What do Real Military Men/Women Carry

I don't know what military folks buy, but if a particular mititary person is a knife knut, he will more than likely know about Strider, Mad Dog and others and make a choice accordingly. I would also guess that this type of individual would really enjoy his use of the knife and also keep an eye on it, keep it in good condtion, using it hard or not, so that it's around when he needs it.

had a leatherman for DTD chores and a Randall #1 for the knife fight that never came.
Saved my pennies for a awhile and bought a used one in great shape.
I agree with the previous poster that most quality knives do well in the hands of troops that buy them. I spent a lot of dough on that Randall and I took care of it. (got a lot of razzing from my buddies though, they thought it was a waste of beer money!)

In the Army during the 60s it was just issue bayonet and K-Bar (not even sure if it was a Camillus or Ontario or whatever). Later after I took a commission in the Navy I had a Camillus folder with a boatswain's spike (copfish owns that one now -:) ). There was also the metal handled Camillus multi-folder. Later I bought a Buck 110 at NEX (maybe '72 or '73 when they first were produced). Also picked up a mid-upper range Swiss Military job. But it wasn't until just before the Gulf war in '91 that I got a "special" knife. Had an Ek M-5 bowie customized by the Ek Custom Shop in Richmond VA.

Other folks I knew over the years had special diving knives or "sterile" combat knives either locally issued or individually bought. The EDO boys have Mission Ti blades issued to them. A CMSgt I know has an issue Benchmade 9050 auto (I bought mine).

My son is a corpsman with the Marine Scout-Snipers. He was given a full house MadDog ATAK and an Emerson folder by the late Walt "Doc" Welch. (I had an pygmy ATAK I didn't like which Doc bought from me ironically.) This when Doc found the Spyderco Moran (original flavor) with a custom kydex multi-carry sheath I gave my son to be a bit short of his own vision -:) My son still has all of these although the big ATAK is required to be left in the armory.

I'm retired now and have a good number of knives including some tacticals from a number of well known makers and firms. What would I take with me now were I to go into harms way? Depends on the mission. It's great to know there are so many great choices out there -:)

Retired "mustang" naval officer.

I'm not military (used to work for the Army as a civilian), but our son is E4 Navy machinist mate. He used to carry a delica, followed by a SOG jetedge when the delica was lost, and now the jetedge is MIA. He is now coveting a few other models, like the applegate folder (by gerber) and the similar benchmade model, I forget the model name.

Have you ever been an active duty US service person and asked about a Strider price?
Didn't think so...
And of course you’re not a government purchasing agent, so you don't know anything about that either....

I’m getting kinda tired of you calling me a liar though.

m
Strider claims their mission is the military man, but their prices belie that mission.
Well Mr. Strider, where's the info on the site that hints that active duty service person gets a different price tag on your knives?
Before you call me not doing my homework, I just went through most of the links that I've seen, and nothing on your site hints at the fact that active military men gets discounts.
I have nothing against you, or your knives (albeit the paracord didn't quite appeal to me that much), but before you call someone calling you a liar, you have to look at his point of view. He cannot find the information even if he looked. Even if you have that information on your site, you can only accuse him of uninformed, not a liar.
Nice customer service skills you got there!

It doesn't need to be in print. If they order a knife they get the discount. How would NOT advertising change that?

If you read my post that you quoted, you will notice that im not calling him a liar, im asking him to not call me one, which he had done in an earlier post.

Clearly, the guy is not a customer, so i guess my customer service is still okay huh? Have YOU ever experienced our customer service, or are you simply talking to hear your head rattle?

As an infantryman, weight was also an important issue for me. I had an MOD (ministry of defence) Survival knife but I never carried it operationally.
When your loaded with machine gun, ammunition, armour, ECM equipment, spare batteries, rations and all the other gear, you just don't want to lug a heavy knife that you're seldom going to use.
My knife of choice was the Victorinox Rucksak. If it had been available at the time I would have got the Victorinox Trailmaster (There's not much call for a corkscrew as a British private soldier!!)

Mr. Strider, I have to disagree with you. If military personnel get a discount, then you should say so on your website or in your printed ads.
I have two brothers who just retired from the USMC and I spent six years in the US Army, and all three of us are big time knife lovers, and we did'nt know you offered any discount.
Had we known, you might have sold three more knives sooner.

What kind of discount is offered?

Thanks,
Allen.

When I was a Coastie, I rarely carried anything more than a stockman at shore commands. When I was underway (on the white needle of death picture below) we ordered Gerber Multi-Pliers for our division. They sucked. I also carried a Buck Lite or a SOGwinder. Good cheap knives that I wouldn't cry over if I lost 'em.
The other day on the ferry to Manhattan there were a group of uniformed coast guard folks aboard, and they all had CRKT M16 LE's clipped to their life jacket vests.

AG Russell offers 25% discount on their website to service personnell. My most recent Cold Steel catalog offers I believe a 25 % discount and then there is a flyer with I believe a short term discout that is even higher but I can't remember the amount.

To answer your question, my son just signed up to be a SEAL and he will be carrying the new Strider SMF that I should be receiving in a couple of weeks.

It appears he is just giving a background for his question and perhaps preempting lame responses by strider groupies

Does that make me a groupie? I take great offense in that statement, making me sound like I'm in a cult because I like carrying the best and want the same for my son.

Oh, Mick, the lamb should be fattened up for the sacrifice by the next full moon oh high one... :p

1. Allenc has answered that rather nicely, I don't feel I need to add to that.
2. Read what I said again. "but before you call someone calling you a liar" that doesn't mean that you say that he's a liar, that mean that you said that he was calling you a liar.
3. This is the kind of hot headed response that my commment was directed to you. The person doesn't necessarily has to be your customer to treat him well, as long as he's a potential one. I have a feeling I might not be one if you keep up your quick response that you haven't actually understood what other people are saying.

I'am active duty military and I paid full price from TAD GEAR. Am I complaining, hell no. It is a fair priced knife, just like most any knife for sale. To my simple mind, it's all supply and demand, if the free market dictates a price, then so be it.
Would I have used the discount, yes, but as I stated, not that big of a deal vs. the amount of use I get.
I spent $ 600.00 on a CRK inlay that I barely use, so for me the Strider is just fine, since I carry almost every day.
It does rotate with a CRK sebbie (plain/classic), no complaints.

ABN.Ranger, INF. 06. Ret. Standby Reserve, Special Purpose.
I took a Randall 1-7 to RVN. I redirected two TL- 29`S,{the scales are delaminating now), a camp knife marked USA and two MC-1`s.
I left the Randall in a gook and had to buy a replacement, a wasp wast Gerber. The bayonet was the only free knife.

just would like to ask here
how would you know if someone was active military and ordered a knife? by the shipping address? or do ppl order using their rank and name?

An APO or AFO address would confirm that. However, we also use our home addresses, just like you.

A.G. Russell asks to see a copy of your ID card. I got a TI pen knife from them at Blade and just showed it in person.

A.G. never asked to see mine. But I have known him for a long time and we know the same people.
I think that I will send it, now that you bring it up.
