls are not smart enough to buy a good knife. Someone else pointed out all the junior ranks have to do IS spend money unles they are married. A PFC from a working class background probably can afford better toys than his buddies back on the block, if he wants them. And even when I was 18 I knew the last thing I wanted to have was a pos knife.

hey, don't knock the e-tool man. one of the best "field" seats i ever had. put your back against a tree and rest you dogs after a 13-14 click night movement. bury the blade and fold(don't forget to lock) the handle and your good to go. other than that, i'm sure it was good for something, after all we wouldn't be issued useless crap right(ha-ha)

Active duty Air Force for 9 years. I'm not an operator, but am a knife nut and I spent 8 years in the Civil Air Patrol doing ground SAR. I have or do own:
Boker Combat Smatchet
Buck/Phrobis M9 bayonet (circa 1989)
Gerber MkII (pawned it years ago and regretted it ever since)
Cold Steel Recon Tanto (movers stole it)
Gerber Bowie
Gerber Gator
Gerber LST
Spyderco Civilian (carried daily)
Benchmade CQC7 (bought before Mr Emerson started his own production facilities -- I will be buying Emerson products in the future)
Benchmade 9100 Stryker (issued by Uncle Sam)
SOG Paratool (stays in the car)

I can only speak for my son-in-law, an air force pilot. He wears the Arclite necker in D2 from A.G.Russell. Since I gave him this knife, his issued knife resides in his bureau drawer.

Amen brother, anything that small that can carve a 4x6 foot fighting hole(give or take)into the frozen crust of Mt Fuji has my blessing.
I was 0311 89-93 not including IRR. As a grunt I carried the standard issue bayonet. I never used it.
I baught my self the Leatherman Multi tool and have had it since. At the time I had little use for a knife other than GI because of the self confidence provided by the M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon)Slung from my neck.
Now that I no longer hav that I Rely on A Spyderco Police, CRKT M16-14,SOG Pentagon Elite And AS Always My leatherman.

I was in the Navy 1975-'79. USS White Plains, USS Kirk. Homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. Rate BM3
No knives issued. I used a Buck 110 and a locally made 6" fixed blade.

Corps 69-71
There were no knives to pick from like we have today.

Carried the K-bar issued to me, still have that knife today. Lots of funky stuff on it that can't be scrubbed off, though it sits for the last 11 years or so since I've had better choices, it will perform what I ask of it like it did so many years ago.

God bless the servicemen and women who have followed in my footsteps and continue forward today in all the strange out of the way places of the world keepign the ideals of freedom alive and well.

As to Striders being ugly and expensive--make em uglier than they are now for all I care, they perform admirably in their intended role. Maybe their being ugly is what makes them so tough. You usually get what you pay for in life, my SnG is always on me even if I am carrying several at the same time. It's there for a reason. It's lightweight, strong, and dependable. Keep em coming Mick. Semper Fi

There is hope yet

Ooooh Ahhh Jarheads!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay sharp

All that I knew about during my past life was a K-Bar, e-tool and a Swiss Army Knife. I'm sick over that. And to think that I was near Oceanside for much of that time.

Oceanside!!, Oceanside??

Where were you stationed at Pendleton?

I did schools battalion there before heading overseas, then came back to Las Pulgas [ spelling? ] until transferred to 29 stumps to muster out a few months later.

Got to train disembarkments at DelMar for beach assaults a few times off the ships as well. Oh, the memories of it all.

Brownie

I was at Ranges 213/214 right across from Camp Horno. Went right through Las Pulgas everyday. We did less before 9AM than most do all day, but we were good at it. You should have seen what went on overseas - maybe you shouldn't. Nevermind.

**** if Striders are tough and ugly now I know why I had to have my TAC GB. One of those terms describes me and it ain't tough. My buddies say I look like Shrek. At least he got some.
