what do you guys do

I'm 22 and I've most been working in residential construction since I was 15. I attended UFRA-Utah Fire and Rescue academy and a couple other colleges. I'm currently doing basement finishes and various other home upgrades in the Denver area. I found a good deal on a couple small parcels of land about 3 hrs west of Denver pretty deep in the mountains and am taking the summer off to build an off the grid cabin. COME VISIT! I also started dabbling in bladesmithing and blacksmithing.

currently a student.

worked as a computer technician for a few years.

work in a warehouse part-time while working on my degree.

currently working towards a double major in history and english. hoping to work for CSIS or the RCMP after graduation. might go into education though, depending on what my graduating GPA is. would like to go to bcit after and train to become a forensics technician at the forensics building in vancouver.

trouble is i go to a school covered in hiking trails so sometimes its hard to sit in class when i have my gear in my trunk and would rather go for a walk then listen to my proff. surrounded by trees on a mountain top with lakes, and an ocean within walking distance makes it a tad bit distracting :)

here is a view from the roof by the westmall complex:

this is what i see when i'm sitting in tutorial staring out the window in the AQ:

cheers.

professional dumba$$ highschool student who cant get his act together (i just got suspended for 10 days for doing something incredibly stupid and i failed a year of middle school for skipping too much and may fail my freshman year for what i did. :( )

I'd have failed out of college long ago in an area like that. May not have made it through high school.

Hey ajcz,

I'm sure you've heard this over and over again from other old geezers like myself, so I'm probably wasting my time but what the hell. Either get your s**t together or spend most of your adult life wishing you did, and I'm speaking from experience. Like you, I was a dumb ass and now, like you will , I pay the price.

What is the price you ask? It's the frustration of knowing you could do much more with your life, but are limited because of a lack of qualifications. Sure, I have a job, make money, can buy a few knives, here and there, but there could be a lot more than that. Read back through this thread and see some of the kick ass jobs that people have. Jobs that include the things we like to do anyway. How can things get sweeter than that?

Remember what Confucius (or whoever) said, " Find a job you like and you'll never have to work a day in your life." And in order to find that job, you have to have the options, and that's what you have to create right now!

I use to tell my kids, "I don't care what you do, be a (fill in the blank with some crappy, uninviting job) if you want, but be it because you choose to, not because you have no other options."

So, ajcz, get off your ass and get the job done, or spend the rest of your life, wishing you did!

Great advice doc. I am so content w/ what I do, that it doesnt even feel like work to me. In public service we are severly underpaid, and that doesnt even bother me. Moneys not everything, In fact I would take a pay cut to do what I do.

that is my only real dream. nail on the head.

I would second DOC words.. Ajcz There is one thing that NO one can take from you and that is knowledge. Im sure you heard it on here many times. Do what ever you can and get back to school. Its not as hard to study... Its more that you need to set some time for it. And follow on it. If you think that school is hard wait till you have to go to a job that you dont like every day.. Im 41 year old now and i went back to college.. Next year it might be UCLA... Do well in school and the world would be yours to see.

Well,

Like Mike, I get to stay home with the kids. I have a 19 month old daughter and a son who will be 5 in late June.

In the past I've worked as a tube slug, opcon mole, network engineer, systems engineer, systems analyst, systems administrator, and finally (much later than I should have) gave up on the computer industry and started doing landscaping and construction.

Funny thing- I make a LOT more per hour doing flagstone or a deck than I ever did with computers. Of course, it's hard to work 60 hour weeks on construction, but I have kids. 60 hours a week working outside the home seems stupid. Still, I did it for a while after Leif was born while my wife was a stay home mom.

Somewhere along the way we discovered that I like rebuilding and restoring bicycles, making knives, and Doing Stuff much more than any job. We also discovered that my wife has a real career dream.

So now I'm the stay home dad making my knives while Jessica is going through school for nursing (and then midwifery). I'll probably never be the primary wage earner again after school is over.

But- My son, at 4 years old, can make straight cuts in 1x4s with a hand saw and build himself a plank door for his playhouse (All I did was help measure and hang hinges)- he has helped sand knives, drills holes and shoots screws on every available surface I'll let him. - he does Stuff. And a lot more Stuff than I was allowed, encouraged, or knew to do when I was young. And Astrid is a terror, 19 months old and gets mad that I won't let her use the leather cutting knives.....

So that's it. I make knives and bikes, take my kids out a lot, and BBQ.

Koyote, that is awesome. my 4 year old does stuff too. Its very admirable to be a atay at home dad. I work 2 24s a week and am home with my boys 5 days a week, I wouldnt trade the time I spend with them for the world.

My wife is a full time nursing student too, stressfull for them, but it will pay off. Very cool.

Sophomore in high school.
Act like an idiot but have my act together.
I usually get odd jobs like demoing houses during the school year and work as a caddie at one of Dublin Ohios many golf clubs during the summer.

Recently graduated Civil Engineer. looking for a job where I won't have to be in a cube' farm.

If you really love the outdoors, do what I did. I now spend upwards of 145 days a year camping, hiking and everything outdoors. I run a survival school.
Oldman/Marty Simon

Marty, I think I'm not the only one who's jealous of your "job";)

I'm in landscape construction, so I build gardens, heavy work, very satisfying at the end though the pay is pretty shitfull. :thumbdn:

We work on residential jobs 20K to 100k, my biz partner and I get along well so it's pretty easy. Would really like a change to something a little easier on the body:yawn:
I started in landscaping 'cause I just wanted to get outside in the sun, and rain occasionally.
