What do you guys do? What traditional knives do you use when doing it?

Very nice thread!
I make knives, included slipjoints, but not for a living, just plain simple passion! I often think about how in our modern living, carring a knife around is loosing its original usefulness and it is sad, so i appreciate knowing how a lot of people still find it necessary for day by day tasks, depending on their different daily environments.
We spend most of our time at work, and if we don't need a knife there, likely we won't need it while driving home or to the mall.
But having a little sharp blade in my pocket makes my day in the rare occurence of an unexpected task or during a day spent outside the routine.

Well, i'm a Job adviser.

The most daily cutting tasks are opening boxes or letters. My EDC is my beloved Böker Stockman with stag handles. Good to me - i got my own office, so i can carry fixed or folders... 😀

I am a corporate/real estate attorney. For those of you not in the know, that means I am not a trial attorney. I work in in the buying, selling, leasing, and other transactions relating to dirt. I am a "dirt attorney". Primarily, I sit at a desk writing various documents, reading title documents, and reviewing surveys. It is all pretty tame until its time to close a transaction. Then the fun begins.

I'm a criminal defense attorney..
I work as a public defender handling felony cases.

Office, court and jail.

I leave my knives at my desk in the morning.

For 5 years or so, I was my own boss, working from a home office as a Criminal Defense Attorney, which was nice. Go to court usually two days a week, spend the rest reading files, and writing motions.

Now, as a public defender, I have to drive to an office every day.

I'm a retired Linesman. When I was working I carried a traditional knife and a fixed blade in my tool pouch. Most of the time it was a Buck 110 and a Ka-Bar Marine knife. The Buck was very handy because of the sheath when gaffed into a utility pole 30 ft in the air. I skinned a lot of coated cable, cut flex PVC, card board plastic straps and tie wraps. These days I have several knives that I grab whatever I fancy from for normal around the house task.

I am a desk jockey and spend my days working in Excel spreadsheets and Access databases, terribly uninteresting but necessary stuff. I work from home a lot, so I am lucky in that regard and generally carry a small fixed blade and Scout pattern or SAK. On days when I need to be in the office I carry a Scout or SAK only, even though it is against my employers no "weapons" policy.

Another Engineer here. Chemical Engineer working for a company that manufactures filter cartridges for the oil & gas industry. I have an office, and do mostly computer/phone work, but we don't have a knife policy. I am favoring modern folders, but for the past few weeks have taken a liking to a traditional sidekick for my modern main blade.

Old Timer 80T
vintage Craftsman Camp style
and just received Case barlow and AGR med gunstock.

I have a couple of GEC's but they don't get much carry because I am working my way up to them. Same way it took me 3 years to work my way up to a Sebenza. But when I am ready, they will be there lol.

I am an anaesthesiologist.
My work itself doesn't really imply any use for a knife but...
I do carry a SAK (a Climber) mainly for the scissors (and sometimes the bottle opener) and an Opinel for meals and snacks (not inside the surgery room though )

For about 12 years of my life, I was a Radar Technician in the USAF. I carried a Buck 301 for most of that time, along with various SAKs. Then I went over to the "Dark Side" and spent the last half of my career in Special Operations, flying and other "interesting" duties. I still carried various SAKs, but also had a personally-modified Buck 112...still have it, but don't carry it often. After retirement from USSOCOM, I spent another 17 years as a contractor, working in various "interesting" locales. Along with stout fixed-blade knives (such as a Randall Model 14), I carried a 1988 Remington #4466 Muskrat pocket knife. Left that line of work in December, 2011, when the flag came down in Iraq.

I'm now a Teaching Pastor at my church. I sleep in my own bed at night, and no one shoots at me anymore! And I see my lovely wife every day...and I don't miss birthdays and holidays with my family! I carry only Traditionals now...my current favorite is an antique yellow jigged bone Northfield / GEC #77 Washington Jack...what a marvelous little knife!

Regards,
Ron

I'm a machinist who has just changed companies. I generally haven't carried any one knife at work too terribly long.

My previous employer was located in Kentucky. I carried whatever I wanted, many people carried. Plenty of Bucks on belts and Case collectors in Kentucky, as well as the usual moderns.

I had to wear gloves the last year or two there to protect my hands from a new coolant. I often carried a Svord mini which I have modified with metal slabs. I love the Svords and they are great for gloved hands

I changed jobs about 6 months ago, due to the coolant and other badness. My new job had a "no weapons" policy which seemed to be pretty strict on knives. I asked my co-workers about it and a few pulled out their moderns and told me not to sweat it.

I carried a modern or two for a bit. Then I realized that the coolant they used was pretty bio-friendly and I wouldn't need gloves. So now I can rotate knives like a lady would rotate shoes again. Yippee!

For a couple months I've been dropping a small Rough Rider canoe into my back pocket just for conciousness raising. Many a modern knife carrying co-worker has asked to see (and "coon finger"☺) my leetle friend.

I'm a retired police officer. While still on the job I carried a Puma Game Warden in a sheath on my duty belt, while working as a detective I tended towards a smaller medium stockman like a Buck 303 or a Case 63087. Now in retirement when I can carry whstever I want I usually carry a SAK and a medium stockman like the above and a Case 6318 & a 6375.

Nice Dave, love the way the SVORD came out, how goes the new job?

Quattromori, I enjoy seeing your opined on the O.R. I'm a scrub nurse. I deal with blades everyday, however they're of sterile scalpel varieties: 10, 15, & 11 blades. I'm involved with general and orthopedic surgery. This past year I've been on our robotics team as well. I can't get away with a knife at work, but you better believe I've got a 15,77, or 54 in the truck for the rest of my EDC ventures. I love watching patina evolve with snack prep for my kids i.e. Deer sticks and apples, and oranges. Great thread!

Im a wooden boat builder. I've had a knife in my pocket since i was 12, but just recently got into appreciating traditionals. Been carrying a Menefee trapper for work lately that kicked out most of my modern blades, the Bull Buster is another favorite. I obviously have a lot of specialized tools for every woodworking chore, but i still need to cut up a lot of rags, plastic sheeting, padding, open and break down boxes, and whittle tapered plugs for screw holes sometimes. Most of my coworkers carry various multitools or cheapo knives, but i find it much more satisfying to use a proper, well made knife.

The nail is far from the head WuGod :D xD that's a Jared Oeser Full custom XL gunstock that Bigfattyt ordered from Jared direct I believe/passed it on recently. Beautiful knife.

I am an auto mechanic. My job has many cutting tasks each day. Usually the tasks are opening packages that parts come in. The knife that is in my pocket when I leave home gets switched out when I get to work. I put the rotation knife in the top drawer of my tool box and pocket the Old Timer 80T. I do on occasion use the rotation knife for something but the work gets done with the Old Timer.

Chris

Yours was the first TC I ever laid eyes on. That's a great knife, my friend.

For a while many years ago, I was a US Army Intelligence soldier. And during that time and for many years after I carried Vic Huntsman and Leatherman. Between the two I was pretty much covered for tools. I changed my carry last year, paring down to a Vic Pioneer or Cadet and usually a GEC #15 in what ever flavor I was in the mood for.

Today, I work in IT for a non-profit hospice as a Network Support Technician, and my usual office carry is my Vic Cadet. The blade is used on boxes containing our equipment, stripping cable for network runs, letters from our vendors, and the occasional apple Donna packs in my lunch. The nail tool comes in handy with the tiny screws and panels I have to deal with when repairing or upgrading laptops. The two actual screwdrivers find work with servers and panels in our data center. And of course the cap lifter goes to work after 5pm.

I grew up on a dairy farm, got a Colonial Forest-Master scout knife when I was 8 or 9, and used it multiple times daily for work and/or recreation until I left for college in 1969. For the next almost 45 years, I almost never carried a pocket knife. Almost exactly 2 years ago, I became interested in knives again, stumbled onto BladeForums, and have accumulated a shocking number of knives. I've spent my entire career, 40+ years, teaching college mathematics and really have almost zero need for a knife on the job. But since I started this new knife hobby 2 years ago, I've started carrying multiple knives each day and set up a rotation to allow me to at least carry each of my knives for a week at a time every couple of months. I always have three pocket knives (that change every week) in the kitchen for food prep, and I'd like to do more whittling, but that may have to wait until I retire! It's interesting to me that many of you have mentioned regulations at work about the type of knives you're allowed to carry. I don't know if my college has a policy about this; I'm just taking a "don't ask, don't tell" approach and carrying whatever I want each day. If it's against policy, I'll probably get at least one warning, right??

Thanks for the interesting stories!
